I don’t often leave negative reviews, but unfortunately this stay really missed the mark and the unprofessionalism meant I felt I had to. There are a few positives worth mentioning. The location is decent, with good places to eat nearby, a park within walking distance, and convenient bus stops close by. The room itself was also a good size. Breakfast is offered, which is a plus, though it’s very basic and served in a room that feels quite dated. However, the negatives significantly outweighed these points. The room had a balcony, but no chair, which made it fairly pointless. The shower was a good size, but had cracked tiles and poorly positioned body sprays that ended up hitting you in the face rather than your body. The biggest issue, however, was the service. On arrival in the evening, I was immediately asked to pay. When I asked to see the room first, the response was quite unwelcoming and dismissive. After some insistence, I was briefly allowed to look, but the interaction made it uncomfortable to raise any concerns later. When I checked out after three nights, I mentioned the cleanliness issues. I was told I should have raised it earlier, but given the initial experience and the fact I had already cleaned the room myself by the next day, it didn’t feel like a realistic option. I explained all this. I was then told there was nothing they could do. After my conversation, I thought about her saying there was nothing they could do, so I followed up with an email suggesting a partial refund, given the condition of the room compared to expectations. I had paid for a 3 star hotel, but it was significantly worse than the 1 star I had come from. The response was quick but dismissive, stating that all my comments and actions couldn’t be taken seriously as they were clearly financially motivated, which I found quite offensive. A follow up reply from me stating how inappropriate this was received no response. I would avoid this hotel. I am sure the hotel will leave a dismissive comment to me, but if you have any doubts about the authenticity of this review, please check other reviews and you will see cleanliness appears low on many and also check my other reviews to see that I am not someone who complains easily or leaves bad reviews. However, in this case, the level of cleanliness and professionalism was poor enough that I felt it was important to warn others.

We had a wonderful stay at San Max Hotel. The location is excellent, very convenient for exploring Catania and close to everything you might need. The staff were extremely kind and welcoming – truly professional and helpful at all times. Everything was spotlessly clean – the rooms, the common areas, absolutely everything. The hotel is also very quiet and peaceful, which made our stay even more comfortable. Breakfast is basic, but absolutely sufficient and fresh. A very nice touch is the complimentary coffee, tea and pastries available at reception during the day. Overall, this hotel offers excellent value for money. We would definitely stay here again.

Stay Details. I visited Catania during the last days of September with my husband, and spent two nights in the hotel. I understand that during this time, it is not a high season, but I must say that I saw several turists in the city and the weather was quite good (sunny, but not so hot).

Location. The hotel is located in Via Etnea, a wide street, full of shops and tourists. It is not exactly in the center, but just after walking a couple of blocks in this main street, there is already the Bellini Garden and tons of restaurants. After few blocks more, there are many other shops and even squares and touristic sites. The street is well illuminated, specially appreciated in the evening, and since there is always people walking there, I would say that you feel secure walking there.

Room. I was positively surprised with the size of the bedroom. It was quite big, the bed was also big, and in comparison to other hotels I have been, the toilette was quite wide. There was a good ventilation and for me everything was quite comfortable. Perhaps the only observation would be about the isolation of noise from the hall or from other rooms (that is also part of some other previous reviews). However, in the evening, besides some noise in the hall when someone was talking or probably arriving in their bedroom, everything was quiet. I slept well. And in comparison to other hotels, with even more stars, where I have been in Italy, it is quite difficult to find room with a proper noise isolation. It is good to remember that Italy has several old buildings, so the expectation must be realistic in line with that. My room was facing the inner yard, so I didn't listen any street noise. It is also expected some mosquitoes, but in the room I found the device to keep them away.

Service. The staff was very kind and attentive. When we arrived, there was a perpendicular street closed, and Google was not recognizing properly how to arrive to the entry of the parking. So we were helped by phone with the direction.

Facilities. The hotel has a parking and a swimming pool. It is advisable to call in advance in case a parking place is required. They also offer water, coffee and tee for free in the reception. I don't know if this is the standard, but our price includes breakfast, and I must say that it was good. The dining room is in a neighbor building, and the breakfast included sweet and salty options, orange juice and coffee. For me it was enough to start the day.

In conclusion, I think that this was a good option during my days in Catania, and I would probably choose it again if I visit again the city.

Excellent location few minutes walk from central. If you come from airport the bus stop is near. Room are enormous. Breakfast is ok.
Loved to stay here

The reception staff were really helpful. In fact they were brilliant. Free tea, coffee and water was always available from near reception. The room was a little dated, the air con wasn't working properly, but it did slightly cool the room. Some of the electrical sockets are burnt and need to be renewed. Breakfast was ok but nothing special. Prepacked cheese in Italy when Italy has some of the best cheeses in the world. All in all it was a comfortable stay.

After 9 nights in a villa in Palermo, we booked one night here before our morning flight home. The rooms were a little larger than you might expect with all the standard provisions. Thge reception staff were very nice and welcoming. The location is good - turn righ out of the hotel and you soon hit the main drag in Catania with all the shops, bars, restaurants and little off-shots you need. Overall I was pleasantly suprised by the hotel and in terms of value for money, would give it 5 stars.

The San Max Hotel was a perfect place to stay for our last night in Sicily before flying home. Staff were great in getting us a taxi booked for early in the morning and letting us know about the hotel. The room was fine and even a lot bigger than we needed. The requested second bed was set-up and waiting. It is not high luxury but it was clean and in a very central location.

Stayed at The San Max recently with my friend, we arrived early our room wasn’t ready which is expected, so we asked could we leave our luggage somewhere, the young lady agreed and we put our belongings in a room at the back, I asked could I change my shirt whilst I was there I was told no and needed to do this in the toilet, fair enough but so difficult ! During our stay I asked if we could use the pool, as it was October 1st I was told no as the pool closes Sept 30th. The room was ok, staff were ok but too many rules and staff lacking any common sense. Pretty good location thou, coffee was good at Breakfast room but no air-con in breakfast room or at reception made it very uncomfortable

Love this little gem! Comfy beds, AC, quiet, simple but tasty breafast. Small pool with sunbeds and shower. Nice neighborhood. The ladies in the reception are sweet and most helpful with tips about places to go. It is not luxury this place, its better because it has good vibes and a heart.
