Hotel Slovenija – Lifeclass Hotels & Spa, Portorož in Portoroz Airport

Disappointing stay, not a five-star experience

After five or six years, we decided to return to Portorož and stay at one of the LifeClass hotels again. This time, we stayed at Hotel Slovenija.

The location is excellent, right next to the main street and the beach. Sadly, for us, this was the main positive part of the stay.

The entire floor, including our room, had a stale and unpleasant smell for several days. The room and the hotel felt worn out. Everything was functional, but the hotel seems long overdue for a full renovation. The overall impression was closer to a three-star hotel than a five-star one. The elevator also felt quite old, and on some floors you could hear it creaking, which was unpleasant.

The food was also below expectations. Breakfast had a decent selection, but it was standard hotel food and nothing memorable. We tried dinner on the first evening, but the selection was weak and the dishes did not look appealing, so we cancelled dinner for the remaining days.

Parking was another concern. The garage costs 20 euros per day and is close to the entrance, but guests are not allowed to park their own cars. The hotel staff parks the car instead. After returning home and washing the car, I noticed several scratches on both sides. I cannot claim they happened at the hotel, but valet-only parking creates an extra concern for guests.

The staff was not especially friendly or helpful. Several basic requests were harder than they should have been. The staff often seemed uninterested and gave the impression they were doing only the minimum required.

We did not use the pool because we had read many negative reviews about it.

Overall, Hotel Slovenija has a strong location, but the experience did not match the standard expected from a five-star hotel.

The hotel does not offer a 5 star accommodation for sure! I would give them 3 star for the rooms/amenities, 4 star for the food and 1 star for their service.

Please avoid this place if you want to really enjoy your vacation; otherwise you will constantly need to argue with their staff starting from the front desk at check-in even if it is 11.00 pm and you've spent 15 hours in the plane/car trying to reach this location. They did not care about the reservation we had and the type of room we were supposed to be accommodated in. It took me 2 hours to finally receive the keys from a tiny& narrow room that had nothing in common with the one we have booked before our travel. They took the keys from our rented car saying that they offered a vallet parking (for which you need to pay!) and they did park the car in a place, which was very hard to call a parking lot...and it turned out that someone hit our car and told the front desk staff but they did not inform us immediately. They waited for me to bring my credit card, charged it and then suddenly remembered to inform me about the accident, it took them nearly 48 hours :)))!

Extremely rude and unpolite people, very far from being professional or even reasonable in their statements or arguments. We felt like we've come back to socialist Yugoslavia - the system does not recognize people or customers, they simply do not care. Their only priority is to charge you credit card and forget about you immediately. And yes, they will be constantly lying whether because it is in their character or because they've been instructed to do so...:). We've never interacted with such fake people in any of the 30 countries we have visited for the last 20+ years.

There were bugs in the 2 rooms we lived in; their staff working at the spa center was very unprofessional as they could not even confirm the time for my appointment so I was supposed to wait 1.5 hours just because someone made a huge mistake in their reservation system. Well, I did not want to wait.

Since I do not wish to be offensive towards the country and its population I must admit that we had much better experience in the mountains of Slovenia when we finally left Portoroz and this awkward hotel. If you care about your time, money, vacation and nerves just avoid this dump.

The hotel and the place are more or less ok, but the girls who work at the reception (blond skinnier and black plumper) are very rude and don't try to explain anything nicely to the client, we are very disappointed with the way they treated us, and we only asked one question. It's true that not everyone is born for that job, if I were the boss I would seriously think about who I employ in that workplace. It's unfortunate that they come to work with such an attitude as if they were given to them by God.
