Suites & Villas by Dunas in Maspalomas

I am completely confused how this hotel has received such good reviews. On arrival in reception the hotel looks promising but beyond the reception doors tells a different story. The hotel is tired looking and worn. We booked a family suite which is situated around the dedicated children’s pool and splash area. Our room has curtains that didn’t fit the window, one single half length wardrobe that can only fit a weeks worth of clothes for 2 people and definitely not for a family. Our shower screen leaked with a green mouldy shower head and black mould growing on the bathroom ceiling. The dedicated children’s pool is so deep an adults cannot stand in it and the baby pool is probably the size of a large bath tub, this pool was always quiet probably due to the depth and how cold it was, lifeguards always at on there phone not looking at the pool. The main pool area was full by 8.45am with no sun loungers left and they were all packed so closely together. The gym is literally a glass box with barely any equipment and opens at 9am which is too late for most people. There is 1 buffet restaurant, breakfast is absolute mayhem, the restaurant manger is extremely rude, he waves you away and grunts at you. Dinner is 2 services, they try to make all the families use the earlier service and food is not replenished towards the end so if you don’t arrive early good luck in getting desert. The food and choice is well below average for a 4 star hotel. They seem to be very short staffed and food always all over the floor. It’s like a school canteen. The “snack pool bar” has around 5 tables, the staff are like rude headless chickens, food takes ages to arrive and the quality isn’t good. The mini disco was moved from the main stage which the kids and adults loved to the pool area where it fell very flat and unenjoyable. The evening entertainment was good. Drinks from the bar area in the evening were just basic, cocktails only from what’s on the list and tasted terrible, the evening bar area can only be described as an absolute dump. In summary would I go back, no. Staff are rude, poor food, hotel is a bad set up in general. Very much feels like a very (and I say very strongly) basic hotel.
