I visited this restaurant yesterday with my family and a friend, and while the service staff was exemplary, the dining experience itself was highly disappointing.

The Service
I must begin by commending the restaurant manager and the bar staff. They were incredibly polite, professional, and helpful throughout our stay. Their hospitality is a credit to the establishment.

The Kitchen & Food Quality
Unfortunately, the kitchen did not meet the same standards. We encountered several significant issues:

Inflexible Service: After our friend requested string hoppers, the chef initially refused. Even after multiple requests, the alternative provided (three small pieces of roti) was inadequate.

Inaccurate Dishes: The roti was served with a chicken curry, but when we requested lunumiris, we were served a red gravy that was clearly not the authentic condiment requested.

Substandard Main Courses: We ordered three Chicken Cordon Bleu dishes. They were unseasoned and, most surprisingly, contained no cheese.

Misleading Menu Descriptions: The menu promised a vegetable salad and chips. Instead, we received a very small portion of French fries, a few slices of cucumber, and a single piece of carrot.

Professional Conclusion
As a travel agent, I pay close attention to the "value for money" and the consistency of the guest experience. While your front-of-house team is doing an excellent job, the kitchen is currently a liability. Food quality is the heart of a restaurant’s success, and without immediate attention to the chef’s response and culinary output, you risk losing both reputation and repeat business.

Based on this experience, I would find it very difficult to recommend or book this venue for my future clients.

The building is old, colonial, and the lobby is huge. But the rooms are average. A strange smell kept coming, the corridors are shady.
But the location is great. Just 20mins walk to the galle face.

One of the best hotels i ever been to. It was in a quiet area and close to many attractions in the city. Loved their breakfast, dinner buffet and their roof top pool side view of Indian ocean. There are also many restaurants near by. Staff was polite and helpful.

Although the hotel boasts a history of over 150 years and has hosted the Queen of England, it's really run-down. My room had cockroaches, geckos, and mosquitoes – a complete mini-ecosystem! The only positives were the cheap price and the decent breakfast. The dining area is right by the sea, offering beautiful harbor views.

Steeped in over a century of heritage, the Grand Oriental Hotel is more than just a place to stay — it’s a historical landmark overlooking Colombo Harbour that takes you back to the days of colonial Ceylon.

Originally the site of a simple façade once occupied by the Dutch Governor, the property was converted into British Army barracks in 1837 before being transformed into the elegant **Grand Oriental Hotel in 1875 under Governor Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton and architect James George Smither.

When it opened on 5 November 1875, it was advertised as “the only fully European owned and fully equipped hotel in the East” — a modern marvel of its time with 154 luxury rooms, electric lights, and fans (remarkable innovations for the era).

In its heyday, the GOH was the first port-of-call for travellers arriving by mail steamers, complete with landscaped tropical gardens, a resident orchestra, and panoramic harbour views — all key elements of a grand colonial experience.

Throughout the 20th century, the hotel evolved with the times — introducing on-suite bathrooms in the 1920s, welcoming local guests by the 1940s, and surviving ownership changes that saw it renamed Taprobane Hotel in the 1960s before regaining its original historic name in 1989.

Today, its mix of original features and later restorations makes it a must-see for travellers who love history, architecture, and stories of a bygone era, especially set right at Colombo’s bustling historic harbour.

A charming heritage hotel with classic colonial-style architecture and a great view of the Colombo Harbour. 🏨⚓✨

Rooms are spacious, and the atmosphere feels nostalgic. 🛌

Friendly staff and a peaceful setting make it a nice spot for a quiet stay or a relaxing meal. 😊🍽️

A good choice for those who enjoy historic hotels with character. 🏛️💛

The hotel was so good. The check-in process took a little bit of time than we expected. Everything else was perfectly fine. Very authentic Hotel with a rich history. Would stay here again 👍

This hotel, from its name to its decor, is very colonial. I booked it directly on Ctrip, and the price was great, but the cleanliness was worrying – the bathroom was full of cockroach nymphs 🪳. The TV was so ancient that I hadn't heard that loud, explosive shutdown sound in ages, it cracked me up 😂. The South Asian guy at the front desk was handsome and attentive; he even asked to take a photo with me. The original site was a Dutch governor's residence, later converted into a British barracks in 1837. On November 5, 1875, it was redeveloped into the Grand Oriental Hotel. No wonder there are old government offices nearby, and the hotel is adorned with banners celebrating its 150th anniversary.

I loved how old this hotel is. It has his history and it didn’t change since then. Our room looked good, not “tired”.
Warm water issues, but again, you gonna have this issue everywhere.
