Villa Blu in Tangalle

We stayed for four nights at Villa Blu as part of a 12-day trip around Sri Lanka, and unfortunately this was the only hotel where the experience felt less guest-focused than elsewhere. We were surprised to feel subtly discouraged from exploring local restaurants, despite travelling with children and a driver. While the hotel welcomes families, the beach and sea directly in front were not suitable during our stay due to strong currents, as well as rubbish and broken glass. Food at the hotel was mixed—the menu felt quite westernised and some options were unavailable. Breakfast service was slow, inflexible (no earlier seating than 08:00), and requests for the children were overlooked. In contrast, local restaurants nearby were excellent: welcoming, with fantastic local cuisine and fresh seafood. There were also some practical frustrations, including having to hand over our only room key for servicing, an overly forceful “monsoon” shower, and the pool closing earlier than advertised (chemicals added before 18:30, preventing evening use). Most concerningly, after eating a tuna salad at the hotel on our final day, I developed symptoms consistent with scombroid poisoning (flushing, headache, dizziness, rapid heart rate). While the tuna was the likely cause, I appreciate this may relate to handling earlier in the supply chain rather than the hotel itself. On a positive note, the hotel was consistently very clean and well maintained. Overall, while the property has potential, the lack of flexibility and guest-focused service made this a less enjoyable stay compared to the high standards we experienced elsewhere in Sri Lanka.
