Schatzalp Snow & Mountain Resort in Davos

🌍
Switzerland, Davos, Bobbahnstrasse 23
● Center: 1.8 km

Historic and elegant architecture with Jugendstil details and a unique old-world ambiance praised by several guests. Excellent location above Davos with superb panoramic views of the valley and mountains. Spa and wellness facilities including large saunas, steam rooms, and a spa pool are highly appreciated. Friendly and helpful staff noted frequently, especially at reception and for ski-related services. Ski lift access included with stay, plus free sled rentals and a private lighted sledding track. Variety of room types available, including larger Villas and Cottages with balconies and mountain views. Several guests report that the hotel and its furnishings are dated, with peeling paint, crumbling balcony wood, and sagging beds. Rooms can be small and lack modern conveniences like telephones; bathrooms sometimes need updates. Difficulties reaching the hotel due to reliance on tram/funicular with infrequent schedules early and late in the day. Car parking is not on site but in town, requiring luggage to be carried to the tram station and then to the hotel. Restaurant prices are high and some guests found the breakfast mediocre with limited coffee machines. Some guests experienced unapproachable staff in dining areas and limited currency exchange facilities.

Description

Schatzalp Snow & Mountain Resort is a historic 3-star hotel in Davos, Switzerland, originally built in 1900 and renovated in 2003. It offers a unique old-world atmosphere combined with modern amenities such as a spa and wellness centre, sauna, and free WiFi. Guests can choose from a wide variety of room types, including Standard rooms with balconies and mountain views, Superior rooms, Villas, Cottages, and Chalets. The hotel features a restaurant, bar, and several leisure options like skiing, bowling, and a children’s playground. Despite its charm and elegance, some guests note that the building and furnishings show signs of aging, with areas like balconies needing repair and some rooms being small and less updated. The hotel provides free parking nearby, but guests must use a tram or funicular to reach the property, which runs every 15 to 30 minutes. Overall, the resort is praised for its scenic location, historic character, and friendly staff, making it an interesting choice for travelers who appreciate heritage and mountain views.

Location

Schatzalp Snow & Mountain Resort is located at Bobbahnstrasse 23 in Davos, Switzerland, situated above the town. The hotel is accessible only via a private funicular or tram ride from the valley, which runs every 15 minutes during peak times and every 30 minutes off-peak. Guests arriving by car can park near the Coop supermarket about 400-500 meters from the funicular station. The hotel offers panoramic views of the Alps and is close to hiking trails and ski slopes. It lies approximately 119 km from Zurich Airport (ZRH). The location provides a quiet mountain environment away from the town center, with fresh air and scenic vistas, but requires planning for transport due to the tram connection.

Tips

  • Plan your arrival and departure times carefully because the tram/funicular runs every 15 to 30 minutes and missing one can cause significant delays.
  • If you arrive by car, park near the Coop supermarket and use the funicular to avoid long walks with luggage.
  • Bring your own ice or plan ahead if you need ice for medication, as some guests reported difficulty obtaining it from hotel staff.

I stayed for two nights. This hotel is centrally located and old world, which is a plus and a minus. It is a tram ride above the city. The grounds and building are outstanding. But they have kept it very old world. For example, my room was quite small and had no telephone. The room had no tub. I had asked for a glass of ice to chill critical medication - at the desk because of no phone - and I got the strangest glare, asking me what I needed it for. I told them, and they said they didn’t do that. They said they would “request” it, but it never came. When I checked again they offered to put it in their fridge, but I was not going to be separated from critical meds while in Europe where my medication is not offered. So my expensive medication will need to be thrown out when I get back. Two things I advise on. First, you must take a tram to the hotel. It runs every 15 minutes during the peak of day, but as infrequently as every 30 minutes early and late. There is nothing but frustration trying to get there by 9, but then getting your dinner check in town slowly, then arriving at 9:02 and needing to wait 30 minutes for the next tram. Second, the hotel is very hard to find because there is only the tram stop at the road. Although there is a big sign drivers can’t find it because there is no building with the name on it. If in doubt, go to the hotel Europa. That is where the driver will insist that that is your hotel. The tram is right next door on the right side. Probably easier to tell the driver to drop you at Europa, then walk the 50 feet till the tram. This hotel is best if you are there with few hard commitments, and just want to bask in the ambience and mountains. I was there for an event in town, and it is frustrating racing through breakfast to get the last tram that will let you arrive to and from the bottom in time with the tram.

Dropped in during 3500 mile charity drive. Very security orientated. Spa pool great and biggest saunas and steam rooms I've ever seen. Restaurant prices very high, so ate in village. Staff not very approachable. No facilities to change any cash.

This hotel is aged. Pain peeling, furniture faded and knocked and carpets from a bygone era. Car parking is in the town on a public street which entails carrying luggage a long way to the hotel rail shuttle and then again onto the hotel reception.

The rooms are terrible. Very dated. The bed base on the floor with a thin mattress atop a 15cm high base. You don't so much step out of bed when you get above a certain age, as roll out. The bed sagged to so didn't provide comfort.

The breakfast was included but pretty average. Davos was a stop on a 10 day driving holiday around the Alps and Lakes, this hotel was the second most expensive but ranked by us 10th.

Travelling with my daughter we had two rooms booked at the hotel. Arriving by car then be aware there is no car access to the hotel. You have to locate the tram station to get allocated a parking space 100m away. So, you have to haul your luggage a long way to the tram and then a long way to the hotel reception before you get to check in. It took us three calls to reception to get us and our car to the starting point. The hotel itself is very dated. The panelling, carpets, beds and furniture is from another era. It looks like it should have been updated 40 years ago. Generally the entire hotel has an air of decay where a lick of fresh paint would help. We didn't use any hotel services other than the charged car parking space. Not a hotel or place I'd ever be desperate to revisit. The view is the only redeeming feature.

After watching the excellent and engaging series DAVOS 1917 I decided to stay in this iconic hotel where the series was filmed. The hotel is located in Schatzalp so you need to go up with the funicular (obviously included for hotel guests that go up and down free of charge). You can reach the departure station by car, leave your luggage and then park at the Coop supermarket about 400-500 meters away. The structure is magnificent and historic with many tourists attracted by its enviable position overlooking the valley. I do not practice winter sports but its location is very interesting for walks both in winter and summer (I took a beautiful walk in the snow towards Davos Platz). The hotel is truly historic there is also a beautiful elevator from the time of the opening of the hotel. I had a beautiful "Kaiser ZImmer" on the corner very comfortable and spacious, on the size of the room nothing to complain about but instead on the furnishings: Oh my god! I understand that they want to keep historical things but here there is nothing historical, old and that's it. The bathroom is in Jugendstil, excellent choice I would say but the sanitary ware needs to be replaced as soon as possible. The room had a beautiful terrace but again oh my god the wooden railing seemed to break at any moment! I think the hotel needs a general renovation without changing its external appearance or style. I agree that we are not at the "Palace" but there are some things that really need to be modernized as soon as possible. Also because in all honesty, it is true that January is high season in the mountains, the prices are not exactly those of a youth hostel. The breakfast I would say mediocre, some things good like the yogurts and local cheeses but the pre-cooked bakery products are a catastrophe. and then only one coffee machine for all the guests? Staff at the restaurant, had 2 good dinners, needs also better training. On the other hands staff at the reception very friendly and helpful.A mixed experience: very pleasant for the historical aspect of the visit and the structure (although in desperate need of renovation) but on other aspects such as furnishings and breakfast there is a lot of room for improvement.

We visited the hotel 45 years ago with our parents and returned this summer. We did not expect the hotel to be the same but we were shocked at the amount of decline. The location is beautiful and views amazing but the hotel needs major work. The entire place needs painting, balconies repaired due to crumbling wood and general repair. The hotel had very few guests which in itself was a plus for us but an obvious negative for the hotel. The staff other than the dining room manager were helpful and accommodating. It was sad to see the current state of the hotel vs her glory days.

Schatzalp is a magical and unique place that you will never forget! It's like entering another world where history comes to life. The staff are marvelous and go out of their way to be accommodating. Schatzalp is not just a business to them, and that makes the atmosphere particularly pleasant and welcoming. The location is amazing, the history glamorous, and the experience not one you will soon forget.

Stayed for 5 days for a holiday in the snow. The hotel is beautifully located above Davos, only to be reached by a private cable car. When you arrive you feel you enter a film scene, where you can write the script. The whole atmosphere is one you will never forget, it is if you go back in time when only the happy few went on holiday. The hotel is done in beautiful architecture and is very elegant. Wood, marble and stone. Jugendstil details. Food is great, the staff friendly and helpful. You can sled down every night, on a private lighted sled course, and there is a great slope & ski lift is included in the hotel stay on the back of the hotel. Some things are older but that makes the hotel even better. I rather see something done with craft and nice materials then plastic fantastic. I have seen reviews of people who made a picture of some faded paint or a stain in the carpet.... that the hotel was older then they expected and some other silly bla bla. It is like not admiring a pretty lady but only concentrating on a pimple. f you like character and elegance and a hotel that one of a kind you should stay here. If you want a kind of mediocre middle class so called luxury, there are plenty of other hotel chains that cater to that. I will be back Hotel Schatzalp, I had a fantastic time!

So why do I only give 3 stars? The hotel is old, fair enough, on would expect some old furniture and so on. Considering the prices they charge, however, semi-faded cheap-looking furniture in the room is not accecptable. Neither is the stat of the railing of the balcony, where you could actually injure yourself, since the wood is in need of repair. The staff were really friendly and helpful, no problem there. However, wrong information in the email when booking, the funicular is actually free when staying in the hotel, which we did not know and paid for it the first time we used it. Not a lot of money, but considering the prices, it is annoying. The setting, of course is fantastic, great views of the valley, nice sheltered balconies to sit and read and "take the air". Really evokes a Zaubergerg feeling.
