Reviews
The rooms are spacious and the beds are OK.
The breakfast isn’t the greatest but it does the job.
All in all a great place to stay.
The location is in the mangroves and access requires a short walk or motorbike rode on a dirt track. The staff are very lovely and helpful. Rooms are extremely big and private with a nice deck looking out into nature. Very close to Challee Beach, short 2km trip to the village and restaurants. Recommended!
However, our experience at The Sun Great Resort was disappointing enough that we feel the need to share it to help others make an informed decision.
There were a few positives. The rooms were clean and spacious (although very basic), the beds were comfortable, and the mattresses were good, ensuring a decent night’s sleep. The air conditioning worked well, and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately, these positives were overshadowed by significant issues. The resort is located near a mangrove, and the surroundings are muddy—not just in the outer areas but even near the pathways and the bungalows themselves. This, along with an unpleasant smell, made the outdoor environment uncomfortable. The hotel lacks charm and feels neglected, with trash scattered in some areas and poorly maintained grounds.
Breakfast was another letdown. It is served cold (even eggs and bacon) even early in the morning (even a 7am as it seems they prepare the previous day). The overall food quality was average, which didn’t help improve the experience.
The pool area was also disappointing. The wooden loungers were hard and lacked cushions, making it uncomfortable to relax by the pool and to stay there. Even basic beach restaurants in Charlie Beach offer basic cushions for their loungers, so this clearly shows the resort could easily improve.
Overall this is poor value for money: we would understand some of the above if we were staying in a 30 usd hotel, but we paid nearly $75 USD per night, expecting a proper experience. For what it offers, the resort is significantly overpriced, especially when compared to other options on Koh Mook and across Southeast Asia.
Overall the stay was really disappointing. We hope the management addresses these issues, but for now, we would not recommend this resort. There are far better options on the island offering much better value for money (we had time to go around as we did not feel like staying long time in the hotel and had an extensive discovery of the island, which is very nice and pleasant, don't miss it!)
Transfer can be organized by the resort (from Trang Airport to the resort -minivan, boat, taxi for 1600 baht for 4 people). Easiest contact is via facebook.
Resort is ideally located. Very quiet place. Of you get a beach view, you wake up with the sun and the view on the sea.
This beach is not good for swimming, nevertheless you can walk or use the free bicycle to go to charlie beach. (5 min) or Savalai. If you feel to lazy, staff can organized a local taxi for 50 baht (per way).
Rooms are prepared mornings and evenings and complimentary water filled up in the fridge every time.
Pool is nice and warm.
Staff sometimes ask if you wish to drink something (In my opinion, this should be done more often or with a menu near the pool).
Restaurant serves good food and drinks. Choice is not always available but there js enough choice to be satisfied.
Beakfast has choice between Thai version and continental.
We stayed 3 nightd and recommand this place if you need quiet time, and friendly and helpful staff. Bare in mind you can swim in the pool but not in the sea at this location, nevertheless, possibilities for other places are easy to reach.
Beach is at the door step but not suited for swimming.
We stayed here 1 night but could have spent more time, lovely island. Like the others have said, the location is slightly further but not a problem, they'll rent scooters and can help you get a tuktuk if needed.
We walked from the pier and it was about 25 min walk, if you're up for an exercise :) the rooms are very spacious, some improvements going around which is good to see. Swimming pool is amazing for swimming.
Highly recommended!
