This is the first time in decades of travel that we have ever left a hotel early and forfeited a prepaid stay.

We travel frequently and have stayed in hotels across a wide range of categories. We booked five nights at more than $450 per night and chose to leave after the first evening, sacrificing the remaining four nights and losing around €2,000 because the experience differed so significantly from what was represented.

We had noticed a few reviews mentioning that the hotel runs extremely hot and assumed it would be minor. It was not. The temperature throughout the hotel was uncomfortably high, and some areas felt closer to saunas than shared spaces. Even with radiators turned off and the balcony door open overnight in winter temperatures, our bedroom remained stifling. Keeping the door open meant frequent noise from the car park below and neighbouring hotel’s music.

Our higher-category “deluxe suite” room faced the rear of the hotel directly above that car park and another building. We could only see a partial mountain view by standing at the window and looking sideways. This was very different from the scenic alpine atmosphere with valley and slope views suggested in the hotel’s advertising.

The room felt dated rather than intentionally traditional. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and appeared more recently renovated, which we appreciated, but the in-room telephone did not work, the safe was locked on arrival, the mattress was lumpy, and the bed frame cracked loudly when we moved, enough to wake one another. There was also no tea or coffee making facilities available in the room. We stayed in several other similar price point hotels on this trip and all had coffee machines, tea, mini-bar etc.

Dinner was disappointing and felt very mass-produced compared to the presentation shown online. The restaurant is very brightly lit at night and was mostly filled with families when we were there. A telling detail about the hotel is the restaurant’s water policy. We were informed tap water would only be served if we ordered wine. As non-drinkers, this meant purchasing bottled water alongside soft drinks. At the hotel’s price point, the rigidity of this policy feels out of step with basic hospitality. It’s worth noting that the restaurant staff were warm, courteous, and accommodating throughout our meal. They apologized for the policy and explained it was hotel policy and not something they were allowed to change.

Most concerning was the reception staff’s lack of empathy, which stood in particularly stark contrast to the friendliness we experienced in the restaurant. At check-in we expressed our disappointment about the very poor room view and room temperature, after an extremely poor first night’s sleep, we returned to reception hopeful that a different room might have become available due to a cancellation. The staff member opened the conversation with, “my colleague told me about you, we already told you we have no other room,” and reiterated that they could do nothing. We were told the owner had declined any flexibility. The only option offered was to move to a lower room category - smaller size, but with a better view - two days later without any refund of the difference in cost. Given the lack of viable options, meal quality, and the tone of these interactions, we made the difficult decision to check out four days early with zero refund.

Though we were always polite to the staff despite the extremely disappointing experience and service, there was never any acknowledgment of our displeasure, and no courteous farewell.

This hotel may suit travelers looking for a large, functional ski base geared toward families with basic-standard of amenities. It did not resemble the cozy or luxurious alpine retreat we believed we were booking. For us, the mismatch in comfort, atmosphere, and service was significant enough to justify leaving and forfeiting four prepaid nights.

We share this review so future guests can make an informed decision about what kind of experience to expect.

We've just returned from an exceptional skiing holiday at this hotel in Ober Wirl, up the road from Galtur village. I can't fault anything. Our main reasons for selecting this hotel were the ski-in-ski-out location in Austria, with half board, being in a smaller resort with other non-skiing facilities as options - eg pool, sauna, massages, walking routes etc. Everything was top class - the welcome, ambiance, friendliness, professionalism, food (goodness what a selection and quality), room size & cleanliness. Nothing was 'off the menu' in my opinion. The tour company we booked with fell very short on our transfers and left us at the bottom of a steep hill approach to the hotel, leaving us to pull our heavy luggage several hundred metres up to Reception. Mattias helped to arrange a taxi for the return on departure day, along with some food to make up for a couple of meals missed as a result, at each end of our stay. Whether booking yourself, or as a package, I would advise you ensure transfers 'airport to actual door' are in place. It was easy to find and access all the hotel facilities and it was genuinely on the slopes. We were very lucky with our spacious, clean and well appointed double room in a quiet location on the first floor with a lovely view back down the valley to Galtur village. There was loads of storage in the room too. I might have been disappointed if allocated a similar room at the back, overlooking the carpark, so be aware if you're booking in the future. Also, being very British, I like to be able to make a cuppa in the afternoon. So we took a travel kettle and a few teabags&milk of my own, as these aren't provided. However this wouldn't have been a deal breaker for me, given that everything else was top notch. I do hope we can return to this place, and are even considering the summer to try out some of the walking trails. Our days of wanting to ski from first lift to last are over, so we don't need the huge ski areas any more. However if that's your preference, it would be easy to ski across/down from the hotel to very near the free ski bus stop and go to Ischgl. There are many ski pass flexible options, including ones which include a couple of days in that area. The ski hire place staff were also friendly and helpful, so can recommend them too. There isn't a shop in Wirl for snacks souvenirs etc, so this would need a walk or bus trip into Galtur for this. We didn't feel the need during just one week to go off site though, and the prices in the various mountain restaurants were very reasonable (if you even have room for any more food) - so refreshing after having skied in France for many years. I must thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone - it's clear why guests return each year. I shall finish with "Go, and Enjoy"

Really nice hotel with a per-fect location. The views from the restaurant, lounge, rooms and wellness are really magnificent. You feel part of the mountain. The food is excellent. The breakfast is impressive. The staff is sooooo helpful. The wellness is very well done. We went there for ski, but it must be great in summer too .

Just returned from a fabulous family ski trip with my wife and 5 year old daughter and we loved this hotel. Booked as a package through Crystal ski as what appealed was a smaller, family friendly resort with ski in/out accommodation. The Almhof didn’t disappoint and the staff, room, food was all excellent. In particular the breakfast buffet and evening meal was outstanding, with incredible choice for breakfast and a 4 course meal each evening which was fine dining (children’s menu each night kept our daughter happy). The staff were all excellent and worked extremely hard in both the restaurant and onsite bar which opens right on to the slopes. Very few Brits here as the clientele is Austrian and German and knowing a little German will help. Ski lifts and ski school right on the doorstep so no ski buses required which was a real bonus. Wouldn’t hesitate to return here!

I can't say enough good things about this place!
We (me, husband, his parents) stayed for a week in early December on a half board basis and LOVED it. The breakfast buffet is generous and delicious, and the five course dinners are out of this world. All the staff were also a delight - kind, helpful and very tolerant of my school-girl German.
The spa is amazing, with a variety of saunas and steam rooms as well as a pool and hot tub. Robes and towels are provided.
The rooms are also very comfortable and well furnished, but a little on the warm side for us. Easily solved by opening the windows though, and we all slept well every night.
We had an amazing time, and would love to return!

Having spent a skiing week with family and a group of friends at Hotel Almhof I am glad to recommend it for great service, fantastic food , nicely renovated amenities and location next to the slope in Galtuer Wirl and just a few kilometres from Ischgl skiing paradise. The owners make sure to maintain its local character while offering high quality food and wine experience. Beyond expectations.

Excellent hotel, friendly staff. Very good location, right next to the tracks. Recently renovated pool. A flood is dedicated to calm and resting with mountain view. Large and quiet rooms.
