Hotel Balkan in Gabrovo

The location is one of the two positive things I can say about this hotel. The other one was the atmosphere and the food of the restaurant. But only if you are lucky to find a free table. The room desperately needs renovation, ventilation and heating. The AC unit was completely broken and didn't function. The bath wasn't very clean and each evening smelled of food, which I assume was prepared in the restaurant's kitchen. Although smoking is forbidden, the hallway reeked of cigarettes and sometimes weed. I know it is the other guests that violated the rules, yet nobody from management took any action to ventilate the hallway. The service at the reception was disappointing. I was charged for double room and then given a room for singles. There is no room service. At reception I was told, they only got the phone of the restaurant's manager, but she ain't waitress and doesn't accept any orders. The only way to order any food for the room, is to chase the waitresses in the restaurant and convince them to take your order and then call you to come pick it.
The breakfast was a complete joke. Out of 4 nights spent at the hotel I attempted to have breakfast twice. Both times the breakfast consisted of a plate of white and yellow cheese, plate of ham, bowl of chopped tomatoes, a bowl of sliced cucumbers, butter, jam, few slices of bread and cornflakes. The jugs that were supposed to contain coffee and milk were always empty and weren't refilled, while I was there. There was no water, yogurt, tea or hot water.
During lunch and dinner the restaurant gets busy, so finding table is a challenge, but if you manage to secure a table, you are in for a treat. The food is delicious and takes a bit of time to be prepared. Smoking is allowed in the outer side of the restaurant.
I had to use the hotel out of necessity, so if you have the option to choose a hotel, don't pick hotel Balkan.

Location is good. Food is not bad but the service and the personal was terrible except for one blond waitress girl. All other personnel had very bad attitude. Other problem was that we had apartment booked with breakfast and were two adults and one 2 year old kid. They asked for additional fee for breakfast for the kid (never happened till now).

The most awful hotel ever! The noise from a bloody party did not end until late in the night. You can hear your neighbours all night long. No parking slots as promised. The receptionist is just there because she has nothing else to do! Are you people crazy to offer this hotel at all? Honestly go find something else! Obviously you have no idea what tourism is and how it works! never again? Hopefully you will be out of business soon!

Dirty old place.

Small room, curtains extremely dusty, need urgent wash, air-conditioner flap black with dust, black mould on tiles in shower, beds very uncomfortable - would not recommend
