Now the not-so-good experiences:
1) The room card did not work for 3-nights in a row. I had to walk back to the reception every time for the staff to fix it. For the first night, there was a notification for the room access upgrade so it was understandable but there was no explanation for the subsequent nights.
2) Bottled water is not replenished during the daily room make-up. I had to call and ask for it everyday.
3) Obvious wear and tear in the room, e.g. yellow stain on the sink, room door scratches, etc. Not to the extent of unlivable but it’s hard to accept at the price point.
4) I requested for electronic invoice to be sent to my email during check-out (and the staff verified my email address then) but it only came 4 days later and after sending email the hotel to request again.
All points considered, I’m not sure if the staff attitude is sufficient to make me a returning customer.
The Sofitel is well located in Strasbourg, close to all the major attractions and public transport. The staff are friendly and attentive. The hotel is somewhat worn in places with stained carpets in corridors and room lobbies. Bed was clean and comfortable and the room was quiet.
Staff were nice and housekeeping was great (very clean), this review is about the condition of the hotel. The hotel definitely doesn’t feel like ‘5 stars’; dated & run down, musty/damp room smell that doesn’t go away, a lot of ambient HVAC background noise. Won’t be booking Sofitel by default again for a while.
The price-quality ratio is terrible. We arrived on a Saturday at 11:00 p.m. and there was only one person handling everything: check-in, parking, and room service, with no help for the luggage. At that time, guests must carry their own suitcases and park the car in a garage a block and a half away.
The room (first floor) is small for four people, dark, with carpets and curtains that smell of dampness and dirt, clearly poorly ventilated. The air conditioning doesn’t cool, and the bathroom is uncomfortable. The overall environment does not feel clean: the fragrance they use does not cover the dirty smell.
Room service is extremely limited: only three fixed options (salad, pizza, and pasta), with no possibility to choose ingredients. The pizza seems frozen and reheated, the pasta comes pre-made with ham and cream (inedible), and the “Caesar” salad has nothing to do with a real Caesar.
The location is good, but the sidewalk in front of the hotel was dirty and smelled of garbage, which was unpleasant in the heat.
The only redeeming factor is the kindness of all the staff (breakfast, cleaning, and reception), always attentive and with a good attitude. I would not repeat the experience
