Chachacha Hôtel in Nantes

A stone's throw from the train station, convenient for visiting the city center, new and very well-maintained. Breakfast was okay, though not particularly exciting.

I stayed at the Hotel de Bourgogne during Hellfest 2019. Being that the hotel is very close to the train station, this was convenient for getting to and from Clisson. I was travelling alone and did not have the ability to bring camping equipment to Hellfest. Also, I would not want to risk having my passport, wallet, or suitcase stolen, so it was necessary to find a nearby hotel.

The Hotel de Bourgogne was cheap and conveniently located, so I booked a room for a few nights. The hotel looks like it has not changed in 30 years. There was mold on one of the walls in my room. The water in the shower drained a little too slowly, so you had to shower quickly to avoid overflowing. I was warned at least 3 times to be quiet when I checked-in. You can hear other guests through the walls, especially if they are talking loudly, so it would be wise to bring earplugs (it is always a good idea to travel with earplugs). The area feels kind of seedy, but I never felt unsafe and Nantes in general seems to be very safe.

Obviously, this hotel is not the Ritz Carlton, however for me it was totally acceptable. It was a place to sleep between days at Hellfest, and for that it was perfect. On the first night, coming back from Clisson, I had to page the clerk who was a bit surly (though it was after 3:00 AM, so I cannot really fault him for that). The nights after were fine and there was always somebody ready to check people in when the trains arrived.

All-in-all, the Hotel de Bourgogne is a cheap, old hotel near the train station. The price is reasonable for the location and amenities. If you go with low expectations, it is totally fine. I would not bring a family here (because of mold, bathroom, location, and noise problems), but as a man traveling alone it was clean and safe enough that I could comfortably sleep, shower, store my suitcase, and go to Hellfest during the day. If I ever attend another Hellfest, I would definitely consider staying at Hotel de Bourgogne again.
