Check-in was quick and easy. Go inside the cafe and ask to check-in at the cashier. We looked on Google Maps prior to arrival and saw the the parking lot behind the hotel. We found a spot there. The gate may be closed, but they give you several keys for all the locks in the building. If not, you can park out front at the cafe until you get situated. There is no front desk or 24-hour reception (other than when the cafe is opened). All the rooms are upstairs, and we did not see a elevator. They spoke better English than we did Italian and gave us a cup of cappuccino!
We stayed in the Duomo Room. It was large with a sofa, dining table, chairs, refrigerator, mini bar, coffee pot, balcony, and two single beds pushed together to make a king. There is a mini-split heating and cooling unit over the bed so you can control the room temperature without having to wait for “summer” or “winter“ as some European hotels mandate.
The balcony faces the Piazza and the cafes outside can be opened late at night on weekends. It can be loud. If you are a light sleeper, I would recommend a second bottle of wine to help you sleep or ear plugs. We use a white noise app on our phone at home and while we travel that plays a waterfall all night, and we could still hear the commotion below. This did not keep us awake.
There are church bells across the street That start ringing every morning at 7:45. There is no sound insulation in the room. We loved it and miss them already.
The WiFi was good, but not great. We had to log-in all the time. The cell phone signal in the room wasn’t great either, but both were good enough for maps, Facebook, and some videos.
The bathroom is huge with two sinks, toilet, hair dryer, and bidet. Unfortunately, the shower is a microscopic. My wife and I are under 6’ tall. It’s so small that you can’t bend over to wash your feet. It also leaks water all over the place. There are body jets, a hand-held wand, and a rain-shower. The shower is so small that it is not practical. The hot water fluctuates between cold and hot, with not much in between.
Breakfast is served downstairs in the rear of the cafe when it is opened and upstairs in the front room on Mondays when the cafe is closed. We never saw a menu, but it seems like they will make you anything they have: Meats, cheese, juice, pastry, cappuccino, and omelettes. It’s not a typical hotel buffet.
The people who work there are great, and we will stay here again when we return to Alba.

Cafe and Restaurants near hotel
Oh, and before I forget, if you come in October, you'll also get the benefit of the town festival, which is amazing.
On the service side, really wonderful and attentive from all -- the (young!) sommelier even provided a sort of faux pairing of a handful of very nice and local wines, which added about 120€ to the check (very reasonable compared to the "grand tasting"). My wife also appreciated the nonalcoholic options (a really delicious and surprisingly subtle kombucha as well as a "hyperlow" gin and tonic). The only minor note regarding service is that breadcrumbs were only swept once (rather late as well) and the water pouring was aggressive (splashes on to the table). Things that don't matter anywhere except a three-star restaurant!
Pacing of the food -- perhaps a little on the slow side (our meal lasted about 4 hours), but at the very least our hosts visited in between quite naturally, somewhat alleviating the lull between dishes.
The room we were in (three tables upstairs) felt a little sterile despite some wonderful tapestries by an American-Ukrainian artist. No music here, which was certainly a little awkward at first, but as the meals started and the choreography of the service time kicked in, the feeling dissipated. Just enjoy the food and talk to the team!
We appreciated very much the opportunity to meet the chef and take a photo, and also a surprise gift (subtly presented without fanfare at the end, we think for our special occasion). Our total was about 1000€, in fact lower than I expected since I let the sommelier choose the wines. Worth it if you find these kinds of experiences meaningful in the same way other hobbyists do. Perhaps not for the first-timer.
