Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel, Yamanouchi1 / 30
8.1
Chubu region, Yamanouchi, Yakebitai-yama, Shiga Kogen 🧭 Map
Good location, but small and old room. Overall still quite good. Recommended for ski in ski out
Everything is find and meet our expectation. Ski in ski out the hotel, free locker, also have onsen. No adverse comment and experience. It’s much convenient if you drive to hotel
Maybe the West Wing is relatively cheaper, which explains why the food and accommodation are so basic. I suffered from severe insomnia for the first few days, and the room lights were extremely dim, which was baffling
The hotel is clean, nice view from the room. Ski in ski out is very convenient, locker is big enough to store 3 sets of equipments
Another thing was that we had the room at the end of the corridor which the furthest away from the lift- it was a long walk to the lift, around 100m. It’s better to request for a room near the lifts (lifts are not noisy)
My ski pants broke on the trip and we went to so many different shops in shigakogen but only found 2 shops that sold a very limited selection of ski pants - Restaurant St Christophe (at Okushiga) and Snowcan Ichinose Diamond shop

Shiga Palace Hotel, Yamanouchi1 / 30
8.0
Chubu region, Yamanouchi, 7148 Hirao 🧭 Map
Service oriented hotel with friendly staff and ski in ski out options to the highest mountain in Nagano (also has a ski/snowboard school with kind boss) Breakfast and Dinner options were plentiful and varied spread which is a better option for room with meals options as there isn’t much open by 5pm in the vicinity
Nearest free shuttle stop is 2min walk from hotel (Hotaru Onsen) Would highly recommend to friends to return for snow holidays (mostly Japanese and only a handful of tourists) but there’s a friendly English speaking staff
Shiga Palace Hotel is a great choice for its location alone—set right in the mountains, it offers easy access to the surrounding area and beautiful scenery that really adds to the experience
great food and great service from the staff. amazing room and view from the hotel. we group of 19 was the only customer on that 1 night stay, we were given full attention and best service
The rooms were very traditional Japanese style, which felt authentic and fitting for the setting. While simple, they gave a true sense of staying in a classic Japanese hotel
One of the highlights was the buffet meals. The food was plentiful, varied, and satisfying, making it easy to refuel after a long day of exploring

It was in good business condition. I booked a top-floor room with an area of 42 square meters. It was sunny and had a mountain view. The room pictures had not been updated, but it had actually been renovated
We had a great stay at the Okushiga Phoenix Hotel. The Italian dinner was simply perfect, the onsen was wonderful and relaxing, and the staff were consistently friendly and professional.
Great hotel, delicious food, professional and very helpful stuff, great facilities (onsen, pool, sauna, cold bath) and TOP location - ski in/out. We stayed here for 5 nights and will definitely return
the swiss/alpine theme has been applied thoroughly, with high quality and love to detail: many paintings come from davos/klosters and the building itself provides a charming atmosphere and feels like being teleported to an alpine chalet
amazing place to stay for winter, great skiing and snowboarding rental area and great slope, the hotel restaurants are super nice, on the expensive end but worth it! recommend the Japanese restaurant! the hosts are nice and the rooms are very comfortable
In the middle, I passed the mountain station where there was a cable car for sightseeing. As I walked further, I saw some dilapidated hotels. I was very worried, but when I reached the end, I could see the hotel

The facilities are a bit dated, but considering I've stayed here multiple times across two generations, it maintains a certain standard. Plus, there's a fantastic indoor heated pool. I've stayed here twice already
Loved my stay in this japanese style hotel: traditional room with a great view to the mountains, very stylish public spaces, enormous dinner and breakfast. You can walk right from the hotel to the monkey park.
I liked the snow-covered garden and the view of the mountains from my balcony. Be aware that the ryokan is family friendly so you may be eating your nine-course kaiseki to the sounds of screaming toddlers
The shuttle service was super convenient, and the location right at the entrance of the Wild Monkey Park is unbeatable. The service was exceptional, and both breakfast and dinner were incredibly generous
The meals were delicious and thoughtfully prepared, and the onsen was relaxing and beautifully kept. It was a wonderful experience overall, and I would love to come back again
Perfect place to stay! Location is really good, it’s easy close to the snow monkey park and bus station. Hotel is beautiful and authentic. Breakfast and dinner were amazing

This is an older, but well renovated hotel near the slopes. It’s an all-in-one hotel too, with a convenience / souvenir store and a massive onsen (with sauna). We enjoyed our stay here; the meals were also pretty good
Very nice hotel with super convenient location. Also very to pleased with onsens and sauna!

Chubu region, Yamanouchi, 2200 Hirao, Shimotakai District, 381-0401 Yamanouti, uezd Simotakai, Prefektura Nagano, Yaponiya 🧭 Map
All of them are awesome and there is no need to reserve, we tried all 6 of them + the 9 public baths in Shibu Onsen nearby. The meals are very good, great service and hospitality
The hotel is surrounded by several temples of varying sizes and different springs nestled in the mountains. The water temperatures of these springs vary, with the highest reaching 56°C
We stayed for 2 nights at a room without bath. When we arrived we were a bit concerned because it looks old, but after settling in we found this ryokan to be excellent
The ninth onsen is the largest, featuring a golden bath and a sauna. Next to it is a hot spring shrine and foot bath, right next to Kokuya
There are dedicated luggage handlers (three floors in total), creating a perfect setting for a period drama, reminiscent of Yubaba's old house in Spirited Away… The hotel also offers traditional Japanese kaiseki dinners with over nine dishes
All guest rooms are designed in a traditional Japanese style, featuring Japanese-style bedding and a bathroom with a sink, TV, safe, refrigerator, towels, and yukata. Ten guest rooms have private outdoor baths

The onsen was extremely hot and had an absolutely gorgeous view. The older couple that runs it were incredibly kind and hospitable to me, including a shuttle to the Monkeg Park and Yamanaka Station free of charge
It was brilliant! It is the same with pictures on this site. They gave me yukata and towel and changed it every day. I had a tea and enjoyed it on my balcony. I tried a futon at first time in my life
I was later than their last check in and they accommodated me and even made a multi course traditional Japanese meal at 9pm, the food for breakfast and dinner was delicious
The personelle were super nice and helpful. They provided a free bus ride to the snow monkey park. The room was spacious and comfy. The hotel dinner and breakfast were amazing
The is also a sauna and an outdoor hotpool. There is also a cafe on the ground level with burgers, fries, tacos and drinks if you do not want Japanese food
Great blend of modern amenities with traditional ryoken hotel. Beautiful surroundings and atmosphere, specially during winter. Just wish there was more hooks to hang the towels. Overall great stay and highly recommend

Chubu region, Yamanouchi, 2941-50 Hirao 🧭 Map
The room was very comfortable for a family with a small child! There's a private hot spring for families available by reservation, though the usage time is a bit short, it's still great overall! The food is high-quality, delicious, and varied
It's also possible to extend your stay for 1000 yen per hour, which is super convenient when traveling with a child. The hotel corridors aren't perfectly clean due to age, but the room itself is clean and pleasant
(+) Nice private onsen pool/ room that you can use alone for 30 mins Pingpong and karaoke room Warm blanket and nice heater (-) The receptionist at night can be more friendly. Theres mold on my room ceiling
The room was very large and comfortable. What made the place great was the ping pong table, mini pool table. Once you understand the onsen process it is pretty easy. Note: restaurant is by reservation only
Dinner snow crab dinner is worth the price. Also cash only needed do the hotel tax due at arrival
Building is not the newest itself, but this is not a problem at all, as has traditional Japanese style rooms, cosy inside and outside baths. Has everything you need, to enjoy

Spend the w/e’s in Tokyo and on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning take a bullet train to one of the 100 to 200 ski resorts by bullet train 2 hours outside Tokyo and you will have the place to ourselves
For instance: First, There is a ski mat in the beginners area but they never turned it on! After watching my novice partner spend 45 minutes of the first hour trudging up a gently slope with her ski instructor to learn how to do “pizza skis” down I asked why it wasn’t working
Every time we dealt with the Reception Desk they always worked hard to understand our needs, and especially Yoshi – san who with a smile always provided valuable friendly advice as he went above and beyond the call of duty
So we spent 5 days in this hotel & loved it. We enjoyed an empty hotel, zero queues, excellent snow. 90 minutes by bullet train from Tokyo and then 90 minutes by bus. The hotel is truly ski in & sort of ski out
I found the ski rentals good enough for an advanced skier. Pleasingly the hotel provides good ski lockers so of a morning it’s easy to gear up & ski out to get on a lift. I have no complaints about the hotel
Thirdly, exited every ski lift gave you a short down hill run into a basin and then you had to trudge uphill to ski away. Seriously, who designs a ski lift exit to create congestion at the exit

While I was there, only one member of staff was manning the front desk as well undertaking other responsibilities around the hotel, but a phone was left at the front desk so you could call when you needed assistance
The accommodations were clean and comfortable and enjoyed the retro-feel. The free drinks and snacks in the lounge area were a nice touch and I loved the outdoor Onsen
Only one night stay but can’t complain and was able to store my bags there after check out while I went to the snow monkeys which was a great bonus.
Room was good size and bed was comfortable. Hotel is close to Yudanaka station and shops. Enjoyed my stay.

We ate breakfast / dinner at the hotel and told the staff that some of the group were vegetarians, a challenge in Japan generally, and they made sure there was a plate of cooked vegetables for each of them at every meal
There was not a lot of English spoked but the staff on the front desk were very friendly, very helpful and experts in the use of the translator app on the iPad
Another plus point is that they have rooms that can accommodate early check-in and late check-out. If there is one complaint, it is that the water in the large bath was too hot to enter
Found this place about a week before our trip when most places were booked out. It was very good value for money and the staff were very friendly
The top of the first chair lift from the Ryuoo Ski Park literally on it's doorstep. There are a coupe of hot onsens inside the building
They then pick you up from the Ryuoo Ski Park information centre in a snow mobile for free. The hotel is a little out of the way and appears to get a few school groups going through but would definitely go back

Easy to get to Okushiga and at the same time close to all the food and bars! Highly recommend, we will be coming back! Nice little Onsen/bathhouse as well, tattoos, no problem!
The room was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom had also been renovated and was very comfortable. The food was a buffet, but it was obvious that the food was frozen and not very tasty.
Autumn leaves have begun, and in Ichinuma (lakeside), the autumn leaves are mirrored and the scenery is wonderful
Also some shabu shabu places opposite the hotel as well as a yamazaki store and yakiniku too. There was a rental shop at hotel but really basic. The bath was also average only. The place has no body lotion so be aware!
The state of emergency was lifted and touring to Shiga Kogen. I am staying at Shiga Ichii Hotel. Infectious disease control and social distance are also solid
Perfect Ryoken, right in the middle of arguably the two best slopes (other than Okushiga, my all time favorite)

When a taxi booking to Shiga Kogen fell through due to heavy snow, the owner personally drove me there, which I deeply appreciated. He also printed out the bus schedule and made sure I knew exactly how to get back
Awesome location for visiting Jigokudani Park (snow monkeys in hot springs) but otherwise isolated. The room was very spacious, especially considering i was a solo traveler
That level of care really stood out. The ryokan is conveniently located near the Snow Monkey Park, making it easy to visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive
I'd been to other food forward ryokans elsewhere before and while they were fancier, the food at Jinpyokaku Honten was better or maybe just more suited to my tastes
Finally, while this is close to shibu onsen, it is not part of it and shibu onsen is about a 30 min walk away and you don't have access to the public baths there (to do the 9 bath crawl)
My husband and I stayed here 4 nights for our honeymoon, and we are so glad we did. The stay includes a private kaiseki dining experience for breakfast and dinner

Ichiro, the innkeeper, was very kind and even drove us to the snow money reserve and back free of charge. Nice to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan. Highly recommended.
Clean room, comfortable, simple breakfast And good location. It is exactly as described.
We loved it there. This town is about a 15 minute walk to Shu
Facilities: Both the private and public baths are on the first floor, but the private bath is very small and can only accommodate two adults; the public bath area does not provide makeup removers and extra towels, so remember to bring your own if you want to take a bath
No dinner was provided, and the breakfast was also very simple (only milk, coffee, yogurt, toast and fruit, 700 yen/person), but the store sent us to the Snow Monkey Park and Yudanaka Station for free
Convenience: It is a 7-minute walk from Yudanaka Station, but we went there in February when it snowed. We were inexperienced for the first time and dragged our suitcases up the snowy road

Opting in for the meals is a must! Parking is available in their private garage, approximately a 3–5 minute walk from the ryokan across the road, which is convenient given the narrow streets of the area
The kaiseki dinner and authentic Japanese breakfast were the highlights. The Shinshu beef was excellent , even added an extra serving at my own expense & the sashimi was notably fresh and well-prepared
A private onsen is available for booking (one-hour slots) upon check-in and throughout your stay, which adds a level of flexibility and privacy that is not always guaranteed in traditional ryokan
Having stayed in numerous ryokan over the years, I can confidently say this is one of the most memorable. The attention to detail, hospitality, and overall atmosphere were exceptional
Guests are also provided a key granting complimentary access to all nine public bathhouses in Shibu Onsen, a privilege reserved exclusively for ryokan guests in the town. It significantly enhances the overall experience
Impeccable service, gracious hosts, beautifully maintained facility, comfortable bedding. This ryokan was everything and more we could have wished for! The private onsen amenity was an unexpected delight!

All guests get to reserve 30 minutes of private use each evening, which was wonderful, but you can also go back during men's time, women's time, or mixed if you want to enjoy some more
Tawaraya is a very nice Ryokan and Onsen in the small town of Yudanaka. While not very distinctive from the outside, the interior is very quaint
The rooms are traditional Japanese tatami rooms with futons and low tables, and ours had a private western-style toilet attached (with all the Japanese gadgets that are the norm!)
There are both a male and female only indoor onsen where you can shower and bathe from 1600 - 0900 daily. In addition there is a beautiful outdoor onsen surrounded by rocks and a Japanese garden
The temperature of the onsen is perfect. Hot enough to be comfortable, but not too hot so you can't stay in! There are also slightly cooler sections of the pool or areas to sit partly out of the water if desired
, plus an additional hot-pot you use to cook an additional dish provided. Very yummy and filling (and I'm not usually a fan of Japanese breakfasts - but each one we had was different and satisfying)

We visited in the quiet season but the hotel was lovely and the staff were very friendly & helpful. There's a restaurant at the hotel and it has it's own onsen, which is great. Rooms are Japanese-style & very comfortable
Reception helped us proactively for the very late check-in at 10:30pm. The room fixture and hotel facilities are old but within my expectation in that area and price range. Neat and tidy for the tatami setup
The onsen is big and the hot spring water is good. They just provide you the cold bread for reheat at breakfast. I gave up the breakfast and left
Everyone on staff made us feel welcome from the start. Aziz and both ladies at the front desk were extremely helpful and lovely people. We will always remember them abs their friendliness and how nice our stay was
The property is a little old and it shows in some areas but overall it was a great experience. The staff were all amazing and the bathhouse was excellent. Very short walk to the train and bus station.
A relatively traditional Japanese-style hotel. We had dinner at the izakaya opposite. There are set meals and a la carte options. The breakfast was a bit simple and only had bread, coffee and juice

8.2
Chubu region, Yamanouchi, Shigakogen, Yamanouchi-machi 🧭 Map
Pros: - spacious room (a rarity in Japan) - true ski in and ski out - breakfast with some variety - the store on the first floor sells food / snacks / drinks / alcohol of some variety at relatively reasonable prices (will mention this in cons as well) Cons: - almost nothing around to eat for dinner except for 1
a store on the first floor that sells bento boxes (if you get there early) or bread or instant noodles and 3
a pizza place not too far in Club Wyndham - could be a bit cold at night (but you can just pile on duvets) - relatively small shower room with no shower curtain others: - if I think of Shiga Kogen as a strip, Hatsuke (where the hotel is) is pretty much at one end of it
Fantastic hospitality from the staff. They were very helpful in getting us together whenever we needed help. One can ski in and out of the hotel right onto the ski hill
It's not the most central location. For people who would like to cover all the mountains, you can ski from this side all the way to the other end and back
For those who would like to pick specific mountains to ski on, the mountain you like could be quite close or far away from you

Went for lunch while skiing - they made us a lovely vegan curry when we explained we could not eat from their normal menu. This lodge really knows how to cook so I would trust anything they made.
Their Cafe is open for morning tea and lunch - famous apple pie. Rooms are a good aize and clean. Staff are very accommodating and friendly. You can hire ski gear and buy lift tickets here
Real ski in / ski out accommodation. Great staff and good food for a very reasonable price. Relaxing onsen inside the hotel. Children are welcome and they are treated really well
Easy to get to - bus from Nagano Station 3,000yen, catch the gondola down (free with accommodation), accommodation is a 3 minute walk at most
Great location for snowboarding/skiing because there are 3 lifts in walking distance that you can easily ski-in/out, however, it is not that convenient to go out to other towns
Thank you to all the staff for their kindness, we had a great stay

Chubu region, Yamanouchi, Shiga Kogen Ichinose 🧭 Map
The bath wasn't a hot spring, but it was spacious and relaxing. Dinner was a half buffet with a main dish. It was luxurious, something we rarely see these days, and the food was delicious
It's located right next to Ichinose Family Ski Resort, so it's easy to walk to the ski resort and ski right to the hotel on your way back
Only complaint was I needed three futon cushions to make a comfortable bed, but no drama as there were several in the closet. And a fridge in the room would have been nice, but realize that is not Japan-style
I took a bus from Nagano Station, and the Ichinose bus stop is also nearby, which is great. The building is old, but the rooms have been renovated and are very new and comfortable. (The TV was large, which is unusual
I found out that by putting water bottles in the space between the double pane windows, they would get extremely cold but not freeze
It has the best selection of restaurants in the area, with four in the hotel. I tried three of them, all excellent meals
