Good location, but small and old room. Overall still quite good. Recommended for ski in ski out
Everything is find and meet our expectation. Ski in ski out the hotel, free locker, also have onsen. No adverse comment and experience. It’s much convenient if you drive to hotel
Maybe the West Wing is relatively cheaper, which explains why the food and accommodation are so basic. I suffered from severe insomnia for the first few days, and the room lights were extremely dim, which was baffling
The hotel is clean, nice view from the room. Ski in ski out is very convenient, locker is big enough to store 3 sets of equipments
Breakfast and dinner buffets were pretty decent - there was a wide variety of foods to choose from. The west building was conveniently located near two chairlifts and we could head to different ski areas easily
This hotel is conveniently located near Ichinose which has many restaurants. There is ski and snowboard equipment with clothing for rental at the hotel, but not for purchase

Hotel is old, there was signs of termite infection that was cleared.
Food was ok.
Service was excellent, really everyone there was very helpful!
Good location 300m to ski chairs.
Shiga Palace Hotel is a great choice for its location alone—set right in the mountains, it offers easy access to the surrounding area and beautiful scenery that really adds to the experience
Overall, the location and meals are major pluses, and the traditional rooms and onsen make this hotel a unique and enjoyable stay
Service oriented hotel with friendly staff and ski in ski out options to the highest mountain in Nagano (also has a ski/snowboard school with kind boss)
Breakfast and Dinner options were plentiful and varied spread which is a better option for room with meals options as there isn’t much open by 5pm in the vicinity
Nearest free shuttle stop is 2min walk from hotel (Hotaru Onsen)
Would highly recommend to friends to return for snow holidays (mostly Japanese and only a handful of tourists) but there’s a friendly English speaking staff
great food and great service from the staff. amazing room and view from the hotel. we group of 19 was the only customer on that 1 night stay, we were given full attention and best service

The temperature of the onsen is perfect. Hot enough to be comfortable, but not too hot so you can't stay in! There are also slightly cooler sections of the pool or areas to sit partly out of the water if desired
There are both a male and female only indoor onsen where you can shower and bathe from 1600 - 0900 daily. In addition there is a beautiful outdoor onsen surrounded by rocks and a Japanese garden
Like most onsens, any form of clothing/bathing suit/large towel is not allowed. Yukata, tabi socks and towels for before/after the onsen are provided, as well as a small one to bring into the onsen
This onsen has specific times set aside for male-only, female-only, mixed, and private bathing. The private sessions are in the evening from 1900-2100 in 30 minute slots
These session are booked in advance, and you can choose from available times, so you know when you can go and have the entire pool to yourself
There is no private shower or bath attached to the room, however the main attraction of this place is access to the onsen

It was in good business condition. I booked a top-floor room with an area of 42 square meters. It was sunny and had a mountain view. The room pictures had not been updated, but it had actually been renovated
We had a great stay at the Okushiga Phoenix Hotel. The Italian dinner was simply perfect, the onsen was wonderful and relaxing, and the staff were consistently friendly and professional.
Great hotel, delicious food, professional and very helpful stuff, great facilities (onsen, pool, sauna, cold bath) and TOP location - ski in/out. We stayed here for 5 nights and will definitely return
the swiss/alpine theme has been applied thoroughly, with high quality and love to detail: many paintings come from davos/klosters and the building itself provides a charming atmosphere and feels like being teleported to an alpine chalet
amazing place to stay for winter, great skiing and snowboarding rental area and great slope, the hotel restaurants are super nice, on the expensive end but worth it! recommend the Japanese restaurant! the hosts are nice and the rooms are very comfortable
In the middle, I passed the mountain station where there was a cable car for sightseeing. As I walked further, I saw some dilapidated hotels. I was very worried, but when I reached the end, I could see the hotel

The onsen was extremely hot and had an absolutely gorgeous view. The older couple that runs it were incredibly kind and hospitable to me, including a shuttle to the Monkeg Park and Yamanaka Station free of charge
It was brilliant!
It is the same with pictures on this site. They gave me yukata and towel and changed it every day. I had a tea and enjoyed it on my balcony. I tried a futon at first time in my life
I was later than their last check in and they accommodated me and even made a multi course traditional Japanese meal at 9pm, the food for breakfast and dinner was delicious
The gentleman at the reception was accommodating to us and gave us a few rides from the hotel to different locations (station, monkey park)
Great blend of modern amenities with traditional ryoken hotel. Beautiful surroundings and atmosphere, specially during winter. Just wish there was more hooks to hang the towels. Overall great stay and highly recommend
The onsen was really hot which took some time getting used to but I think that’s part of the experience. Only real downside were the hard pillows which seem to be a theme in Japan

Stayed while visiting the snow monkeys. The location was ideal and the food was very good.
Unfortunately, the location is relatively far away and the spa hygiene is very average, plus the spa space is very little
While I was there, only one member of staff was manning the front desk as well undertaking other responsibilities around the hotel, but a phone was left at the front desk so you could call when you needed assistance
The accommodations were clean and comfortable and enjoyed the retro-feel. The free drinks and snacks in the lounge area were a nice touch and I loved the outdoor Onsen
Only one night stay but can’t complain and was able to store my bags there after check out while I went to the snow monkeys which was a great bonus.
Room was good size and bed was comfortable. Hotel is close to Yudanaka station and shops. Enjoyed my stay.

Awesome location for visiting Jigokudani Park (snow monkeys in hot springs) but otherwise isolated. The room was very spacious, especially considering i was a solo traveler
I'd been to other food forward ryokans elsewhere before and while they were fancier, the food at Jinpyokaku Honten was better or maybe just more suited to my tastes
From the seafood appetizers to the shinsu beef to the tsunomono to the local Yukoshiro Mai rice - everything was incredible visually and tasty
The private onsen attached to the room was unexpected and must appreciated. The food was the highlight of my 2 night stay
The food was locally sourced and fresh, and they were able to accommodate a pescatarian diet
Finally, while this is close to shibu onsen, it is not part of it and shibu onsen is about a 30 min walk away and you don't have access to the public baths there (to do the 9 bath crawl)

For instance: First, There is a ski mat in the beginners area but they never turned it on! After watching my novice partner spend 45 minutes of the first hour trudging up a gently slope with her ski instructor to learn how to do “pizza skis” down I asked why it wasn’t working
So we spent 5 days in this hotel & loved it. We enjoyed an empty hotel, zero queues, excellent snow. 90 minutes by bullet train from Tokyo and then 90 minutes by bus. The hotel is truly ski in & sort of ski out
I found the ski rentals good enough for an advanced skier. Pleasingly the hotel provides good ski lockers so of a morning it’s easy to gear up & ski out to get on a lift. I have no complaints about the hotel
Spend the w/e’s in Tokyo and on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning take a bullet train to one of the 100 to 200 ski resorts by bullet train 2 hours outside Tokyo and you will have the place to ourselves
Had many beers in front of the open fire looking out through the big picture windows at acres of untouched powder snow. Yes, you need to book for the restaurants for dinner
There is a short short climb to get on a lift. We had a 3 bed room on the third floor which was extremely spacious. The public areas are spacious and well designed

Their website indicates that there are two ways to get there, a bus from Iiyama Station or a bus from Yudanaka Station
We ate breakfast / dinner at the hotel and told the staff that some of the group were vegetarians, a challenge in Japan generally, and they made sure there was a plate of cooked vegetables for each of them at every meal
What is not obvious until you talk to them that the bus from Iiyama costs about 2700 yen each one way whereas the bus from Yudanaka Station is free, I repeat, the bus from Yudanaka Station to the Ryuoo Ski Park is FREE
There was not a lot of English spoked but the staff on the front desk were very friendly, very helpful and experts in the use of the translator app on the iPad
They then pick you up from the Ryuoo Ski Park information centre in a snow mobile for free. The hotel is a little out of the way and appears to get a few school groups going through but would definitely go back
Another plus point is that they have rooms that can accommodate early check-in and late check-out. If there is one complaint, it is that the water in the large bath was too hot to enter

The location is perfect!! Just at the bus stop. But if you are skiing somewhere at Okushiga, better take the earlier buses. It was so crowded by the time it got to our stop we could not get up
Excellent value; worth considering for a comfy budget stay. located within skiing distance of the Yakebitai/Okushiga areas, ichinose and Tateyama areas (tree skiing). Good size for the tatami rooms
The state of emergency was lifted and touring to Shiga Kogen. I am staying at Shiga Ichii Hotel. Infectious disease control and social distance are also solid
Autumn leaves have begun, and in Ichinuma (lakeside), the autumn leaves are mirrored and the scenery is wonderful
I booked a Western-style room, but for some reason I was assigned a Japanese-style room 😢 But it didn't matter. The cleanliness and facilities were fine. There's a hot spring and a place to store ski equipment
The hotel's location is very convenient; there's a bus stop right outside

The closest thing to a criticism I have is that the bath water is quite hot; I recommend a cool bucket shower before getting in, and maybe a couple of cold ones later
The hotel room was much bigger than expected. The service was excellent and the Japanese breakfast was most tasty
Being so close to the Snow Monkey Park also helped a lot - after spending the day in the cold, it was nice to return to the hotel and warm up
Everything about our stay was perfect. The place was very clean and well maintained, and the location was ideal for visiting the Snow Monkey Park. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, always ready to help
The shuttle service was super convenient, and the location right at the entrance of the Wild Monkey Park is unbeatable. The service was exceptional, and both breakfast and dinner were incredibly generous
Perfect place to stay!

Hotel is very old. Rooms are basic. Shared bathroom is also crowded.
However location is excellent! Directly opposite ski lift. And ski rental can be found within the hotel
A rather dated hotel but very good location and excellent service from the staff. The clean tatami-style rooms are comfortable and has ample space
Located right next to the Ichinose Family Ski Area and local instructors are available for ski and snowboarding classes
Once reserved, they'll deliver your gear to the hotel's basement, which is super convenient. You can change in the drying room, store your belongings, and have your ski equipment looked after
This hotel is right on the slopes! Make sure to book your ski rentals in advance, as you can't rent them on the spot without a reservation

It's not the most central location. For people who would like to cover all the mountains, you can ski from this side all the way to the other end and back
Pros:
- spacious room (a rarity in Japan)
- true ski in and ski out
- breakfast with some variety
- the store on the first floor sells food / snacks / drinks / alcohol of some variety at relatively reasonable prices (will mention this in cons as well)
Cons:
- almost nothing around to eat for dinner except for 1
a store on the first floor that sells bento boxes (if you get there early) or bread or instant noodles and 3
a pizza place not too far in Club Wyndham
- could be a bit cold at night (but you can just pile on duvets)
- relatively small shower room with no shower curtain
others:
- if I think of Shiga Kogen as a strip, Hatsuke (where the hotel is) is pretty much at one end of it
Fantastic hospitality from the staff. They were very helpful in getting us together whenever we needed help. One can ski in and out of the hotel right onto the ski hill
For those who would like to pick specific mountains to ski on, the mountain you like could be quite close or far away from you

Located in the middle of the 9 onsens, I enjoyed my stay
Great location close to all the small public baths. A bit far from the main station but still walkable or reachable by bus. The room is clean and cozy with very old Ryokan vibes
It is located within walking distance of 9 public onsen's (hot springs). It is among Vintage looking streets and buildings. Locals are very warm, friendly and welcoming
Traditional Japanese style restaurants and bar are also within walking distance. Almost all tourists here roam the streets wearing yakuta. It is a great place to experience traditional Japanese culture
Good rooms, futon was better than hotel beds. There's a heated kotatsu, a fridge, and a safe. The internet is very fast, and not limited by a stupid amount like 200mb like done hotels
I was able to stay cheaply in the hot spring town. This was enough for a night without meals, and I was able to visit 9 hot springs in the town

It's located right next to Ichinose Family Ski Resort, so it's easy to walk to the ski resort and ski right to the hotel on your way back
Only complaint was I needed three futon cushions to make a comfortable bed, but no drama as there were several in the closet. And a fridge in the room would have been nice, but realize that is not Japan-style
Very basic, but has everything covered. Only about 60 meters from closest run, and nearly ski in/ski out. The ladies at the front desk were extremely attentive, spoke decent English, and cheerful
When we arrived, we unloaded all our luggage from the trunk into the luggage storage area, and a staff member drove us to the parking lot, where they picked us up after we parked
I found out that by putting water bottles in the space between the double pane windows, they would get extremely cold but not freeze
It has the best selection of restaurants in the area, with four in the hotel. I tried three of them, all excellent meals

I really enjoyed my stay at Shiga Grand Hotel — the location is incredible, right in front of the Ichinose ski area and within easy walking distance to the lifts, the staff were amazing and always supportive, and having both breakfast and dinner included made our ski days so much easier
Overall, what I liked far outweighed what I didn’t, and it’s still a great hotel with excellent service and an unbeatable location
The overall experience was very positive. The room is comfortable and warm, but you have to accept the fact that you are in Japan and it is slightly older style. Nonetheless, very comfortable
I would have to comment upon Aki who is the owner of the establishment. The level of courtesy that she extended us in helping us move from one hotel to another was just exceptional
She could not do enough to look after us
The only downside was my partner’s mattress, which was quite uncomfortable; we didn’t mention it to reception because we were exhausted every night after skiing and snowboarding, but considering the price we paid, we expected a bit more comfort

Our evening meals were stunning. We were so impressed we did not eat anywhere else during our stay. The staff were super friendly and all our needs were met. The ski field was just a short walk down the road
Very large hotel with very few guests, felt a bit post-apocalyptic. On the plus side, meant always having the onsen to yourself! There are hotels closer to the ski slopes, but still only a 5 minute walk
It was ski-in/ski-out most days depending on the snow cover on the side of a road section about 100m. Location was excellent in the centre of the many Shiga Kogen ski fields
The food was delicious, the rooms were clean, and above all, it was a very good hotel where kind people served customers.
Beautiful landscape and flowers

I was there for a ski trip, and the hotel's location was quite convenient for driving
We loved the private onsen which was available for booking and the room was spacious and comfortable. The location was great too and staff were helpful!
The room was very comfortable for a family with a small child! There's a private hot spring for families available by reservation, though the usage time is a bit short, it's still great overall! The food is high-quality, delicious, and varied
It's also possible to extend your stay for 1000 yen per hour, which is super convenient when traveling with a child. The hotel corridors aren't perfectly clean due to age, but the room itself is clean and pleasant
We really enjoyed the ryokan; we stayed for one night. The dinner buffet was particularly great, with crabs, fish, hot pot, beer, and sake. Breakfast was also quite good
There's an onsen, and we booked a 30-minute slot and went right away. I didn't get a chance to visit the public baths

All of them are awesome and there is no need to reserve, we tried all 6 of them + the 9 public baths in Shibu Onsen nearby. The meals are very good, great service and hospitality
The hotel is surrounded by several temples of varying sizes and different springs nestled in the mountains. The water temperatures of these springs vary, with the highest reaching 56°C
We stayed for 2 nights at a room without bath. When we arrived we were a bit concerned because it looks old, but after settling in we found this ryokan to be excellent
Located in the heart of Shibu Onsen, Kokuya is a traditional Japanese inn that has been operating for over 400 years
There are dedicated luggage handlers (three floors in total), creating a perfect setting for a period drama, reminiscent of Yubaba's old house in Spirited Away…
The hotel also offers traditional Japanese kaiseki dinners with over nine dishes
