Reviews
After looking at other recent reviews we noticed the (then slightly smaller) mold problem in this exact room has been reviewed a couple weeks before our stay... we have no idea why they would still rent it out.
A couple of days later we noticed a slight chlorine smell, recognizable as mold-removal chemicals so this is a good sign. The room was also rented out to other guests again...
There are still ongoing renovations throughout the day, if you plan to tour the city during this time, you proplably won't notice. Room 19 is probably still on the todo list of the renovation.
After 19:00 the reception is closed, but you can call a videocall receptionist instead, all of them were friendly and helpful to us.
All in All, after the initial shock we had a very nice stay, but would only revisit when explicitly guaranteed what our room will look like.
Usually, people leave good reviews if asked by the staff and bad ones if they had a negative experience. In my case, I wanted to write this review because of the good impression they have left on me so far.
The service is very polite. When I booked my room, I knew that check-in was at 14:00, so I marked that we would arrive at two. However, we will arrive in Amsterdam earlier than that, which means we would have to walk around with our bags until check-in time. George, the hotel manager, kindly asked us what time we would actually arrive and offered the option to leave our bags with them even earlier than the check-in time and return when the room is ready. That will save us some valuable time and already made a good impression on us, since I haven’t heard of a hotel manager offering this before.
Additionally, it’s my mother’s birthday and the reason we are visiting Amsterdam. I asked if it was possible to buy some balloons for the room to add a little surprise for her. George was very willing to help. They aren’t sure if it's possible, but they will let me know. Regardless of whether that happens or not, I am glad I felt comfortable asking for this small favour.
I spent 700 euros for 4 days. In my mind, worth it, because of the location, quiet neighborhood and very close to the main museums. Until I couldn’t sleep at night at all. The entire night a noise right up my bedroom (that was in the basement), of rolling and banging sounds, not even too loud but definitely loud enough. The entire night, every single night. I had max 3 hour sleep every single night, and they were divided in 15/20 min each session. I couldn’t even properly enjoy the city cuz I was exhausted.
My room was in a VERY good condition (they’re clearly renovating, there was material literally on the middle of the hall for days) but the view of my window?? It was purely trash, rest of construction and the parking space of them.
Besides that, how on earth you’re gonna have a hotel in a city with proper cold weather and not have heated floors?? I literally could not step into the bathroom without feeling pain because of the excruciating cold. It felt like I was stepping outside.
Talking about bathroom, I arrived and had a VERY unpleasant surprise inside the toilet if u know what I mean.
Don’t know who had the brilliant idea of not having staff 24/7. Even hostels have reception 24/7. If you lose your key at night, you’re done cuz you can’t access the hotel without it after a certain time, and there’s no one to let you in. There’s a machine to check in and out (you do it, including your key, self service basically) that does not work 🗣️ and then you need to call a virtual receptionist to assist you but if you have a problem? Your problem, cuz well, they’re virtual and can’t do anything. So it’s basically useless, instead of spending money on that, put someone to do a night shift.
There’s already no Breakfast but not even a fridge in the room? Really?
If I ask to not be disturbed, they leave the new towels on the floor. Towels on the floor.
They clearly had a lobby before, which would give a hotel vibe to it, but they converted into more rooms and now it feels like you’re getting into a hostel for serious adults. The place also has no personality at-all.
I had to book this hotel cuz everywhere else I wanted was occupied. But I would never stay there again.
Mold
Water damage
Paperthin walls (we heard everything our neighbours discussed)
No heat on the first night
No warm water in the shower the second night
The housekeeping replaced only 3 towels out of five, but they took them all.
One of the towels we received at check in had a whole in it.
In their little room book, they say that you can watch netflix on the tv, but the tv is not a smart tv :)
The room we received was quite bad and on booking they show 2 room types under the room we booked. We got the one with blue accents, but it only had one window.
Pros
They really tried to fix the issue regarding the hot water. (Someone came during the rain at 10pm to try and fix it)
They give us late check out
The personnel is really nice and trying their best
Internet - good, we had signal
