False advertising and terrible experience — avoid this hotel!
The Sea Pearl Hotel in Cat Ba was a complete disappointment and nothing like what’s advertised. The photos and description online are totally misleading. There’s a massive construction site next to the building and across the road, completely blocking any beachfront view — all you hear and see is noise, dust and cranes. None of this was mentioned when we booked.
The hotel itself smells bad, everything looks old and poorly maintained, and the pool was closed. Most of the common areas were also shut off — the place feels completely abandoned, like a ghost hotel. Even the room door barely worked — it took us five minutes just to get inside because the electronic lock was faulty. When we went to pay, they mentioned something about the EFTPOS machine and said they preferred cash, which felt unprofessional for a hotel of this supposed standard.
The listing also claimed the hotel offers motorbike rental, but when we asked at reception, the staff simply said “no” and told us to go rent one somewhere in the street.
We were so disappointed that we checked out within 4 hours of checking in, enough time to find a new hotel. When we asked for a refund, the staff processed it immediately without any questions or surprise — which says a lot. We then spent an extra $300 AUD(for a total of 3 nights) to move to another hotel that was beautiful, clean, and worth every cent.
After checking in, we looked at Google reviews and realised the bad ones were hidden among a lot of fake-looking positive ones. I really wish we had filtered by lowest reviews before booking — it would have saved us the hassle.
Do yourself a favour and avoid this place. It’s nothing like the photos and definitely not worth the stress.

Dated and somewhat neglected decor. Pool water quality poor, planks around pool missing. Room bathroom fixtures leaking into floor. Coffee machine rolen, hotel felt deserted.

Nice clean rooms and a functioning bathroom. The minibar is unusually cheap for hotels and it's close to a lot of places to eat. But my room view was quite bad. The restaurant was pretty nice and it's a good option for breakfast. I recommend it for everyone

The bed was comfortable, and the room was clean and quiet. The location was close to food outlets and tour agents.
Very little English spoken by desk staff and no help with tours or information on what to see or how to get around. No map or direction at all. - you are on your own there.

I stayed here for one night as part of a package and I wouldn’t have booked this myself. Having said that, the hotel is centrally located with lots of food options around. I had a triple room for myself so it was huge. Like other reviewers said, the facilities are dated but the staff is helpful. My package included three meals (dinner/bf/lunch) as well and the food was good and with generous portions. The restaurant on the 11th floor has an amazing view over the sea.

The staff was incredible. They ensured we had a booking for our bus the next morning and dropped us off at the bus location after breakfast. Breakfast was quite extravagant with very beautiful views. The roof top pool wasn’t very fancy but had a great view and was everything you could need.

I would not have chosen to stay here. We got set up with this hotel through a tour we booked at our hostel in Hanoi (Nexy). Bed was old and springy, holes in the floor, stains on the wall, the bathroom shower barely drained and would start to flood if you were in there for longer then a few minutes and then stink like sewage - they said they upgraded us for my boyfriends birthday but our view looked at some building and we shared a wall with a service elevator and closet - super noisy. Dinner wasn’t worth it but that’s whatever, we just ended up eating store bought cup of noodles. The maybe one redeeming quality was breakfast - not sure if the hotel/hostel/tour guide are working together but the tour guide that picked us up from said hotel wasn’t the friendliest. The first thing he said to us “I don’t like tourist.” So that was unfortunate. Beautiful island but that’s about it.

It was located in a busy area, so it was convenient to move around, and the room condition was good. Even though it was a very humid day, the bedding was clean and damp, and the room was quiet even though stores were open late at night.
Breakfast should be the same every day, bread, vegetables, rice noodles, fried eggs, fruit... There aren't many types. This is served every day. There isn't a lot of variety of food around, but it's good for the price. Most of them are pubs or seafood restaurants, but the taste is average and strange. I think a two-day stay would be perfect. Mango juice seems to be the best in the Philippines haha.

Could be a nice place, in a good place, with good views yo the bay area... But it becames obsolete and old. It's very sad to be hosted here. All correct but, more or less confortable rooms, aceptable breakfasft, but... If you can choose another place, better for you.
