Hellinis Hotel in Athens

Bad things:
The top sheets on the beds need renewing (there was a lot of old stains and it looked a bit shabby). As well as the shower curtain. We ended up not even using it because the bath/shower is very small and there is a drain in the middle of the bathroom. It said on booking.com that the rooms were renovated. I don't think so. Only the restaurant downstairs looks new, so don't be fooled by the pictures on booking.com. But all in all it still was quite comfortable.
Also, be aware that your room will stink of cigarette smoke, as smoking is allowed in the rooms (luckily not in the restaurant/lobby). It took us some time to air out the room and aircon which reeked of smoke.

Good things:
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The restaurant within the hotel was nice.
The breakfast buffet was warm and fresh. Coffee and juice from the machines. All in all quite nice.
The beds were comfortable. The air con was okay.
Fresh towels were given, beds made and bins changed every day, if you're out of the room.
The location is only 15 to 20 minutes from a beach (Edem) by tram/bus and only 20 to 30 minutes into the centre by tram/bus/metro.
There is a lovely square (Nea Smyrni Square) with playground for kids and  many cafés/restaurants and a tram station, only 10 to 15 minute walk from the hotel (it's like a city centre, it has many different shops and a supermarket as well).

It's worth the money you pay. The hotel is dated and there are deficiencies all around. In one room the fridge did not work and in another the safe didn't work. The street facing rooms can be noisy-- especially if you keep the balcony door open, but there is an A/C unit in the room. Floor surfaces need replacement in and outside the rooms. The rooms are clean and with adequate linens. Friendly service and good breakfast.
