I generally prefer independent hotels over large chains, although I accept that chain hotels usually guarantee a basic standard of cleanliness. Unfortunately, this is a standard that was not met during my recent stay at The Kefalari Suites (Suite 10). I stayed at this property last year and, at that time, gave the room the benefit of the doubt despite a heavily stained carpet. I was informed that the carpet was due to be cleaned, and therefore did not raise the matter further. On my second visit, I arrived at approximately 1:30am, leaving me with no option but to accept the room allocated. Upon entering Suite 10, I was extremely disappointed to find the condition of the room had not only failed to improve, but was wholly unacceptable. The carpet was heavily stained to the extent that I did not feel comfortable walking barefoot. In addition, there was visible mould around the bath and peeling paint on the ceiling. At 8:00am I raised my concerns with reception and requested an alternative room. I was shown Suite 4, which regrettably was in the same condition. When I explained that I did not wish to stay in either room, the response I received was limited to raised eyebrows and the comment that the carpets were “clean but a little stained”. This response was dismissive and failed to address the wider cleanliness issues. Unfortunately, due to my schedule and lack of availability in the area, I had no choice but to remain at the hotel. However, I must be clear: this is not a pleasant hotel to stay in, which is a shame as the property clearly has potential if properly maintained. I am not someone who complains lightly, but after 40 years of business travel, this is without question the worst hotel accommodation I have experienced. I would strongly advise hotel management to urgently review housekeeping standards and room maintenance.

The carpet had black stains everywhere. It looked as though someone had walked on it with mud and had never been cleaned. The windows were not insulated and as a result we were woken throughout the night by cars and garbage removal vans. In 2 of the 6 nights we stayed there, the hot water broke down and we weren’t able to take a shower. The hotel left a note in the room saying they were undergoing minor repairs - this hotel needs a major refurbishment !

Excellent small hotel in one of the most exclusive suburbs in Athens. Comfortable big beds cleaned rooms. Having all the facilities one would need in a modern hotel. We only stayed for a night but would definitely stay longer. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience at the hotel. The carpet had bad stains to the point that we didn’t want to take our shoes off or spend time in the room. The water in the shower not very hot even on hottest setting. Pillows not comfortable. Some of the staff at front desk not pleasant, more of “it is what it is” attitude, vs trying to help. Would not recommend. Area around is quite pleasant though and only 15 min walk to mentor.

Miserable experience.. The floors were filthy and service was not good considering how much we paid. The housekeeper took $300 from us and they failed to care and told us we should have locked our money in the safe. Very difficult to enjoy our trip when this happens. I don’t recommend this place. $250 per night is ridiculous. I wish the owner was able to try and smooth things out with us. Instead of heating there’s nothing they can do…

We loved our stay at Kefalari Suites. The hotel itself is beautiful and rooms are so spacious and luxurious. The staff treated us so well and accommodated our extra requests. The area was perfect with so many dining options and shops less than a 5 minute walk away. We would definitely stay here again!
