The Oswald Grand Hotel in Selva di Val Gardena

Stayed 5 nights and although the hotel an service were adequate, we didn't feel it rated 4 stars. We didn't have full board and didn't eat in the restaurant so we can't comment on the quality of the food but we did have a couple of drinks at the bar. The bar itself is nice, drinks are good, and the staff is very friendly. Breakfast buffet food is very good and they have juicer with fresh fruits and veggies so you can make your own mix. Juice glasses are the small side though so they are easy to overflow. Buffet space is cramped and you will bump into other patrons and vice versa. Always a line at the coffee machine, and when there isn't, it's because the machine is asking to be serviced for some reason. Heated outdoor pool on the roof is stunning and a great place to chill apres ski. Definitley oir favorite part of the hotel. Ski lockers have boot dryers built in, but are very small. They only accomodate 2 pairs of skis and boots. If you have snowboard, you can squeeze in an additional pair of skis, but forget about using the boot dryers. Rooms are clean and modern but they are on the small side so don't expect much extra space when springing for the sky suite Check-in is fast and courteous but watch out for bait and switch with the room. Since the pre-charge your entire stay, there can be little recourse if they give you the wrong room. We booked a sky suite and they placed us in a premier room. Had to go to the front desk and ask to be given the room we booked which required a consult with the manager. Room was also very hot and there didn't seem to be any way to the heat off.. Make sure get room with balcony since you may need to sleep with door open. "Free internet" is in exchange for email and contact info so they can track and market to you. This is a little too much for a 4 star hotel. Name and room number should be all you need. The hotel is about a 7 minute walk for the closest lift so you can either walk it in ski boots or take advantage of the free shuttle service. They will drop you off at any of several lifts in the AM on request. This works well until you need to return to the hotel after your day on the slopes. You can either try to find the one trail that ends across the street (which they explain is easy to find, but not really. It is not marked, and you'll need three days trial and error to figure it out) or call the hotel for that free shuttle service. Don't expect to be picked up though unless you have kids. Pick up is for children only. Being older and not being able to walk long distances in boots, they grudgingly agreed to pick us up once but were told in no uncertain terms by the front desk and the driver who picked us up that this was a one-shot deal and to figure out the trail or hoof it.
