As like everywhere else in Japan, the people are incredibly nice
It was a great experience. Will return one day
The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful (I speak no Japanese except for greetings and “thank you very much”) The meals were fantastic! The spread at breakfast and dinner was really impressive, filled with delicious fish, meats, egg, rice, pickled things, stews/soups and really fresh fruit
We were welcomed with kindness and hospitality. They brought our luggage to the room, provided us with yukatas and offered amazing traditional food. The private baths were the highlight and we will miss them greatly
Highly Recommended for a Traditional Japanese Stay Thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. It was my first experience at a ryokan. Mainly chose this place because it is reasonably priced with private onsen and shower
The ryokan has both public and 3 private onsen. The private onsen goes by a simple manual reservation system by writing your name on the whiteboard outside the onsen if the onsen is not available

We visited in the quiet season but the hotel was lovely and the staff were very friendly & helpful. There's a restaurant at the hotel and it has it's own onsen, which is great. Rooms are Japanese-style & very comfortable
Reception helped us proactively for the very late check-in at 10:30pm. The room fixture and hotel facilities are old but within my expectation in that area and price range. Neat and tidy for the tatami setup
The onsen is big and the hot spring water is good. They just provide you the cold bread for reheat at breakfast. I gave up the breakfast and left
Everyone on staff made us feel welcome from the start. Aziz and both ladies at the front desk were extremely helpful and lovely people. We will always remember them abs their friendliness and how nice our stay was
The property is a little old and it shows in some areas but overall it was a great experience. The staff were all amazing and the bathhouse was excellent. Very short walk to the train and bus station.
A relatively traditional Japanese-style hotel. We had dinner at the izakaya opposite. There are set meals and a la carte options. The breakfast was a bit simple and only had bread, coffee and juice

Yudanaka Tawaraya Ryokan, Yamanouchi1 / 15
9.1
Yamanouchi, 4115 Hirao, 381-0401 Yamanouti, uezd Simotakai, Prefektura Nagano, Yaponiya 🧭 Map
Pool: Pool
All guests get to reserve 30 minutes of private use each evening, which was wonderful, but you can also go back during men's time, women's time, or mixed if you want to enjoy some more
Tawaraya is a very nice Ryokan and Onsen in the small town of Yudanaka. While not very distinctive from the outside, the interior is very quaint
The rooms are traditional Japanese tatami rooms with futons and low tables, and ours had a private western-style toilet attached (with all the Japanese gadgets that are the norm!)
There are both a male and female only indoor onsen where you can shower and bathe from 1600 - 0900 daily. In addition there is a beautiful outdoor onsen surrounded by rocks and a Japanese garden
The temperature of the onsen is perfect. Hot enough to be comfortable, but not too hot so you can't stay in! There are also slightly cooler sections of the pool or areas to sit partly out of the water if desired
Like most onsens, any form of clothing/bathing suit/large towel is not allowed. Yukata, tabi socks and towels for before/after the onsen are provided, as well as a small one to bring into the onsen

The room was very large and comfortable. What made the place great was the ping pong table, mini pool table. Once you understand the onsen process it is pretty easy. Note: restaurant is by reservation only
The room was very comfortable for a family with a small child! There's a private hot spring for families available by reservation, though the usage time is a bit short, it's still great overall! The food is high-quality, delicious, and varied
It's also possible to extend your stay for 1000 yen per hour, which is super convenient when traveling with a child. The hotel corridors aren't perfectly clean due to age, but the room itself is clean and pleasant
We really enjoyed the ryokan; we stayed for one night. The dinner buffet was particularly great, with crabs, fish, hot pot, beer, and sake. Breakfast was also quite good
There's an onsen, and we booked a 30-minute slot and went right away. I didn't get a chance to visit the public baths
Dinner snow crab dinner is worth the price. Also cash only needed do the hotel tax due at arrival

Thank you so much Seongmi and Yoshi for having us and letting us feel so welcomed. This hotel is definitely my recommendation for Yudanaka. The two owners are two amazing person and created a very familiar atmosphere
Yoshi san and Seongmi san are the most helpful and friendly hosts you can wish for. Yoshi san is born and raised in the region and literally knows every corner and can tell you where to go (and where to avoid)
Stayed in the en suite room and it is superb, with a very comfortable mattress and spacious. Highly recommend and cannot wait to be back!
You can tell the owners love and care for the hotel. It is also nice and warm and perfect location to get the bus and visit the snow monkeys. I would recommend it to everyone as it's also a good price for the area
The hotel itself is spotless clean and the breakfast together in the kitchen was perfect start for the day. Try the pudding from the store close by and also coffee from the store don the road if you’re here
The breakfasts were nourishing and tasty, and full of thoughtful touches. The space was beautiful, full of wood, tatami and tasteful lighting. The bed was the most comfortable we've had in all of Japan

When a taxi booking to Shiga Kogen fell through due to heavy snow, the owner personally drove me there, which I deeply appreciated. He also printed out the bus schedule and made sure I knew exactly how to get back
Awesome location for visiting Jigokudani Park (snow monkeys in hot springs) but otherwise isolated. The room was very spacious, especially considering i was a solo traveler
That level of care really stood out. The ryokan is conveniently located near the Snow Monkey Park, making it easy to visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive
I'd been to other food forward ryokans elsewhere before and while they were fancier, the food at Jinpyokaku Honten was better or maybe just more suited to my tastes
Finally, while this is close to shibu onsen, it is not part of it and shibu onsen is about a 30 min walk away and you don't have access to the public baths there (to do the 9 bath crawl)
My husband and I stayed here 4 nights for our honeymoon, and we are so glad we did. The stay includes a private kaiseki dining experience for breakfast and dinner

The closest thing to a criticism I have is that the bath water is quite hot; I recommend a cool bucket shower before getting in, and maybe a couple of cold ones later
The hotel room was much bigger than expected. The service was excellent and the Japanese breakfast was most tasty
Being so close to the Snow Monkey Park also helped a lot - after spending the day in the cold, it was nice to return to the hotel and warm up
The facilities are a bit dated, but considering I've stayed here multiple times across two generations, it maintains a certain standard. Plus, there's a fantastic indoor heated pool. I've stayed here twice already
A beautiful ryokan that offers a respite from the crowds at the monkey pool. The service was flawless, the food was amazing and the onsen a highlight for my partner
Everything about our stay was perfect. The place was very clean and well maintained, and the location was ideal for visiting the Snow Monkey Park. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, always ready to help

Honestly the cold milk really made my day!! 🥰 Air conditioning was very effective considering the size of the room and the breakfast was too much to finish and offered a taste of everything Lastly you are on top of the onsens as soon as you step out and monkey park is a 25 minute walk north but talk with the Owner, she has a link to the Monkey security cameras so can tell you ahead of time if theres...
The Yumoto Ryokan is great for a stop to relax a bit. One gets access to the 9 Onsen in the village and can take a dip in every one, or take a small hike to see the Japanese macaques that like to relax in an Onsen
Worth every penny, beside the awesome amenities I was led to expect from description, the staff was also extremely welcoming and went the extra mile - the proprietess even drove us to the train station in the morning.
The hotel has a private Onsen which is great if you wanna share the experience with a partner and also a public Onsen, which I liked the most from all the public Onsens in the village
Generally, the provided food was delicious and rooms where clean, spacious and quite the experience, with Tatami floors. One really felt like transported back in time and as a traveler in the past
It was really an amazing experience and I would recommend it whole heartly to everyone. Also great price quality ratio
