I visited this ryokan with high expectations, given its rich history and tradition, and I'm so glad to say it met them all. I made some wonderful memories here. While the cleanliness was a slight concern due to the nature of tatami flooring, I was completely satisfied with everything else, from the service and meals to the hot springs!
A very old but beautiful ryokan. The dinners and breakfasts are incredibly filling and varied. The grounds are very atmospheric and full of character. The open-air baths are a must-visit, especially during the momiji (autumn leaves) season.
It was a great experience! Very authentic and impressive.
This was truly a fantastic experience. Everything was better than I'd imagined. I rarely think "I should come back here", but for this place, I'd make a special trip just to come stay again, even if for only one more night.
The best ryokan I have ever visited in Japan. You feel at home. It is located in a picturesque place with its own sakura alley, momiji. There is a bamboo grove. Breakfasts and dinners (kaiseki) are interesting and delicious. You can feel the constant attention of the ryokan staff. The onsens are varied and beautiful, after visiting them, my skin became very smooth. The rooms are historical, large,...
Fabulous stay at this beautiful ryokan. Staff was unfailingly helpful, attentive and kind, even though they spoke little English, and we speak even less Japanese. The meals were amazing and the five onsen were fantastic. Our stay was peaceful and restorative...just what we needed!

The hotel is nice and spacious, and the breakfast is fantastic! 👍 For a Japanese-style breakfast, it's incredibly diverse, offering chicken, fish, eggs, fruits, and pastries, all at a good price. The only downside is that as a tourist destination, there isn't much to see, mainly the unique streetscapes of the onsen town… otherwise, it feels a bit like a large rural area. 😀 The hot springs are amazing...
The hotel is quite old and dated.
It's an old but very nice hotel. The room is in a traditional Japanese style, with yukata, tea set, futons, tatami mats - everything is as it should be! Very clean and cozy, definitely recommend it. It's a pity that you can't visit the onsen if you have a tattoo, but it's okay! There was a magnificent view of the mountains and the village from the window!
rooms were big and spacious
however the aircon was abit noisy and it affected my sleep. Building is also dated and it’s evident.
Onsen are nice and big very spacious. even had outdoor section which was abit small but still okay
The hotel is a bit dated, and its facilities aren't very modern, but it's kept quite clean. It's one of the larger hotels in the area, so expect tour groups to stay here. The breakfast was decent.
Large and a bit dated, but quite clean.

This one should be a solid five. Room/service/view/food everything is perfectly fine!
The check-in experience at this onsen hotel didn't feel like staying in a Japanese onsen. All service staff were foreign talents. The private onsen had a bad odour smell with no ventilation turned on. The overall estate ageing condition. The room lighting was dim. There was no dining ambience in the dining room; instead, it felt like dining in a canteen. The food presentation was not refined, and the...
I stayed here in March for anniversary. The environment of this onsen hotel is soooo great. With water dispenser provided in room. Staff are able to speak English well and communication is not an issue. Highly recommended
It was quiet and peaceful, and all the staff were foreigners, but they were polite and kind.
The food was both delicious and presented well.
However, the rooms were dark and the stairs were steep, so I think it might be difficult for elderly people.
The spaciousness of the room and the comfort of the free-flowing open-air bath were all excellent. The meals were served in a quiet environment and the portions were just right, so I was very satisfied.
Excellent location and services, highly recommend! However there are several areas of improvement, 1) add a clothes rack at the entrance of the house, there is nowhere to hang our clothes on the main floor, 2) add an instruction to operation of the heater, we are not japanese local and spent some time to understand there is a switch on the wall to turn on the gas ! 3) would be better if you can...

The dinner was very unique and special.
All the staff at the hotel were really friendly, theres a public onsen (indoor and rotenba) on lvl 2, and a lvl 6 rooftop footbath. Both days breakfast were delicious. Definitely will revisit the place when i come back to nishiizu.
Bus from shuzenji stops right infront of the hotel, traveling back to main town is convienient too.
The room was spacious and clean, but I was bothered by the smell of meat grilling for dinner in the public bath. Dinner was delicious, but unfortunately, the smell of grilling meat permeated the entire room, and after taking a hot spring bath, my yukata and hair ended up smelling like it. However, I am grateful for the kind and attentive service from all the staff.
Unbelievably great! 👍 I'll definitely come again! 👌
We stayed here for my boyfriend's birthday trip.
He became ill on the way to the hotel, so they quickly changed our dinner to in-room dining.
We also requested a surprise cake, and they took his condition into consideration and served it with breakfast the next morning, which was a great help.
We were truly moved by the staff's courteous and warm service, as well as their attentive attention to detail...
The food was especially good.
The foot bath is in a great location and the prices are reasonable.
There's plenty of parking and the location is great. I'd like to come again.

We chose this destination for our 25th wedding anniversary trip, and we were thoroughly impressed with the excellent service, delicious and well-prepared meals, and the lovely accommodation. The staff were friendly and responsive, the facilities were clean, and it's a wonderfully peaceful place for a relaxing getaway.
It was a wonderful traditional Japanese stay. The rooms were newly renovated and the environment was very quiet. The traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast were both very special. The private bath was a great experience. I recommend that people set aside their pursuit of "newness and modernity" and immerse themselves in traditional Japanese culture for a day; it's a truly relaxing experience.
The hotel was nice. The owner and staff were super friendly. Highlight was the breakfast by the river.
The gurgling stream is so relaxing. If time wasn't a constraint, I'd love to spend the entire afternoon there. The water in the rooms is hot spring water, so it's okay if you can't soak in the hot springs.
A very traditional Japanese hotel with large rooms. The kawabatsu cuisine environment is very unique. The food can be improved. The four private soups are great.
I have to say the service is great! I left my backpack on the bus, and the hotel front desk guy was very enthusiastic to help contact the station to find it. We checked in first, which did not affect our mood. The hotel environment is elegant, and it is really relaxing and comfortable to dine by the river. The breakfast and dinner are full of rituals, and they enthusiastically introduce how to eat...

I stayed here as a solo traveler with no meals included.
The bath was equipped with hot spring water, but the only ventilation was from outside, so insects kept coming in.
However, bathing while basking in the sunlight streaming in from the mountain view was pleasant.

The futon was double-layered and fluffy.

Hotel & room are tidy and clean, staff service is good especially thank you for the professional service of staff girl, she served me very well and cautious
Best authentic Japanese experience! Strongly recommend to book a dinner and a breakfast.
All good but the lift did not work properly
Very nice hotel with great and friendly staff supporting my enquiries and needs. The public-, family booked-, private- hot spring are very fantastic. Enjoyable dinner and breakfast time with my family, wonderful food!!
A very nice Japanese-style private hot spring hotel with a private bath. The hospitality was very thoughtful, the service was polite, and the Japanese food was delicious. Special thanks to waiter Xiao Zhang for his patience and carefulness, who solved many of my problems. Highly recommended! 👏👏👏

I stayed at Sora Shuzenji for two days, and the overall experience truly exceeded my expectations.

We stayed here to celebrate my mother's 88th birthday.
When we arrived, two women were waiting for us and quickly carried our luggage.

A wonderful ryokan, which offered the perfect combination of tranquility, stunning scenery, and impeccable service. Surrounded by breathtaking natural views, it’s an ideal retreat for anyone looking to escape the bustle of daily life. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful.

We liked everything. Our room had just spectacular view on the maples, large balcony, private onsen in the room with the same view. It’s just amazing. Service provided was top tier and the food spread was extremely delicious! The room was clean and the en suite onsen was definitely the cherry on top. Would 100% recommend staying at this place!
The whole place is amazing. The staff was friendly and the food is extraordinarily delicious and fresh. Highly recommend
The hotel staff's service is friendly, attentive, and responsible! It's been a long time since I experienced such service. The sunset view from the room is absolutely beautiful!
Very good private onsen in the room. Nice sea view. Dinner is excellent.
This was one of the highlights of our time in Japan. While the outside of the hotel is quite worn and the rooms could use a face lift, it was very clean and the staff was incredibly welcoming. We loved how kind and thoughtful the staff members were. The sweet hostesses were wonderful with our baby and seemed to genuinely love what they do.
The meals were delicious and we loved being able to have kaiseki...

The full-course meal was truly delicious, and the interior was spotless. I received excellent service. While it's a bit remote since it's in the countryside, if you're looking for a truly peaceful getaway and to experience pristine nature, this is definitely the place to come.

Unexpectedly, at this price point, it comes with two private hot springs, one indoor and one outdoor.

This was a relaxing hotel. Disregard the old photos because this hotel got a renovation (albeit 5 years ago but it’s still looking new). The staff are all very nice, they are 50% Japanese and a 50% mix of foreign staff, so they cater to multiple languages.
The hotel is uphill if you’re coming from the Shuzenji station, you can take a few buses from the station but I enjoyed the 45 minute walk up...
Deco was old but staff were hospitable and helpful. Rooms were clean and comfy but you will see bugs since it's right up against trees. There are two private baths on top of the gender segregated public ones and both are free to book (and a nice lil experience). You can also borrow board games or an SNES to your room for free. Although walkable from Shuzenji Temple it may be hard to get there without...

The people here are pretty nice. I like their buffet. It is too bad that we dont have time to have outdoor hot spring. I will come back here if I have chance.

The hotel room was spacious and had a sea view, but unfortunately the dinner menu was rather disappointing.
WOW. What an amazing hotel. Get the room with the personal onsen and make sure your reservation includes breakfast and dinner for the best experience. The location is serene. The room is clean. The staff is polite and helpful. The FOOD is amazing. The onsen is relaxing. The beach is nearby. Definitely hoping to visit again.
All good. Excellent value for money.
The environment is nice, clean, and hygienic. There's no turndown service. It's right by the sea, so you can go for a walk in the evening. There are quite a few people fishing on the pier. There were a few insects near the hot spring in the room, probably because there's a mountain behind the hotel, but I managed to catch a few bigger ones! 💪 The sunset was beautiful, and lying in bed at night, I could...

It was my first time staying here♪ This time I booked a room with an open-air bath♨ As others have written, even though it has an open-air bath, it's only a semi-open-air bath, and unless you turn on the tap marked "hot spring," the bath will remain empty. (+_+) I didn't use the three private baths in the facility this time, but I was bothered by the fact that they don't offer reservations and are...
Amazing Family run Ryokan with great dinner and breakfast, wallet friendly too.
The room is not big, Japanese style, but very clean. The best thing is the breakfast, dinner and banquet cuisine. Each dish is very delicate, attentive and delicious, exceeding expectations. The soup is a private soup, garden soup, very good 👍
We had a lovely 2-day winter stay here. A great, quiet place to relax. The rooms were nice, futon was comfortable, and it was very quiet at night for sleeping. The evening meal and breakfast was excellent. I loved the ambience of the place at night. There were 3 hot springs that you could use. Just check that nobody is using it, take the correct small wooden block, and sign your room number on the...
This hotel is located in the countryside, and if you are looking for a quiet retreat, definitely consider here. We booked a room with an attached outdoor bath, which is great.
