we had such a quality time at Kokuya, lovely ryokan with a long history but it is very clean and comfortable. Our room is by the river, the sound of stream is so soothing. It's an old but very nice hotel. The room is in a traditional Japanese style, with yukata, tea set, futons, tatami mats - everything is as it should be! Very clean and cozy, definitely recommend it. It was quiet and peaceful, and all the staff were foreigners, but they were polite and kind. The food was both delicious and presented well. However, the rooms were dark and the stairs were steep, so I think it might be difficult for elderly people.

The private hot spring experience is good, and the meals in the morning and evening also give a sense of ritual. It's just that the tatami in the bedroom area does not have floor heating in winter, which makes it a little uncomfortable. All the staff at the hotel were really friendly, theres a public onsen (indoor and rotenba) on lvl 2, and a lvl 6 rooftop footbath. Both days breakfast were delicious. Definitely will revisit the place when i come back to nishiizu. Bus from shuzenji stops right infront of the hotel, traveling back to main town is convienient too.

The room was spacious and clean, but I was bothered by the smell of meat grilling for dinner in the public bath. Dinner was delicious, but unfortunately, the smell of grilling meat permeated the entire room, and after taking a hot spring bath, my yukata and hair ended up smelling like it.
