Booked a family room, the two 1.8-meter beds were very comfortable. It was a sea-view room with a balcony, but the view was just of the pier, so nothing special. Breakfast was decent and met our needs. It's very close to the pier, which is convenient for island hopping. Downstairs, there's a laundry service: 20 MYR for 14kg wash and dry. Service response time was very slow, and the cleaning wasn't thorough; they cleaned the master bedroom but not the secondary one. You can cook in the room, and utensils are provided.

This hotel is super close to Jesselton Point, practically the closest you can get for island hopping tours. While the facilities aren't the newest, I still highly recommend it for families. It offers a living room, two bathrooms, and two bedrooms, which is incredibly convenient for families traveling with both young and old. The rooms are also spacious, offering significantly better value than the Hilton we booked later. It’s perfect for families who spend all day out exploring. The hotel also has all the usual amenities like a restaurant and bar. Overall, it really excels in terms of value for money. To summarize, you get the size of a five-star hotel, four-star beds, three-star rooms, a solid four-star breakfast, a four-star view from the rooftop pool, and unbeatable proximity for island hopping.

Location-wise, it's right on Gaya Street, and Jesselton Point is downstairs, which is super convenient for island hopping. It's just a 2-minute walk away. If you walk straight down the street, you'll find all the popular influencer restaurants (I highly recommend Yuancha Teahouse – it's incredibly delicious with great service, though you might have to queue during peak hours). The hotel's service was also excellent. We booked a two-bedroom suite, which was very spacious and had a sea view – definitely worth it!

The hotel's location is great, and the rooftop infinity pool offers amazing views, perfect for watching the sunset. Breakfast starts at 6:30 AM, which is very convenient for guests who want to go out early or catch an early flight. However, there are two downsides: 1. We had a quadruple room, but were only given two key cards. You need a key card to use the elevator. The front desk said each room only gets two cards, but I think they should provide cards based on the room type and number of guests. 2. For a 4-star hotel, they only provide one large towel per person. How is that even possible?

We also took a firefly tour booked through Trip.com, and our guide was very enthusiastic and dedicated – highly recommended! When we checked out, we also booked a private transfer to the airport. The driver spoke Chinese, which was very helpful, and arrived 10 minutes early. I definitely recommend this as well.

We also visited the wetland park, where we rented rain boots. The last part of the trip involved walking through the wetlands, which was a very unique experience.

Mercure provides an excellent value for money. You could spend double the price in nearby hotels in the same location.

My room was clean with powerful hot shower and great AC. Staff was super friendly and happy to assist at all times. Room cleaning was carried out daily.

The only negative was I did not realise I picked a room facing directly across to a room in another building. So my curtain had to be closed all the time for privacy. My advice is to pick a room with the sea view. It will be worth the extra amount.

Overall, happy with the Mercure Hotel. Fully recommended.

Great stay, especially during the New Year holidays

We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel in Kota Kinabalu. The location is great — close to the ferry terminal and very convenient for getting to the city center. Everything is easily accessible.

The service was very good: the room was cleaned often, everything was clean, well maintained, and all facilities worked perfectly. The room itself is not very big, but it’s very cozy and comfortable. We were lucky to get a sea view, which was a wonderful surprise, as we didn’t expect it.

We stayed during the New Year period, and the hotel organized festive events and delicious buffet dinners. The food was very tasty, and it was clear that the hotel takes pride in its dining.

One of the highlights is the rooftop swimming pool with a beautiful view of both the city and the sea — a perfect place to relax.

Overall, a great experience. We really enjoyed our stay and would happily recommend this hotel.

The location is excellent, within walking distance of malls and restaurants. The room soundproofing is just okay, and there's a rooftop pool. We went for Bak Kut Teh at Sin Kee, McDonald's, and bought souvenirs from Nana House. Also picked up some really delicious and cheap Biphoo Lemon Candies from Watsons in Malaysia.

For a 4-star international chain like Mercure, this hotel was surprisingly old and basic. The room we booked had no view, facing an internal space, and it felt quite dated overall. The bathroom and toilet were very small, and the bathroom door had large gaps around it, which meant the outside area got very wet after showering. There was also no face towel provided, only bath towels.

The room itself looked old, although the bed was clean and comfortable. Soundproofing wasn’t great either, we could clearly hear noise from outside the room.

On the positive side, the staff were generally nice and helpful. And the location was good for taking day tours from the ferry terminal - just a few mins walk. Maybe rooms with views are nicer, but unfortunately ours didn’t meet expectations for a 4-star Mercure.

The rooms were quite clean. We booked a two-night stay in a three-bedroom suite and one night in a two-bedroom suite. The three-bedroom suite had a sewage smell, but the view was nice. The two-bedroom suite's balcony didn't have a sea view, but it didn't have any strange odors and was more comfortable to stay in.

The room and bed were clean and hygienic. The shower had great water flow, which I really loved. The breakfast was delicious. Overall, I was very happy with my stay at this hotel, and I will definitely come back again in the future.
