Triangel Boutique Hotel in Kranjska Gora

We booked to have dinner here after dropping in for coffee and tea during a walk during the day. We looked at the menu and recognised this was a higher end restaurant from the choices, prices and restaurant decor. We had a mixed experience. Most of the other diners were hotel guests eating in. Arriving after dark and rain we found the very poorly lit car park to be near full and a trial to navigate in good shoes given large pot holes full of deep puddles. We were greeted well on our arrival and looked after to a good standard whilst we ordered. It was nice to see an open kitchen close by with the chefs starting to prepare dishes for the diners. We both chose vegetable soup followed by chicken with risotto and seasonal vegetables. The soup turned out to be pumpkin which was thin and rather tasteless to be honest. When asked, we noted this at the end of the course and we’re surprised to be told “yes, it’s soup” with no hint of irony or reflection by our twenty something male server. Obviously, he didn’t expect much from it or perhaps the other two soups that we could have chosen. The main course was much better with some fantastic chicken roulades, nice risotto, good vegetables (in general), puréed carrots and jus. The one exception was the parsnips that were rock hard and almost impossible to cut or eat. I contemplated asking for a steak knife for them but my wife demurred. They didn’t ruin the course but we’re so out of step with the other ingredients as to be surprising for a high end establishment. Again, after being asked at the end of the course, we pointed this out and got the wonderful reply of “yes, I’m told they are [rock hard]”. Again said with no hint of irony or suggestion that the information would be fed back to the chefs or maitre d’. It’s clearly well understood that the chefs serve on this basis regularly. We had a right old laugh after our server had gone (he has a tattoo with three dogs on the back of one of his arms if you ever eat there). Basil Fawlty is alive and kicking out here in Slovenia. We had a nice evening and an un-rushed meal which was very good in parts, but with these two notable exceptions. Also beware of the €5 small bottles of water that you are offered when your server first arrives. D & K
