Hotel: Let's start by saying I didn't stay at the YKD Hotel, which I had booked, because upon check-in, I found out all the rooms were occupied, and the owner moved me 😒to a house across the street by the sea, explaining that it was part of his hotel, like a beach club. In fact, it's a house with three rooms converted into guest rooms. The owners themselves occupy another room. It's small and has no air conditioning, but there's a ceiling fan. The room has two closets, which are unusable because they smelled of mothballs. I didn't even try hanging clothes in them, as the smell would have permeated everything. There are no curtains or drapes on the windows, making it very uncomfortable because you can see everything, and you can't even get dressed or change. Another discomfort was the fact that the owners of the house were living with you, so it was impossible to get into your room unnoticed. In the evening, around 7:30 PM to be exact, they closed the gate. The hotel's advantages: the house (photo attached) is located directly on the ocean shore, and you can hear the waves all the time. The beach it's on seemed to me to be the best for swimming; there are practically no waves. Despite all the downsides, the hosts are pleasant and very responsive. The busy turtle beach is a 5-7-minute walk away. There are cafes within walking distance, but the ones I've chosen for myself were about 15 minutes away in different directions. Now, regarding the country itself, Sri Lanka is very beautiful, with abundant wildlife. I've never seen so many animals there: turtles, chipmunks, crabs, a shark, etc., and all this without leaving the hotel. The Ella excursion to the center of the island was simply amazing: the train, the bridge, and the tea were absolutely heartwarming 🫶🏼 and the safari (Yala Park) was an absolute joy. It was my first time on such an event and I was transported back to my childhood. There are also plenty of surfing schools, all very reasonably priced, making it a great spot for those who enjoy surfing. As for the prices, I wouldn't say they're particularly expensive, but compared to other Asian countries like Thailand or India, it seems more expensive. The average bill at a cafe for one meal and wine is around $15-$40. Excursions to the center of the island range from $100 to $200. And the big downside of the island, which is why I won't set foot in Sri Lanka again, is the unbearable heat🥵. It's not the first time I've been so close to the equator, but here I felt the heat all over my skin. It's generally difficult to be outside in the midday sun, cream doesn't help, I bought lycra, it seems like the sun's rays penetrated even through it 😀

This is the first time I've encountered something like this. Upon checking into the hotel, I discovered that all the rooms were occupied, even though I'd booked a room well in advance. The owner moved me 😒to a house across the street by the sea, explaining that it was part of his hotel, like a beach club (no one asked my opinion on this). In fact, it's a house with three rooms converted into guest rooms. The owners themselves occupy another room. The room is small and doesn't have air conditioning (which I was hoping for, for an extra fee, of course), but there is a ceiling fan, which was sufficient and comfortable. The room also has two closets, unusable because they smelled of mothballs. I didn't even try hanging things in them, as the smell would have permeated everything. Another discomfort was the fact that the owners of the house were living with me, so it was impossible to get into your room unnoticed. In the evening, around 7:30 PM to be exact, they closed the gate. On the plus side, the house (photo attached) is located right on the ocean shore, so you can hear the sound of the waves all the time. The beach it's on seemed to me to be the best for swimming, with virtually no waves. Despite all the downsides, the hosts are pleasant and responsive. The location isn't bad, meaning the beach is nice and not overcrowded, there are sun loungers and umbrellas, and the busy turtle beach is a 5-7-minute walk away. There are cafes within walking distance, but the ones I noticed were about 15 minutes away in different directions. And now why such a low rating? One morning, when I went into the shower, I discovered a large Madagascar cockroach, and besides this creature, other small creatures were also spotted in the room.

I hesitated for a long time to write this review, but a year later, I think it was the hotel that ruined my experience. First off, I didn't stay at the YKD Hotel, which I had booked, because upon check-in, I found out all the rooms were occupied, and the owner moved me to a house across the street by the sea, explaining that it was part of his hotel, like a beach club. In fact, it's a house with three rooms converted into guest rooms. The owners themselves occupy another room. The room is small and doesn't have air conditioning (which I was hoping for, for an extra fee, of course), but there is a ceiling fan. There are also two closets in the room, which are unusable because they smelled of mothballs. I didn't even try hanging things in them, as the smell would have permeated everything. One of the walls, namely in the shower, adjoined the owner's kitchen (shared window), and as a result, one morning when I went into the shower, a huge Madagascar cockroach was found on the wall with the window. I called the owner, and fortunately he got rid of it. Another thing that made me uncomfortable was that the owners of the house lived with me. It was impossible to get into my room unnoticed. In the evening, around 7:30 PM to be exact, they'd close the gate, and every time I went to dinner, they'd ask where I was going. On the plus side, the house (I'll attach a photo) is located right on the ocean shore, and you can hear the sound of the waves all the time. The beach it's on seemed to me to be the best for swimming, with virtually no waves. Despite all the downsides, the owners are pleasant and helpful. The location isn't bad, meaning there's a nice beach with sun loungers and umbrellas. It's a 5-7-minute walk to the busy turtle beach. We liked the hotel. Great location, a nice beach across the street, lots of cafes and restaurants. Very clean, cleaned every day. The rooms vary greatly. Some are small, without air conditioning, but with fans. They're very stuffy. We had a large room on the third floor, with air conditioning and a fan. All the windows in the rooms face noisy streets, but that didn't bother us. The furniture is old, but the mattress and pillows are very comfortable. Our room is new and clean. There are two large towels, which we used as blankets at night. The plumbing worked perfectly. The linens were changed twice over 11 days. Our room even had a mini kitchen with a refrigerator (very small and old). We brought a kettle. There is also a shared kitchen and a large refrigerator on the floor.

We stayed from January 15th to 22nd and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is small and cozy, the owners are friendly, the room was cleaned every day, there's a great clean beach nearby, and there are plenty of cafes and shops within walking distance. There's also a turtle island nearby, where turtles visit every day. 🙂 Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would come back again.

The hotel has a great location. The beach is just across the road. The beach area is separated from the ocean by a coral reef, where excursions from all over the island arrive. The bus station is within walking distance, offering connections in any direction. There's also a Sunday market nearby, where you can buy fruit. The port is nearby, along with a fish market where you can buy seafood and, for a small fee, cook it for yourself. The train station is nearby. The hotel is simple, with a small number of rooms, and we booked with breakfast included. Breakfast was delicious, prepared by the owner herself. The tea was delicious. We ate on the balcony overlooking the ocean. Before leaving, we learned our flight was delayed by 11 hours, and the owner let us stay in our room at no extra charge, for which we are especially grateful. We were given the use of a refrigerator on the third floor, free of charge. There's a clothing store on the ground floor. The rooms have the bare essentials, but the furniture is not new. We rented a dumpster, which we parked in the hotel courtyard, also free of charge.

Would not recommend staying here. We checked around 10am and spent the whole day at the beach. When we came back to our room in the evening we noticed that the bed was infested with bed bugs and bed bug eggs. Showed the owner photos of the bed bugs and asked for our money back however charged us for 1 full night. He offered us a different room however it was also dirty. Pretty horrible experience as we had to find a new hotel at 10pm which was stressful.

Good location - 5 minutes walk from the beach - and really kind and warm service.
This was our first hotel on our first trip to Sri Lanka, and it left a very warm impression. A modest small room for two, a tiny window behind bars and strange bed linen were not its strong point, but we found this place very atmospheric and cozy, with delicious breakfasts and everything we need, close to the beach, but at the same time surrounded by the jungle. On the third floor there is a large veranda and lines for drying clothes, on the first floor there is a shower to rinse off after the sea. The room had a safe, refrigerator, hairdryer and kettle. When it rained, the hosts thoughtfully provided us with umbrellas.
A five minute walk away is a beautiful beach with turtles. Shops, cafes and restaurants are also nearby, especially Red Lobster.
One of the inconveniences may be the railway running under the walls of the hotel, and the walls shake at night and several times a day from passing trains. But for a few days it seemed even romantic to us.
We would return to this hotel again.

The perfect accommodation for a relaxing stay in Hikkaduwa!

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is close to the beautiful beach and centrally located. Restaurants, bars and supermarkets are in the immediate vicinity.

We enjoyed our stay and can highly recommend the hotel.

We had a very large family room on the top floor. It was cool and spacious with very comfy beds, a safe for valuables, kettle cups, glasses and cutlery. Very useful!
It had a large and very effective fan as well as excellent aircon.
Everything was spotlessly clean.
The bathroom was amazing with hot and cold showers, great lighting and beautiful plants!
we had a private balcony with a sea view on the oneside and a shared balcony overlooking the railway tracks on the other. There were lots of fireflies!
the trains to go right past, and are noisy, briefly, but they were no problem to us! we enjoyed watching them!
All the shared areas were covered in plants and beautifully maintained.
Our hosts were really friendly and helpful.
it's 2 -3 minutes walk to one of the little beaches suitable for swimming!

Nice room and good location hotel. The room was clean enough but not perfect. The window overlooked a shared balcony, so for privacy, it had to be kept curtained most of the time. But there is a refrigerator.
There is a train track right next to the hotel and the train can be heard loud enough several times a day.
The hotel has an area with a beach shower, which was great and allowed you not to carry sand from the beach to your room. The breakfasts were good, but not very filling. You could choose what kind of breakfast you will cook the next morning from several options. The hotel also provides clean bottled water for a fee.

We had a fantastic stay here. The location is excellent, it's across the street from the beach but far enough from the main road that it's nice and quiet. The breakfast was really good too. The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. Also the manager is really nice and can arrange anything from tours to taxis. Overall we had a great stay.
