Art Hotel Riposo in Ascona

We recently stayed at Art Hotel Riposo in Ascona, drawn by its glowing reviews and reputation as one of the top boutique hotels in the area. While our stay wasn’t bad, it certainly didn’t live up to the high praise, with much of that down to the service.

To start with the positives: the hotel itself is charming. The property is clean and well-maintained, with fruit trees and vines winding through the courtyard and outer areas. The location is outstanding; central, scenic, and incredibly convenient. We were able to go into town to shop, eat, drink, etc. and return and reset with ease. Additionally, the view from both our room and the rooftop terrace is easily one of the best in Ascona.

Unfortunately, the service left much to be desired. It lacked the warmth and attentiveness you'd expect from a boutique hotel that’s won local accolades. Upon arrival, we were given the bare minimum of information. No orientation, no helpful tips, nothing to make the experience feel personal. We had just come from a boutique hotel where all of the above was done superbly, and then some, which made our entry all the more questionable. For example, we weren’t told about the Friday night jazz event in town until it was too late to book a dinner reservation in the courtyard, something a more proactive staff might have easily flagged. And being chased down for our room key as we were leaving felt unnecessary and awkward, especially given the relaxed atmosphere the hotel seems to strive for.

In short, what the hotel can control (organization, communication, guest experience) it doesn't do especially well. What’s outside of its control (location and views) are what make it shine. It’s perfectly fine, 3.5 stars if I could.

Very friendly staff/management. Great location. Lovely food. Roof top terrace and uniqueness of rooms made it extra special. Would recommend.
