Reviews
Everyone from the guy at reception to the fascinating guy on the bar to the lady who showed me in to breakfast, was friendly.
But even more, the feel of the place was unique and special - not least the views of some fabulous Victorian statues from one of the corridors, which gave it a magical, secret garden-ish flavour.
The world needs more of this, as so many places start to feel like people-processing factories.
The fact that I heard people chatting the moment I went in spoke volumes.
We had a main meal there, which was delicious and our breakfast the next day was just as good.
Everything about our experience was very pleasing and we're planning to come back again soon.
Unfortunately, once we reached our room, it became apparent that the same level of care had not been carried through. Although the room initially looked average, it quickly became clear that it was below expectations. The carpets were stained, the paintwork looked tired, and the bathroom felt grubby, with a stained bath. Most disappointing was the toilet, which wouldn’t flush properly unless the button was held down.
As the hotel is an older building, some noise such as squeaky floorboards and echoes is to be expected. However, we were woken several times by guests returning to their rooms after drunken nights out. The banging, shouting, and antisocial behaviour was the worst part of our stay. Hearing some movement or conversation from neighbouring rooms is understandable, but loud shouting and screaming between midnight and 1am made for an unpleasant night. Initially, I assumed this was a one-off, but after reading other reviews, it seems this has been a recurring issue.
That said, the staff were genuinely lovely and very apologetic when I rang reception. They responded straight away and followed up with a call to check in, which was appreciated.
On a positive note, the bed was comfortable, and as we booked last minute, it was a reasonably priced stay. For those looking for a quick overnight stay in the city, a midweek visit may be a better option.
Was a bit of a confusing walk to the lift in the adjacent building, where room was situated the first time locating room, did also give some direction to other guests who were struggling to find lift.
Rooms & beds were very comfortable, with a spacious bathroom with separate bath & shower & soap & shampoo dispensers.
Did inform front desk on check out that the shower door would not close properly, who made a note of it for maintenance to rectify.
The water pressure in shower was poor, so not much spillage through the non closing door.
Didn’t eat in as meeting friends for food, but did see some of the meals on offer & looked very nice.
I would not hesitate in staying again & hopefully try something from the menu as well.
