Description

Zum Roten Bären in Freiburg im Breisgau is a historic 3-star hotel founded in 1718 and renovated in 1990, recognized as the oldest continuously operating inn in Germany. It offers a range of rooms from Standard Single to Garden Suite, all equipped with heating and WiFi. Guests appreciate the hotel's clean, well-maintained rooms and the professional yet friendly service. The hotel includes amenities like a restaurant, bar, garden, terrace, and free bike rentals. Its breakfast buffet is often praised as generous and delicious, adding to the overall positive experience. While the hotel has charm from its historic roots, some guests note that the interior decor contrasts with the old-world exterior. The absence of air conditioning in summer months and occasional weak WiFi in rooms are mentioned as drawbacks.

Location

Restaurants like Ganter Brauereiausschank and Harmonie Flammkuchenhaus are within 250 meters, providing local dining options outside the hotel’s own restaurant.

Old, historic, so friendly, amazing breakfast, feels so quaint and like home but very professional and very well-run, too. Room was just a little too hot for our liking.

The Roten Bären hotel was perfectly situated in the old city of Freiburg! Decent breakfast buffet and friendly staff. Considered the oldest Inn in Germany. A little bit of a challenge to get to it since it’s in the pedestrian zone but managed.

Overall, positive experience
The hotel was very cute from the street and the staff were excellent. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed on the day we were there, so we didn’t get to try it. We were offered a room upgrade which was a pleasant surprise! The hotel does not have A/C and we were there during July, so it was very hot in the room. We also felt that the decor did not match the old world charm of the hotel’s exterior and lobby. We felt like we stepped from a beautifully historic hotel into an IKEA showroom. Overall, we enjoyed our time in Freiburg and the staff were very friendly and accommodating.

Oldest hotel in Germany!! Almost 800 years old and still going! It has quirks, and is nothing like a Holiday Inn, but that's a GOOD thing. Very clean, very hospitable, very quaint, and exactly in the center of old-town, just footsteps from the ancient main city gate. I loved it, and hope to return someday. Be sure to visit the little ancient basement/cellar museum.

My napkin fall down. I ask the manager another one. When he brought one, told me in a very rude voice "don't let it to the floor again" . I try to reclaim at the complaints book by he refuses to give it.

Not a Bad Place to Stay in Freiburg
Beds we about 8" off the floor which made it difficult to get up.

This historic hotel is ideally situated in the old town in close proximity to all of the historic sites, shops and restaurants. It is close to the city gate and not far from Schlossberg (castle hill). Paid parking is available in a lot within walking distance (tricky to find - use GPS). Our 'standard double room' was clean and very quiet. Breakfast buffet was typical. The reason for the 3 stars is that the hotel lacked charm. I expected more personality from the "oldest hotel in Germany". Also, there is no reception desk per se. Merely a person at a computer at the end of the rather sterile bar on the ground floor. There were no issues checking in or out, however, I did not feel welcomed at any point. I hesitated to engage in any conversation about the hotel or the city sites. I had my own agenda so this wasn't a big deal, but very different from the other hotels across the country. I do recommend the hotel for location and cleanliness.
