Reviews
I had originally booked the hotel sometime in July, the previous month. Before I left for Germany, from the united states, I emailed the hotel to confirm my booking - I was reassured that my hotel room was reserved - Awesome!
When originally creating the booking I entered my credit card information to pre-pay, however a few days before leaving I was supplied another email that had me read a few disclaimers and officially purchase the hotel room in advance
I am 18, from America. This was the first time I had traveled outside the United States by myself - I was not sure what to expect, or how easily I would be able to communicate with staff (despite the few phrases of German I could say/understand). However I arrived to the hotel and was greeted by a man named Christian, he was the staff member who I had been communicating with over email about my booking. He was completely fluent in English and explained to me the door code situation. As it says online, before my arrival I was emailed the outside door code and my room code, so walking in was straightforward and simple.
At first to enter your room, as well as enter the hotel building from the street, you will be required to enter about a ten to twelve digit security code. Upon doing this, it activates your account, to which you can then type in your "comfort code" which is a secondary code that is 4 digits long. You only have to use the long code outside once, and when you first enter your hotel room.
Realistically I had issues with this working a few times when entering the building from the street - but I believe this to be my own error when entering the code, as over two weeks it became second nature.
I arrived at 11:00am when the offices were open; therefore I was able to talk to the front desk - I would advise any other travelers to do the same, as it would be a much better experience.
The office hours of staff are on weekdays until 3:00pm or 15:00pm - and on the weekends the lobby is closed and locked meaning the side door is the only viable entrance. The lobby hours were not inherently an issue, however I was a little bummed that the coffee/espresso machine was unavailable on the weekends.
Additionally, it is a similar disappointment that they do not have breakfast - however it is clearly listed online that they do not offer it, so please do not consider this as a complaint whatsoever, just something to be aware of.
- There are indeed many places to eat, including EDEKA grocery store, located nearby (3 minute walk). I tended to shop at this store most often and utilized my mini-fridge in the room.
Speaking of amenities, lets talk about the rooms!
I rented the single sweet, which included a twin sized bed, a small desk, TV, mini-fridge, safe, private toilet, shower, and sink. There was a small cabinet for storage, and a small bench to sit and put on shoes.
The desk was paired with a standard chair - and the desk has a built-in reading light.
The fridge was relatively small, at most one foot (12 inches) deep, by about two foot (24 inches) tall. I had my water bottle, two cans of sparkling water, one loaf of bread, one small package of lunch meat, one package of cheese, and one stick of butter and that filled the fridge completely.
The shower was hot, and had high pressure. The toilet worked as expected with no functional issues. I appreciated that there were containers of soap and sanitizer located in the bathroom.
The room contained many European standard outlets (about 8 outlets in my room).
The window functioned nicely allowing cool air to enter at night.
Overall I would rate the hotel 5 stars, with a slight gripe in the hours of lobby staff - I wish the lobby was open for slightly longer, but overall no complaints, as everything was clearly outlined online in detail. I felt I was getting a good quality service, and was being taken care of.
I enjoyed my stay, and would recommend!
If I may be really picky, a bottle of sparkling water would have been the icing on the cake.
All in all, a great experience, I'll definitely be back!
When travelling from the UK, be aware that in continental Europe in general they tend to take a less strict approach to safety. Of course it’s a generalisation but I have seen it many times. In this particular hostel, the top bunk was very high and had almost no barrier and the two big windows opened freely and fully (being placed quite low in the wall), which was not ideal considering how high it was and the fact that we were travelling with children. Other than that, well worth recommending.
The only problem was the noise in the morning caused by work being done on the outside of the building, but it was monday, so they're allowed to do their jobs. Just unlucky timing!
