Reviews
Yes the hotel is old-fashioned and needs renovation,, in a middle of a not attractive place, and selling food items at crazy prices, but apart from that it is fine for Greek prices and standards.
Clean pool open from 10 to 18, a breakfast that is decent and a service polite and smiling.
My stay at this hotel was far from enjoyable. The property is located in a neglected and unattractive area, with the nearest reasonably priced supermarket a 40-minute walk away, which is very impractical in the intense Rhodes heat. Nearby, there is only a small kiosk selling alcohol, water, and cigarettes about 5 minutes away. As a result, the hotel and nearby businesses charge inflated prices – for example, 1L of Coca-Cola Zero cost €4, while in the supermarket it’s about €1.50. Local restaurants are also overpriced – I paid €69 for a fish dish and €12.50 for a Greek salad, prices more fitting for a high-end restaurant in a major city.
Although the hotel is close to the sea, the seafront is neglected, littered with trash and abandoned materials, and the beach is rocky and uncomfortable for relaxing. The hotel itself seems not to have been renovated for 30–40 years – the photos on booking sites are misleading. Rooms contain old, damaged furniture, a small TV with only Greek channels, a noisy and barely working air conditioner, and a fridge that doesn’t close properly. Wi-Fi didn’t work on the first floor, and there was no running water in the building for several hours.
At the back of the hotel, there is an abandoned, unfinished bar or entertainment area. The only positive is a clean swimming pool, but it is only open from 10 AM to 6 PM, which is strange given the hot climate. Breakfast is very basic, repetitive, and lacks quality.
The owners are aware of these issues but instead of fixing them, they changed the hotel’s name from Sivila Hotel to Afandou Mare, which appears to be an attempt to escape a bad reputation. This name change also makes it difficult to find the hotel on Google Maps for independent travelers.
In summary, the hotel urgently needs a full renovation, and the prices are unjustified for the standard offered.
And right after i stopped my review, the power went out for a second time
This is easily the worst hotel I've ever visited.
Lets start with the positives:
+ The hotel has free parking, so it's easy to rent a car and leave the hotel
Thats it for the positives, now lets cover the negatives:
- the room was really dirty, odd spots on the mattress and bed covers, the toilet seat was loose, the air dryer didn't work, there was no glasses or cups in the room, the room didn't look anything as advertised.
- the juice machine at the breakfast didn't work properly for the whole week. Some days it just gave water, other days it didn't give anything so the only thing to drink was coffee (luckily we didn't travel with kids)
- the breakfast room is way dirtier than it looks on pictures. Every chair has a thin layer of dirt and if you come half an hour before the breakfast closes, the tables are filled with used dishes.
- the breakfast was really bad, odd pieces of vegetables and dry bread. Some guests brought their own breakfast to the breakfast room after a couple of days (I totally get them). We didn't dare try the lunch or dinner. But according to other guests we talked to, it was bad.
- the room cleaning was always done at odd times, usually around 5pm right when you came back from the beach. They never changes bed covers or towels, just rolled them up.
- no one says hi or good morning, like they don't want you there
- theres not a single decent supermarket within walking distance, bottled water at the hotel was 9eur/6 bottles.
- the last three days there was a sewage smell near the pool, which was noticeable when you opened the door to the room.
Don't stay at Afandou Mare!
Minus 1 star, cause it's too far from the bus stop. But if you are a driver and willing to rent a car being on Rhodes, then it's not a problem for you😊
Avoid
Better off with a 4 star all inclusive
Why?
1) 7 days air-conditioning €49
2) Food all Greek, I had to spend €70 on extra food!
3) Always over crowded, we couldn't even get a sun lounger even though we're staying there half the time.
4) Food tastes awful.
5) I'm a non smoker and the staff smoke outside but directly near the door so smoke comes inside!
6) Food 07:30-09:30am - NO WAY! It's first come first serve, they don't top up.
Worst hotel I've been in my 37 year life.
So €130 is €65 extra each we should of paid extra for a 4 star with no problems.
Avoid, avoid, avoid!
