Lava Hostel in Hafnarfjordur

🌍
Iceland, Hafnarfjordur, Hjallabraut 51
● Center: 1.3 km

Multiple reviews highlight the friendly and helpful staff, with one calling the manager a 'constant ray of sunshine'. Free laundry and showers are rare perks in Reykjavik hostels and were appreciated by several guests. The shared kitchen is well-equipped with fridges, stoves, ovens, and cooking utensils, though it can be crowded at dinner times. Cleanliness and maintenance are generally rated good for the price, with several guests describing the hostel and campsite as clean and well-kept. Food-share shelf and bar add convenience and a communal atmosphere. One guest reported a serious issue with room overbooking and disruptive behavior late at night, resulting in poor sleep and a pending refund. Some guests found the campsite cramped and noted that showers reserved for campers were sometimes used publicly, leading to limited availability. Wi-Fi connectivity issues were mentioned, though staff resolved the problem by directing guests to a working network. Location was criticized by some for being a 45-minute bus ride from downtown Reykjavik, limiting evening activities. Limited space in rooms for luggage was noted, and overall cleanliness could be improved according to one review.

We changed our plans to stay on Reykjanes peninsula in our camper due to high winds the night before our flight home, stayed at lava instead for shelter. Really great campsite, good toilets showers washing machine. Pre booking online advised as it fills up fast. Hostel adjoining had food share facility which was great for the end of our week

Friendly staff, free wifi, kitchen has plenty of cooking ware (but is a bit crowded at dinner time).
Place is clean, for the price amazing. A grocery store is close and there is a fridge you can use when labeling your food. The place has a piano, plenty of tables and chairs and even a few couches. The doors for the rooms are locked with keypads so no key is needed and checkout is very easy.

In the evening, when I entered my room, there was already someone in my bed, and the room was already full. Apparently, everyone had a bed in this room.

Fortunately, there was still a resident who was awake and allowed me to go to his room where a bed was still available. I slept extremely poorly because my belongings were in my room, and I was sleeping in another room. I was afraid all night that someone would kick me out of the bed because a man entered the room around 2:30 AM, woke everyone up, turned on the light, and spoke loudly and aggressively to force a girl who was sleeping in her underwear to get out of the bed that was supposedly his. It was very degrading for her, and no one said anything because he seemed threatening and not at all friendly. I slept extremely poorly, and after explaining my problem to the concierge the next morning, he told me to send an email with my story so that I could get a refund. Someone responded to my email, apologizing for the inconvenience and saying they wanted to investigate the events of the evening and promised me a refund for my one-night stay.

I am still waiting for the refund and the outcome of this investigation…

If you had kept your word, I would have given a good rating because I would have thought that you would take the necessary measures to ensure that such an experience does not happen again at your establishment.

Nice campsite, free shower and laundry. Right next to a park which makes for a nice area to walk around. The actual campsite place was a little small and felt cramped on the Tuesday night that we stayed. The price was 1700ISK/person, more expensive than any of our other campsites but it was the cheapest we could find so close to Reykjavik.

Really nice campsite, clean facilities. It was a little bit strange as it is right by a park and the washrooms reserved for campers are often used as "public" washrooms. The shower wasn't draining the day we stayed there so we weren't able to take showers but the hostel building had some available (which I didn't realize until we were leaving). Overall good experience and would definitely stay again! FREE LAUNDRY (this is rare... very rare in Reykjavik).

Nice flat site with good kitchen available for campers. So far though, the WiFi connects but doesn't work. Although upon showing this to reception, I was connected to a different network that works ?

The hostel is welcoming with good wifi and nice public areas. I camped outside in my bivvy and tarp, the camping area is nice and close by. The hostel is clean and well kept, and the staff are helpful for information about the area and country. The photo attached is a 2 minute walk west, very neat area.

Great affordable hostel in a beautiful city with a very nice host. There is a shared kitchen and a washing machine which is handy. There is also a food-share shelf where you can take leftover food from previous travelers. It was a pleasant indoor stop on our otherwise camping trip.

Alexander, the manager, is incredibly helpful and a constant ray of sunshine in the hostel. The hostel is clean and well kept. Highly recommended staying here.
