Description

Hotel Ranga is a four-star hotel established in 1999 and renovated in 2018, located in Hella, Iceland. It offers a wide spectrum of room types, from economy to luxury suites, many with river, mountain, ocean, or water views, catering to different traveler preferences. The hotel scores highly in cleanliness, amenities, location, and service, each rated 9 out of 10. Guests frequently mention the professional hospitality and attentive staff, highlighting the observatory for star gazing and an aurora wake-up call service for Northern Lights sightings. The on-site restaurant receives consistent praise for its excellent food, including Icelandic specialties like baked fish and deer carpaccio. Facilities include non-smoking rooms, free parking, WiFi, a bar, massage services, billiards, and a games room, making it more than just a place to sleep. Despite some critical reviews about room size and dated bathrooms, many guests appreciate the charming rustic-modern style and the unique experience offered by its remote location.

Location

Hotel Ranga is situated in Hella, Iceland, approximately 93 km from Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV). Its location is noted for offering great views and opportunities to see the Northern Lights, with an aurora alarm to alert guests. Being somewhat remote, the hotel is recommended especially for travelers with a rental car to ease access to southern Iceland's attractions. The hotel is not in a densely populated area, so expect a peaceful atmosphere but limited nearby landmarks. The proximity to natural surroundings is ideal for fishing and star gazing activities hosted on-site.

Tips

  • Renting a car is highly recommended due to the hotel's remote location.
  • Take advantage of the aurora wake-up call to not miss Northern Lights sightings.
  • Consider booking tours like the Golden Circle with the hotel’s recommended guide for a memorable experience.

We loved our stay at Hotel Ranga. Truly a small luxury hotel. Nice comfortable rooms, great serene locations. We loved the observatory for star gazing and also saw a bit of northern lights. What stands out though is their professional hospitality and the service. They are all very willing to help. Very good food. Recommended for a stay if you were traveling like us to or from the east side of Iceland

Not worth it given the price and location.

We stayed in 5 different hotels on our Iceland trip, this one was by far the worst and it was the most expensive. Bed is terrible, room is dated and strange. Manager refused to refund a night after we mistakenly booked an extra night. Paid $500 for nothing, pathetic

There are far better places to stay for less cost

We had such a beautiful stay at Hotel Rangá. It is truly a lovely property — charming, elegant, and absolutely worthy of being called a luxury cabin experience. We enjoyed every moment there.
The reception team was wonderful, especially the young lady who kindly assisted us with all of our questions. She was incredibly helpful and welcoming, which made our stay even more special.
The hotel is kept very clean and well maintained, and you can truly feel the attention to detail throughout the property. The restaurant was excellent — the food was delicious and all the staff members were very friendly and attentive.
The astronomer was very kind and knowledgeable, making the stargazing experience even more memorable. Housekeeping also did a fantastic job.
We were especially excited that the Northern Lights wake-up call actually worked — the aurora alarm rang, and we were able to see beautiful Northern Lights. It was magical. The hotel also surprised us with very lovely amenities, and we left feeling truly happy and grateful.
Overall, it was a wonderful stay. Thank you so much for such a memorable experience.
Suggestion:
The only small suggestion would be regarding the outdoor hot tubs — we felt the temperature could be a bit warmer, as they felt slightly cold.
Tip for first-time visitors:
If this is your first time visiting, I strongly recommend renting a car, as the hotel is quite remote and having your own transportation makes the journey much easier.

We didn’t stayed in the hotel, but we stopped to have lunch, the food was amazing, deer carpaccio and the fish of the day (cod) was really tasty. Also the ice cream

The staff was very kind and ready to help.

And the place has great views, the bear in the main entrance was spectacular.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and had a lovely experience. The first night we had the pleasure of attending the star gazing in the observatory with an absolutely wonderful astronomer. He was so knowledgeable, and seeing the stars that clearly was beautiful. We did see some of the northern lights that night as well, and the hotel provided hot chocolate for everyone staying up late to see it. The best part of our trip however came from the Golden Circle tour with Aron. He was remarkable! If you have the opportunity to book a tour with him, I strongly recommend it. Thank you Aron for everything!

Amazing rooms, even better service and excellent restaurant. The service stands out from the front desk, to housekeeping to restaurant.
