Absolutely Disgraceful – Avoid at All Costs!

I had the serious misfortune of staying at the Shalom Hotel in Bayit Vagan, Jerusalem, and I can confidently say it was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had.

First off, the hotel is practically a construction site. The majority of the building is under heavy renovation — noisy, dusty, and chaotic — yet they somehow think it’s acceptable to keep a few floors open to guests without so much as a warning or apology. No disclosure was made about the state of the property when booking or checking in.

The reception staff were beyond rude. Not only did they lack any basic manners or professionalism, they outright ignored reasonable questions and responded with hostility and arrogance. I’ve never encountered such an appalling lack of customer service. To make matters worse, the swimming pool — a major selling point — was completely out of service, and of course, this was never mentioned until we asked.

And don’t even get me started on the so-called “breakfast” that they have the nerve to charge extra for. In a country known for its generous and fresh Israeli hotel breakfasts, this place serves a sad, miserable plate of two lukewarm scrambled eggs and what looked and tasted like a leftover, possibly spoiled, potato. No buffet. No variety. No pride or care in what they’re serving. It was insulting.

This hotel is an embarrassment, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone — not even for a night. They should be ashamed of the current state of their operations. Save yourself the stress, money, and disappointment — book literally anywhere else.

The staff was very courteous, room was impeccable. The rooms are very updated with the nicest modern interior design. But the best was the continental breakfast and the food. Wow we had breakfast like kings. A special thanks to Meir for making our stay pleasant.

The property was under repair/updating. This created a lot of dust in the elevators. The hotel was mostly empty. Breakfast on some days was served downstairs. You were just given a plate. It was nice but not necessarily what we wanted. The waiter also had to go upstairs to get it. He was great and as accommodating as he could be.

A mid-range, somewhat tired hotel. The rooms towards the pool are somewhat larger that the ones to the back. Of course, the higher rooms have better views, we stayed at the 4th floor towards the back, facing the roof of the parking and facing the stairs leading upward to the next street. The hotel was built 1972, and it shows, e.g. stained carpet in the hallway, non-functional safe in the room and a tired bathroom. But it‘s clean and maintenance (bar the safe) seems to be good: other hotels this age are in worse shape. The elevator situation mentioned in other posts didn‘t bother us (it seems like we hit days of low occupancy) and we took the (small) staircase during shabbes anyway. The hotel announced new elevators in the lobby to be coming. We didn‘t eat at the hotel, so cannot comment on that. We did turn on the A/C briefly, but didn‘t like the smell and opened the window instead.
