B&B Alle Terme in Viterbo

The B&B is located in a quiet area, surrounded by greenery. The rooms are clean and well-appointed. The owners are friendly and accommodating, and the hospitality is almost family-like. The value for money is good. We stopped here to break up a long journey and were very satisfied. The value for money is good.

I chose the B&B because I could see that it is within walking distance from the Bagni dei Papi and also from the open, natural, free ancient hot spring pools -- and a local trattoria. That said, there is nothing else around except for a large military base with constant helicopter activity. Sort of a strange combination, but it works well if you want to visit the hot springs in Viterbo. I took the train from Rome to Viterbo and then a taxi to the B&B, but there is a local bus (#2) that goes there also, and when I left, the housekeeper was very kind and gave me a ride to the train station.

There is no grocery store nearby, but there is a simple, good local bar/trattoria that opens in the morning for coffee and at lunch and dinner most nights.

Most of all—the hot springs! The springs -- I Bagni di Viterbo -- are located about 700m up the road and come out of the ground at a very high temperature into open natural pools -- "pozzi" -- that are maintained by local aficionados. In my experience, some hot springs are simply not that hot, but these are, and there are various pools of different temperatures. Quite a nice experience, and fun to meet the locals there as well. I also went to the Terme dei Papi and I would say that the "grotta naturale" was worth a visit, but the overall experience is very sanitized and medical/industrial. Overall, I preferred the open natural pools, but they made a nice combination and contrast.

Breakfast was typical basic Italian one- or two-star breakfast -- supermarket yoghurt, Nutella, packaged "brioche", corn flakes, coffee machine, plus some fruit and homemade fruit tart. Adequate but very basic, which matched with my expectations for a simple place like this. The location is a bit isolated and so fresh items would be difficult.

Enchanting place, a few meters from the Terme dei Papi. Mrs Nazarena is really very kind. Impeccable service.

Excellent location, the two ladies welcomed us and looked after us as if we were at home! Thanks Dolores and Nazzarena. We will definitely meet again!
