Reviews
The lobby area feels like stepping into the living room of someone's home, with slippers and guests shoes neatly arranged in the genkan, nice comfortable sofas, shelves of books, warm wooden tone. Kiku's mum checked us in that night, she was very friendly! She told us that there were other Malaysian guests who checked in that day too, what a surprise haha.
Coming from our tiny Osaka hotel, we find our room to be spacious, it has a tea drinking area, 2 double beds, modern toilet and bath and a nice view of the sea. The hotel was also decked out in tatami mats, so comfortable to lie on after a long day of exploring Ise Jingu.
The location of Kaigetsu is amazing, only a short walk away from Toba station, Toba Castle, Mikimoto Pearl Island, historical sites like Irako Seihaku's house and the beautiful monument of Prof. Kadono at the Toba Tourist centre. There are also many restaurants and shops nearby within walking distance.
At checkout obachan even gave us onigiri! ごちそうさまでした! お祖母ちゃんお元気で We sat at Shiroyama Park bench overlooking the sea and islands, with ships and trains passing by, and the Toba castle ruins behind us, Toba is truly amazing! With the warmth of Japanese countryside hospitality we departed Toba on the Mijumaru Liner with heavy hearts and a pledge to return.
If you stay in Toba for one night, I highly recommend staying at Kaigetsu!
The key location is very good, very close to the station, and opposite is Pearl Island, which can be reached on foot. It is a B&B that is higher than expected.
Most of all, the hospitality of our lady host was impeccable. Breakfast was delicious and she made onigri for our lunch when we left the inn.
Will recommend this quaint inn to our friends in Sg!
Beautiful and traditional experience on our journey. We were so surprised about the ambient, the style, the spacious and comfortable rooms, the bath, the traditional breakfast and the lovely staff members.
As this is a family-run inn, it has a very homely feel, rather than professional one, so it felt like I was staying at my grandmother’s house rather than a hotel 😅. Thus, this is a great place to experience a traditional Japanese inn and their hospitality. If you can speak a little Japanese, this is a good place to interact with the landlady and the other locals as well. I also ordered breakfast on the last day and it was delicious.
When I stayed there, the old landlady seemed to be the only staff I saw. She is incredibly nice and friendly, and will greet and chat with guests as they enter and leave the inn. I wasn’t sure if there was anyone helping her out, so I tried to keep my room as clean as possible when I stayed. I even received some onigiri from her when I checked out, which I ate while on the train to Nagoya and it tasted delicious. I will definitely stay at Kaigetsu if I ever come back to Mie prefecture again, and I hope the old landlady continues to live a long and happy life 😊
