Reviews
After wandering back and forth about 50 meters, I finally found it.
It wasn't a Japanese-style entrance, but a modern one.
Ryokan U had a small rooftop with a mountain and ocean view, but it was opaque, so I couldn't see it while sitting.
The open-air bath was so cold that I had to use the light to shower.
The large public bath on the basement level was much better. The special kaiseki dinner was light and healthy.
The meal took about an hour and 10 minutes. It served all kinds of food, including land, sea, and air. It was my first time trying pork shabu-shabu, and it was surprisingly delicious, even with a raw egg.
The hot spring water felt a little lacking compared to the Kinosaki Onsen I visited before, but the hot spring water was fine.
P.S. Restaurants around the hotel close early so go to dinner around 5-6pm. Later than that, it will not be open. There’s two convenience stores within 10 minutes distance however I’m not sure if they were 24/7.
The owner and the staff are attentive to the service
Even though it was already 9pm when we arrived, the owner explained the room and facilities in detail.
Although we don't speak Japanese, the service staff kept smiling and tried their best to communicate, showing professionalism and courtesy.
facility
The hotel is exquisite. Although the place is small, it is very convenient
Especially suitable for indoor walking in cold weather
The bath facilities in the basement are relatively simple and the water temperature is relatively high, but overall it is clean and comfortable.
I especially like their pillows and coral fleece felt. They are very comfortable.
food
The food variety is very rich. Although the taste may not be the best, it is definitely a very good experience. You can enjoy many different ingredients and cooking methods in one meal.
Place
It is convenient to drive or take public transportation near the Iron Wheel Scenic Spot and Hell Hot Springs.

Kunisakiso is a ryokan with a refined charm that allows you to fully experience Japanese tradition. Below is a review that summarizes the touching moments I personally experienced.
1. The kindness and attentive service of the staff
One of the biggest charms of Kunisakiso is the kindness of the staff. From check-in to check-out, the meticulous service and smiles that greeted me were impressive, and I was able to stay comfortably throughout my stay.
2. Excellent kaiseki cuisine
The kaiseki set meal provided at 8,000 yen per person was more than worth it.
- 5 kinds of appetizers: I could feel the variety of flavors and the delicacy of Japanese tradition.
- First main dish: Fresh sashimi was served in a wooden bowl shaped like a panokseon, which was visually stunning.
- Second main dish: High-quality seafood and sweet potatoes were served in a basket, creating a harmony of warmth and luxury. -Sukiyaki: With its soft and rich flavor, I was able to taste the essence of Japanese cuisine.
-Fried food: Three kinds of fried food were provided, and among them, the pufferfish fried food was by far the best. The texture was very soft like the texture of chicken leg meat.
-Dessert black sesame pudding: With a unique texture and taste reminiscent of Hershey's Cookies and Cream, I was able to finish the meal perfectly.
-In addition, there were various traditional Japanese high-class dishes in the course.
3. Various hot spring experiences
Kunisakiso's hot spring facilities consist of a family bath, a rooftop private hot spring, and a large bath, each offering different charms.
Family bath: An open-air bath made of wood located outside the ryokan, surrounded by walls on all sides, but with an open ceiling, allowing you to feel the natural air.
Rooftop private hot spring: A space that offers a unique and special experience, which I was able to use privately for 50 minutes after making a reservation. Thanks to the limited facilities, I was able to enjoy private time.
Bath: A traditional Japanese public bath style, where you can soak your body leisurely.
4. Breakfast
Breakfast also had a wide variety of traditional Japanese meals, and it was the first time I had such a full breakfast. In particular, the taste of the cube-shaped cut squid was unparalleled.
5. View
The view from Kunisaki-sou was very satisfying. The amount of steam that could be seen outside the window was so great that I thought each house had a steam locomotive. Also, you can always see a large amount of hot spring steam coming out of the drain outside the ryokan.
Overall evaluation
Kunisaki-sou is the best choice for those who want to experience the essence of traditional Japanese culture. The food, hot springs, and service all work in perfect harmony to create unforgettable travel memories. This is a ryokan in Beppu that I definitely want to visit again.
