Reviews
The room is cooled via central AC, which normally isn't a problem. However, we can only set the fan speed but not the temperature. That is potentially a problem, more so because the windows are locked and can't be opened. When we went to bed on a early-Nov Autumn night, the room felt a tad warm. By morning though, the blanket was up to our neck. So this time we slept happily ever after.
Frankly I would have booked elsewhere if I'd known about the room AC. But then I wouldn't get to experience the wonderful side of Hotel Leon.
There's free parking on the hotel lot. But it was full when we arrived. The male front desk staff who checked us in helpfully gave us direction to the nearest (and cheapest) overnight parking. We found parking for 500¥. Every hotel staff we met or interacted with were personable and professional. It made a positive difference to our impression of the establishment.
Our double non-smoking room was small but it was adequate for the two of us. Water pressure and hot water temperature was great, which made wifey happy. Each person gets two pillows, which helped us sleep well on the oddly thin spring mattress.
A big selection of amenities and toiletries are self serviced at the lobby. There's even a shampoo bar. On arrival all guests are treated to a self service welcome drinks (fizzy & hot beverages). There are massage chairs on level 2, which was also where the laundry washers and ice maker are found.
Buffet breakfast was another highlight of our stay. It wasn't a comprehensive spread but wifey says she enjoyed the food because there's a home cooked flavor. As many had commented, there's unagi rice which was a treat.
Hotel Leon may be a small hotel but it punches above it's weight. On account of our good experience, I would recommend this hotel.
I will definitely come back again when traveling Shizuoka.
All of the staff I interacted with were very professional and helpful.
The communal areas were well furnished and pleasant, as were the rooms. The whole place was very clean and comfortable.
However I had 2 issues that stopped me from sleeping well, the first was that built into the bed is a clock, I could find no way to turn this off so the room glowed all night unless I propped a pillow over the display.
Secondly, the room window could not be opened and the air con was the style where the temperature is controlled by the hotel and the user simply puts low, mid or high on the dial.
Despite being negative temperatures outside the room itself was stuffy and far too warm, without the ability to open the window even a crack and with the aircon off it was still too stuffy and hot to sleep well.
I stayed here 3 nights and each night my sleep was broken and unsatisfying for these reasons.
I also had an issue with the bathroom, the showerhead is obviously a new model which I appreciate, however the angle of this shower head means that when showering the spray hits the rim of the bath directly, there is no way to change the angle other than removing the showerhead or pointing it at the wall. this results in the water pooling over the side of the bathtub rim and onto the floor if you do not block 100% of the spray with your body. Over the three days I managed to reduce the flood each time but it was still a frustrating affair and I was glad the shower itself was in a wetroom.
Finally I had an issue that will likely be only an issue for a tiny amount of travellers. Due to a medical condition I need to carry medication with me as I travel, this medication needs to be kept at low temperatures in order to remain viable, if it is left at room temperature it will denature and become unusable, as it is prescription and expensive as well as vital to my health I am quite concerned about keeping it at the right temperature and always book hotels with a fridge.
The issue came when the cleaner turned off the fridge whilst I was out, something that has never happened in over a year of travelling Japan and staying in similar hotels. I did not notice this until the following morning meaning the fridge was off for almost 24 hours and had I been staying another day and not noticed again my medication could have been lost from this action.
I do not believe that hotel staff should turn off the fridge and even if they do should check it is empty first.
It is for the reasons of poor sleep, frustration while washing and this personal incident with my medication that I would not go back to Hotel Leon or be able to recommend it despite all the positives I feel about the staff, location, price and comfort.
