Cleanliness: Very good.

Service: Excellent. I didn't encounter any rude or discriminatory behavior from the front desk staff or the doorman.

Facilities: Honestly, I felt they weren't great, even though the hotel has a distinct Nanyang style throughout. 1) The hallways at night were genuinely a bit spooky. 2) The room layout in the Victory Wing is really odd; two rooms facing each other, and you have to walk deep into the hallway to open the door? 3) The bathroom had too many mirrors. Plus, as soon as you open the bathroom door, there's a bathtub, and the bottom of the tub is black and right next to a huge mirror... It was fine during the day, but at night and in the middle of the night, it was really hard to deal with. 4) Some of the paintings in the hallway were also just... hard to describe. I didn't think it looked bad when I saw the photos before booking, but staying here, I really struggled to like it.

Location: City center, very convenient for visiting attractions.

1. The bathtub pipe burst at night, flooding the entire bathroom. My slippers were practically floating, as you can see in the video screenshots. There was no apology and no compensation. We were moved to a new room near the road, which was very noisy due to motorcycles at night.
2. During my one-night stay, the room key cards failed twice. The first time, it worked for the elevator but couldn't open the room door. The second time, it didn't even work for the elevator. When I went to the front desk, they claimed it was a power-on card, which is complete nonsense. Is the room key card pictured on it fake then?
3. There were bugs in the breakfast restaurant. When I checked out, I gave feedback to the front desk about my stay, and their 'compensation' was to offer me another meal in the buggy restaurant. I was speechless.

The room was very spacious and clean, and the hotel had a lot of historical charm. However, be careful not to choose a room with a Georgetown view, as there's no scenery at all. A sea view, on the other hand, would be fantastic.

The hotel's overall environment is great, with a beautiful pool, architecture, and coastline. It's not misleading photos, thankfully!✌️

I booked a night in the Victory Wing and specifically emailed the hotel to request a non-corner room. However, upon check-in, I was still assigned a corner room! The front desk service was excellent though 😅, and they helped me switch rooms.

But the Heritage Wing felt a bit eerie 😅. For those staying there, the fridge and cabinets occasionally made noises at night! It was quite spooky, I hope it was just due to old furniture.

A truly wonderful stay at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang.

What stood out to me most is the hotel’s timeless aesthetic. It’s not trying to be “Instagrammable” — instead, it leans into classic elegance, which makes the experience feel calm, refined, and genuinely relaxing.

The pool area is especially peaceful — perfect for slowing down and unwinding. Breakfasts were consistently good, with a pleasant atmosphere that matches the overall charm of the hotel.

I also really appreciated the thoughtful service. In the afternoon, staff would check in on the room, and in the evening they even offered additional water after check-in — small details that make a big difference. I also noticed how warmly they celebrated a guest’s birthday during breakfast, which added to the feeling of genuine hospitality.

Overall, a very pleasant experience with a strong sense of care and tradition. Would gladly return.

Immerse yourself in the century-old Nanyang colonial charm. The rooms are spacious, featuring vintage teak furniture, brass light fixtures, and silk furnishings that evoke classic English elegance. The floor-to-ceiling windows provide excellent natural light, and many rooms have balconies offering views of the Malacca Strait or lush gardens, bringing the sea breeze and scenery right to your doorstep. The twin beds are comfortable, and the bathroom has a wet/dry separation with a double vanity. The vintage bathtub paired with modern amenities speaks to the superior quality. The Heritage Wing offers a full suite of perks: daily complimentary afternoon tea, evening happy hour with drinks and snacks, free-flowing mini-bar, and a welcome bottle of wine, all delivered with thoughtful and attentive service. The public areas retain the original colonial architecture, with atmospheric corridors, gardens, and a coastal boardwalk—every step reveals a scene steeped in history. The only minor drawback is the age of the building, which occasionally has a faint old smell that dissipates quickly with ventilation. Overall, it perfectly blends vintage luxury with comfort, making it an ideal choice for a leisurely trip to Penang to experience its rich historical heritage.

I feel this is the best hotel in Penang, and even in all of Malaysia. The entire hotel has a European design. We stayed in the new building, and all the facilities and room amenities were brand new. The room was spacious, and the bathroom, in particular, was the largest of all the hotels we've stayed in during this trip to Malaysia. I absolutely loved the balcony, with its pure French black and white style. Sitting there, sipping coffee and enjoying the sea view, while feeling the warm ocean breeze – it was simply delightful! 👍 The restaurant offered a wide variety of dishes, and the ingredients were excellent. The waitstaff were all very attentive. I really liked the pool on the sixth floor; in the afternoon, it's perfectly shaded from the sun, making it easy to doze off on a lounge chair in the warm breeze. 😃 The hotel's location is superb. It's within walking distance to the old town, the old city hall, and the church. For the first time, I saw several street food stalls that had received Michelin recognition – the food was absolutely delicious!

My recent stay at the Eastern Oriental Hotel Penang was truly delightful. The colonial charm of the hotel is beautifully preserved, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. The service provided by the staff was exceptionally attentive and courteous throughout my visit. I particularly enjoyed the exquisite dining options available, each meal a memorable experience. Overall, my time at the Eastern Oriental was incredibly relaxing and luxurious.

The hotel is truly beautiful, like a small museum itself. Waking up to a sea view every day is absolutely stunning. I'll definitely stay at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel again on my next trip to Penang. The breakfast at the Heritage Wing is also excellent, all made-to-order from a à la carte menu.

This heritage hotel truly lives up to its reputation and added so much charm to our Penang trip. The service was impeccable; staying in the Heritage Wing meant complimentary afternoon tea daily and a free happy hour with snacks and various alcoholic beverages – truly amazing value! The pool is absolutely stunning, and our room was incredibly beautiful with unbeatable sea views. It’s apparently the only hotel in George Town with sea-facing rooms, and it was wonderfully cool in the mornings and evenings. The international breakfast offered a wide variety of options, though the dishes were the same every day, which could be improved upon.

Great hawker centre. Food here are nice but not as great. There's a singer here, funny, and until late 2AM. Overall experience is very relaxing but it's hot in the early evening. Prices of the food here are reasonable.

Pay no attention to the "negative-nellies" on here. Take your time and search out the food you fancy and you will enjoy. New Lane hawker centre is no longer as good as it used to be.It does have a couple of gems, but unless you like long queues for "trending" outlets, youll find Red Garden is just as good or better with the added bonus of some good local entertainment.
Georgetown at its touristy best. Good fun entertainment, great selection of foods and drinks. Local families come here for a wonderful nights entertainment and eating. The kids fall asleep at the table whilst the oldies enjoy themselves. Love it.
