Weisses Rössli in Leukerbad

In 30 years of traveling as a student and as an adult, never have i been so disappointed in a hotel stay. TLDR: No heat in October, no breakfast, water stains on the walls of the room, and nobody from the hotel showed up until we were ready to check out and they wanted the money!!

Before I begin my rant, it should be said that the hotel is charming from the outside and has lovely views.

Arrival: We were to be arriving late so i tried calling multiple numbers and after many atempts at several different numbers, I finally got a reply from a gentleman who did not speak any French and only broken English. I managed to communicate that we would be late and received some assurance that there would be someone there to welcome us. When we go there, nobody was around but there was a note and two room keys. It took is a while to find our rooms, which were less than impressive, though we could not tell because the lighting was terrible and we were preoccupied trying to get the heating on.

Breakfast: In the morning we went down for breakfast, which my confirmation email said was included, and could not find anyone. Walking into the lobby in the morning felt like walking into a Chinese tea house selling a bizarre assortment of trinkets and tea. There was a breakfast setup in the corner and a coffee machine behind the bar, but nobody around. When i finally reached someone, I was told that breakfast was not included (not what I have in writing!) and that we could pay for our breakfast at the hotel across the way (at Hotel Echer—highly recommended!)

Rooms: Let me start by stating that there was no heating on in the building, and everything was in low-season mode. We eventually found some plug-in heaters in a hallway and brought them into our rooms. This worked, but it is not what I expect when paying CHF 290 per night! We could also see that there was water damage and damp in the children's room, again, not OK.

Service: I don't even know what to say here. There actually was no service. We did not see anyone until Sunday morning when we went to check out, when the owners sent their poor daughter to collect our payment. We eventually managed to get a small discount that partially covered the cost of our nice breakfast across the way, but the token gesture was too little too late.

I expect much more than a dingy ghost hotel when paying going rates, no matter what the season!

What a huge disappointment: we used to come here at least once or twice a year to enjoy their Fondue Bourguignonne with Horse meat and Bacchus style ... The new owners are nice people, but only speak English (!) and think we need another Asian restaurant. We don't!!!
