Description

Thermal Hotels & Walliser Alpentherme, established in 1625 and renovated in 2002, is a three-star hotel located in the heart of Leukerbad. The property comprises three buildings with a total of 135 rooms, including a variety of room types such as Maison Blanche Single room, De France Family Double room, and Large Gemmi King Grand Bain Double Suite. Guests have direct access to a thermal center featuring indoor and outdoor pools, a unique Yin-Yang shaped pool with varied water temperatures, Roman-Irish baths, and spa treatments like soap brush massages. The hotel also offers extensive conference facilities with seven rooms, two tennis courts, and sports amenities including a fitness center and sauna. Dining options include two restaurants, a bar, and a patisserie. Despite its rich heritage and extensive facilities, recent guest reviews indicate the hotel is aging and in need of renovation, with concerns about maintenance issues and service inconsistencies. Still, the location and thermal amenities remain strong draws for visitors.

Location

Thermal Hotels & Walliser Alpentherme is situated centrally in Leukerbad, Switzerland, at Dorfplatz 1. The hotel is conveniently located just 200 meters from the local ski lift, making it accessible for winter sports enthusiasts. It lies approximately 117 km from Geneva Airport, 190 km from Geneva city center, 196 km from Milan Airport, and 230 km from Zurich Airport. Nearby dining includes Restaurant Pizzeria Choucas and Choucalino Kid's Club both about 228 meters away, and Schweizerstübli & Crazy Bar at 375 meters. The hotel’s connection to the thermal baths is direct via underground passages, allowing guests to reach the Alpentherme thermal center comfortably in their bathrobes.

Tips

  • If you plan to use the thermal baths, take advantage of the underground tunnels connecting the hotel to the spa to avoid walking outside.

The thermal hotel is closed. We were put up in the hotel across the street, and breakfast was also served there. The room was very old, with mold on the shower stall, rust on the radiators, and a smell of smoke. At breakfast, there were no clean dishes left at 8:30 a.m.; the dishes had simply been rinsed before being served. The orange juice was fizzy, the cornflakes were rancid, and the service was completely unclean. It was a disaster. We had to go somewhere else for breakfast.

Need total renovation (hotel & thermal bad)

The hotel is deteriorating, poorly maintained, with visible damage. It's old and lacks the quality of service we've come to expect. It's practically a ghost town; the staff is nonexistent, the bar is closed, and while the room was clean, it was old, with furniture that looks like it's decades old! The facilities are borderline dangerous (the entrance to the cave is filthy after a fire; it's burned and hasn't been cleaned, and the ceiling is open with exposed cables). The pool is littered with burnt material and sand, and the old tiles are coming loose. Breakfast is adequate but incomparable; the unqualified staff do what they can.

The hotel is in serious need of renovation. There were only fifteen people staying and so was rather ghost like. We were given rooms on the top floor which were small, with tiny windows looking out on the roof with no view which was a shame as other floors were obviously available. The bathroom has chipped tiles and cracked basin. The breakfast is a good spread but everything has been sitting for ages so cooked things are dried out. The bar is permanently closed and there is no sitting area, and the pools although hot, the jets are no longer working. It is a shame as it has so much potential.

The hotel is showing its age and desperately needs a renovation. The room still had carpeting and no balcony. On the plus side, it has rooms with twin beds that can be separated. The room size is good. The hotel also has its own spa area with a small steam room and sauna, as well as indoor and outdoor pools. An underground passage leads to the thermal baths, which is great because you can simply walk over in your bathrobe. The breakfast buffet is standard. Why a Swiss hotel offers mozzarella for breakfast instead of a fine mountain cheese is beyond me. The coffee comes from a fully automatic machine, so it's not for coffee lovers. But otherwise, it has everything you need. There's a nice lobby/bar area with a fireplace, perfect for starting or ending the evening. The bar opens at 4 pm.

This is our second time here :) So lovely. With an outdoor and indoor thermal bath, sauna, and steam room – what more could we ask for? :) The room is clean, the breakfast is very generous with a wide selection. The staff is helpful and friendly. Despite its age, the hotel is in good condition. We are very satisfied.

The Grand Bain hotel room was old-fashioned and poorly maintained, but clean. The toilet water ran constantly. The sauna and Turkish baths were permanently closed. The hotel pool had broken jets and dirty, cracked tiles. The bar was closed. Under the welcome sign at the entrance were long-withered flowerpots. There were very few staff members, but they were friendly. Breakfast was okay. In the Alpentherme spa center, foreign guests bathed in street clothes. The shopping arcade was almost completely dark, as only one shop remained open.

It's old, it's dark, and the TV doesn't work. The baths are warm and pleasant, but the pool tiles are disgusting and the edges are coming loose. It's almost dangerous. There's a serious lack of maintenance. The only positive point is that the breakfast is excellent.

This mountain spa use to be one of the best places to relax in Europe. Since it changed management about five or six years ago it has deteriorated significantly. It now allows kids under 16 years old and often infants. The kids piss in the pool, dive off the structures and cause what used to be relaxing experience, too be a dangerous experience. The cleaning if the pool has deteriorated. The staff seems untrained...meaning you can wait a quarter of an hour for the reception to deal with one

By the way, I didn't go there. The reservation service is so terrible that I finally gave up going there. This is the first time in my life that I've encountered such terrible people when it comes to making a reservation. Impossible to wait for someone by phone. The email staff is incompetent and cannot even read what is written to them. When finally (after 4 emails) we receive a proposal email and we validate it 60 minutes later, we receive another email 4 hours later to tell us that the suites are no longer available..... Lamentable. I will never go to this place.
