Worst Hotel Experience of My Life - Avoid at All Costs

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. The Grand Hotel du Calvados - Opera is not just bad, it’s a waking nightmare disguised as accommodation. We walked out after 5 minutes and im surprised it took that long.

From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by creepy staff who seemed more like lurking shadows than employees. Their unsettling stares and bizarre behavior made me feel unsafe, as if I had wandered into a horror movie instead of a hotel lobby.

The rooms? Filthy beyond belief. The carpets reeked of stale rot, the walls were stained with mould, and the air carried a suffocating stench that clung to my clothes long after I left. The bedding looked like it hadn’t been washed in years, and I wouldn’t be surprised if something was crawling in it.

Bathrooms were a disgrace: cracked tiles, foul odors, and grime so thick you could scrape it off with a knife. Even the so‑called “common areas” were depressing, with broken furniture and a smell that made me gag.

Every single detail screamed neglect and decay. The atmosphere was so unbearable that I couldn’t sleep, constantly worried about what might be lurking in the shadows or crawling under the bed.

This hotel doesn’t just ruin your trip it ruins your mood, your clothes, and possibly your health. Staying here felt like punishment.

Verdict: The Grand Hotel du Calvados – Opera is a disgrace to hospitality. Dirty, smelly, mouldy, creepy, and utterly revolting. Do yourself a favor: stay literally anywhere else. Sleeping on a park bench would be cleaner, safer, and more comfortable.

The room was a bit old and small, but the price was good and the location was excellent.

Update from our second stay:

When we returned for another night, we were finally placed in the correct building with an elevator. However, even this time, the room situation was handled poorly.

We had booked a **Double Room**, but were initially given a **Twin Room** instead.
When we questioned this, the staff claimed that the hotel was "fully booked" again and implied that nothing could be done.

We had to strongly insist and refuse the incorrect room.
Only then did they finally provide us with the **Double Room we originally paid for**.

This shows a repeated pattern:
if guests do not complain and do not firmly stand their ground, they are likely to be given a room that does not match their reservation.

Very frustrating experience.
Guests should be extremely careful and double-check everything.

I really enjoyed my stay. Yes, the rooms are relatively small as other reviewers have said but given that this is Paris with its old buildings, that is quite normal and to be expected. The rooms are clean and match the hotel’s 3-star rating. The receptionists and breakfast staff were very friendly and happy to help. The breakfast is French-style (coffee, tea, croissants etc). The location is absolutely spectacular - right next to St Lazar, which gets you anywhere you need to be quickly via Metro/RER/bus. The shopping district around Blvd Haussman is just a quick walk away, too, along with different restaurants. Would happily stay again.

The room was very clean, the staff super friendly and the location was quite good! The hotel itself was a bit on the old side but I didn’t really mind. I would really recommend this hotel if you want to stay in a very central area and don’t mind having a smallish room.
