Freiburg's inhabitants are 1000 farmers and their disinherited descendants plus 100000 exchange students who stay there for six months. Smell of party&weed is all around. Food&Housing are terribly expensive, the quality of food&service is terribly low (students serving). Not made for pedestrians: From the outskirts to the center: cars everywhere; in the center: bicycles everywhere. Look around before you move.
We spent an entire cold&rainy weekend at Freiburg and near to never left the hotel. Nice, relaxing days. The room was large. the pleasant Spa opened at 3 p.m. The lounge offered a lot of space and a small kid's corner. The restaurant is rather good and waiters and waitresses are very friendly professionals. Breakfast good (as usual in Germany nowadays, the breakfast assistants had no clue ("We don't have camomille."), but there is a very active and competent smiling lady behind, just wait or ask for her). Some of the friendly receptionists seemed to be overwhelmed by their tasks, but with a little patience ..

The hotel was perfectly located between the high speed train station and the old city. The rooms and the breakfast met the **** expectations.
What irritated me was the broken payments terminal: the card numbers had to introduced by hand. Hence my debet card was refused and I had to solve it for Accor with my credit card.

We stayed here 3 days on a weekend. We wanted a hotel that was a 15min walk to the city center & avoid having to drive or take public transport to eat & shop in the center.

It’s a vintage vibe. It must have been the most cutting edge & modern hotel in the 80s. The orange wood could use an update, like a lighter whitewash. The carpets have also seen a lot.

The good thing is that t’s cleaner than newer hotels & only around €100/night for 2 adults and 1 child. The location is amazing & there is taxi rank in front of the hotel for convenience.

We have a nice view from the room & it’s quite spacious with a lot of storage and hangers - very important!

They have square pillows but they aren’t flat so I liked those, but the rectangular pillows - some are nice and smooth and some are lumpy. The lumpy ones should be improved. It was easy asking for extra pillows when we arrived after dinner.

More points for improvement are:

- SOUND PROOFING at about 11pm the person(s) in the room above us was stomping around loudly that even with earplugs I could still hear them. At 12:20 I called the reception to complain. The lady spoke a little English and misunderstood, thinking I wanted a room change int he middle of the night. I had to call back & the man in reception said: You’re the one asking for a room change? I said no. He said they can’t do anything about the noise from the outside. I said no, the noise is not from the outside, but from the room above. Isn’t there a rule about “quiet hours” in Germany? The man understood and said we will take care of it. Finally at about 12:40 they stopped stomping around.

- CLEANING OF GLASSES & CUPS I don’t know if they wash the used glasses in the room or replaced with new ones from a dishwasher but when we got back to our room the glasses are supposedly clean were inverted on the counter/desktop, but not placed on the coasters so it’s not sanitary. Housekeeping should be consistent on how mugs/glasses are placed daily. I smelled them & they smell like the toilet hand soap. I find the thought of the housekeeping cleaning the room & bathrooms then using the same gloves to wash the glasses/mugs unsanitary, so we just washed them with our natural soap to be sure.

- INCONSISTENT REFILLING some items like nespresso pods were refilled but the cream wasn’t refilled. The vanity kit wasn’t refilled. Normally in hotels the complimentary toiletries are consistently refilled & arranged on the counter by housekeeping daily.

We did not have breakfast at the hotel or get to use their pool so I can’t give a review for those aspects of the hotel. I hope my review helps improve the standards of the hotel.

Excellent choice for families! Novotel Freiburg is comfortable, clean, and very family-friendly. The rooms are spacious, the breakfast is rich, and the location is perfect for exploring the city on foot. The staff was always kind and helpful, making us feel truly welcome. We would definitely stay here again with our family.

We had a great stay in this hotel – two adults and our teenage daughter in a superior room, which was big enough to fit us all comfortably. I understand the comments about the décor being a bit out of date, but the room was clean, comfy, and spacious, as well as quiet. The advantage of being in an older room is the simplicity – lots of storage space, a mini fridge that actually works and keeps things cold, and light switches i.e. no touchscreen to work everything (showing my age here). Nice breakfast, pool and sauna were a pleasant bonus, and the hotel is located close to the train station and walking distance to lots of attractions.
We had a power cut on the day that we left (I don’t think this was the hotel’s fault as the weather was terrible and also caused delays to our trains), so a slightly weird ending to the stay, but we were very happy overall and would return.

Had a room for three people. The sofa bed was uncomfortable, felt a bit more narrow than a typical twin bed.

Location very convenient right across train station.

Had to wait for room to get ready around 2pm check in.

There could be more outlets in the room. The two on the desk isn’t enough, already used up by lamp and water boiler, no place to plug in more things. Weirdly the toilet has 2 outlets, why?

WiFi was fast and steady, very good and reliable.

Room felt dated and needed modernizing. No Usb ports only power and phone (?) sockets. Carpet felt thin and bathroom had no usable plug to fill basin. Shower good and usable. TV looked 5 yrs out of date. Avoid Booking.com because even though we clicked breakfast we never got it after the first night.Dinning hall spacious but staff not overly friendly. Hotel location very good for train station and city centre even though there are homeless people living rough nearby.
