Location
Ion Adventure Hotel is situated in Grimsnes- og Grafningshreppur, Nesjavallaleið, approximately 35 km from Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV). It lies near the Golden Circle attractions and close to a geothermal park where steam rises visibly from the ground. The location offers quiet surroundings ideal for viewing the Northern Lights, though it is about a 45-50 minute drive from Reykjavik city. Nearby points of interest include Hvammsvik Hot Springs and the Frioheimmer greenhouse farm, both reachable within a short drive. The hotel is accessible via route 435, which can be challenging due to wind and seasonal closures from October to May. Horse riders and dirt bikers also use this road, so caution is advised when driving.
Tips
- Be prepared for the sulfur smell from the geothermal water, which is normal in Iceland and present in this hotel’s pool and water supply.
- If you plan to dine at the hotel, note that the restaurant menu is limited and prices are high, so consider bringing snacks or planning trips to nearby towns.

Reviews
Restaurant has a very limited menu, service was not great, offering of food was ok but not spectacular the northern light bar has no service there was no music, it was awkward to sit over there.
Overall we thought it was for Iceland high in price and not making worth the total experience, when the service and offering and the prices a bit lower ( we know Iceland is very expenisive ) it would have been a better experience.
For the overall experience yes we will stay again but not for the software of the hotel.
When we checked in they said that the hotel was quiet, so quite in fact that they weren’t staffing some of the bars. It was surprising then that as Marriott Ambassador status our room was not upgraded to any of the available suites and also the room we were given was between two other occupied rooms. As the hotel was so quiet it makes no sense to keep clumping guests together. It was also my partners birthday which the hotel was made aware of and nothing was done for it. It seems a lot to expect some sort of recognition, but when we had just come from the Courtyard hotel by the airport where he was greeted with a selection of chocolates and champagne you would have expected better recognition from a Design Brand luxury hotel.
Overall then the hotel is fine, but it’s very expensive for what it is and if you’re hoping for some sort of recognition of Marriott status you’re better off going elsewhere. Would not return.
fitting to the hotel’s affiliation with Design Hotels, rooms were aesthetically calming and pleasing to the eye. i booked the smallest room but got an upgrade to a suite thanks to my Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status, which is honored at this hotel. including late checkout at 2pm.
service is top notch around the hotel from restaurant to front desk. everyone endeavours to inform guests at the first sighting of the northern lights.
hotel’s located less than an hour’s drive to Hvammsvik Hot Springs, and the Frioheimmer greenhouse farm respectively. i highly recommend day trips to these two locations :)
cant wait to return to ION Adventure hotel with friends in tow!
except the kids food at the restaurant.
