It offers a unique experience with room types ranging from Sub-Parterre Single rooms to luxurious Lava Double Suites. Guests can enjoy a variety of amenities including a geothermal heated outdoor pool, sauna, spa and wellness centre, fitness centre, and a games room. The hotel’s restaurant serves a buffet and à la carte options with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. The Northern Lights Bar features floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views, although some guests noted it closes early. Rooms are noted for their spaciousness and calming design, but some reviews mention smaller bathrooms and maintenance issues. The hotel respects Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status with possible room upgrades and late checkouts. Free parking, WiFi, and concierge service are also available. Expect a strong sulfur smell from the geothermal water, a common feature throughout Iceland. Overall, Ion Adventure Hotel combines architectural interest and natural surroundings with moderate service and pricing for Iceland.

Location

Ion Adventure Hotel is situated in Grimsnes- og Grafningshreppur, Nesjavallaleið, approximately 35 km from Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV). It lies near the Golden Circle attractions and close to a geothermal park where steam rises visibly from the ground. The location offers quiet surroundings ideal for viewing the Northern Lights, though it is about a 45-50 minute drive from Reykjavik city. Nearby points of interest include Hvammsvik Hot Springs and the Frioheimmer greenhouse farm, both reachable within a short drive. The hotel is accessible via route 435, which can be challenging due to wind and seasonal closures from October to May. Horse riders and dirt bikers also use this road, so caution is advised when driving.

Tips

  • Be prepared for the sulfur smell from the geothermal water, which is normal in Iceland and present in this hotel’s pool and water supply.
  • If you plan to dine at the hotel, note that the restaurant menu is limited and prices are high, so consider bringing snacks or planning trips to nearby towns.
  • Drive carefully on route 435, especially in windy or winter conditions, and watch out for horse riders and dirt bikers sharing the road.

It is certainly an adventure to drive to this hotel, the hotel itself is stunning, rooms are spacious and great views. The heated pool and sauna were absolute great after a drive to relax.

Restaurant has a very limited menu, service was not great, offering of food was ok but not spectacular the northern light bar has no service there was no music, it was awkward to sit over there.

Overall we thought it was for Iceland high in price and not making worth the total experience, when the service and offering and the prices a bit lower ( we know Iceland is very expenisive ) it would have been a better experience.

For the overall experience yes we will stay again but not for the software of the hotel.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Ion. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the lava spa was very relaxing. We had a great dinner at the restaurant and really enjoyed the breakfast buffet. The staff was very kind and gave us some great local recommendations for the next stage of our trip. We were even lucky enough to see the northern lights, thanks to the wake up call from the front desk.

It’s difficult really to comment on this Hótel but overall we had quite a disappointing stay. We picked the hotel for its remote location for better access to the northern lights, so the fact it’s remote was a plus for us but others may find it a negative. As it’s about 45/50 minutes drive from Reykjavík you are pretty much stuck here for food options unless you don’t mind driving back and forth. The food prices here are expensive so you’ll be stuck with that.
When we checked in they said that the hotel was quiet, so quite in fact that they weren’t staffing some of the bars. It was surprising then that as Marriott Ambassador status our room was not upgraded to any of the available suites and also the room we were given was between two other occupied rooms. As the hotel was so quiet it makes no sense to keep clumping guests together. It was also my partners birthday which the hotel was made aware of and nothing was done for it. It seems a lot to expect some sort of recognition, but when we had just come from the Courtyard hotel by the airport where he was greeted with a selection of chocolates and champagne you would have expected better recognition from a Design Brand luxury hotel.
Overall then the hotel is fine, but it’s very expensive for what it is and if you’re hoping for some sort of recognition of Marriott status you’re better off going elsewhere. Would not return.

stayed 3 nights here and the auroras were dancing every night for hours! best way to watch them is from the hotel’s geothermal heated pool.

fitting to the hotel’s affiliation with Design Hotels, rooms were aesthetically calming and pleasing to the eye. i booked the smallest room but got an upgrade to a suite thanks to my Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status, which is honored at this hotel. including late checkout at 2pm.

service is top notch around the hotel from restaurant to front desk. everyone endeavours to inform guests at the first sighting of the northern lights.

hotel’s located less than an hour’s drive to Hvammsvik Hot Springs, and the Frioheimmer greenhouse farm respectively. i highly recommend day trips to these two locations :)

cant wait to return to ION Adventure hotel with friends in tow!

Don’t believe the “bad reviews”……this hotel is absolutely amazing. The ambiance of the restaurant was A+ as well as the food. People complain it’s expensive but good. Yeah you are staying at a $600 a night hotel did you expect the meal to be $25? Hotel staff was friendly and Informative. The hotel bar had fantastic views and was very comfortable. The natural red hot spring pool was super relaxing and private. The rooms were spotless and bathrooms very nice. The hotel is basically brand new and has a very modern feel to it. We even got a personal fireworks show n New Year’s Eve. Totally worth the money and pleasure we had while staying. It might smell like sulfur from time to time but that’s we cause it literally sits on a natural hydrothermal area. If you don’t like comfort or having fun then you shouldn’t stay here otherwise this spot is great!

If you're sensitive to smells, definitely don't stay here. The sulfur smell is overwhelming; it woke me up twice in the middle of the night. The water also has a strong sulfur smell. Writing this review reminds me of that stench, and it makes me shudder.

The hotel is conveniently located near the Golden Circle attractions and a park. Nearby, you can witness geothermal steam rising from the ground.

Great hotel, everything was wonderful
except the kids food at the restaurant.

The design is very good. I stayed there for two nights just because of its reputation. The bar is nice, the rooms are average, and the restaurant is expensive. It's just for a taste, not a hotel where you can live comfortably
