Superior outside shell — economy inside.
We arrived at the Geysir Hotel and first impressions were excellent. From the outside the property looks stunning, and the lobby and public areas are beautifully designed and feel very high-end.
We were kindly upgraded to a Deluxe Room, which offered a very generous size. However, this is where the experience became mixed.
The bathroom is large but surprisingly underutilized. The room category advertises a bathtub, but there is no separate shower — which feels outdated for a hotel in this price segment, especially given the ample space that could easily accommodate both. Amenities are extremely minimal: just a basic soap dispenser at the sink. No body lotion, no hand cream, no additional bathroom amenities. In Iceland’s dry climate, this felt like a noticeable miss compared to every other hotel we stayed at during our trip. Also no slippers, no bathrobes and no mini fridge for personal use!
Another big downside is the lack of facilities. For a hotel with around 77 rooms, there is no spa, no gym, and no sauna — which was quite surprising in Iceland, where even very small properties often offer at least a sauna. After the Geysir site closes around 18:00 and dinner is finished, there is unfortunately very little to do at the hotel.
On the positive side, dinner in the restaurant was very good, and breakfast was solid. Price–value for the room itself was acceptable. The bed, however, was extremely soft (with an additional topper), which caused back discomfort for us — something to keep in mind if you prefer a firmer mattress.
Overall: beautiful design and great restaurant, but the in-room amenities and missing wellness facilities make the experience feel more mid-range than luxury. Consider bringing your own body lotion and note that slippers and bathrobes are not provided.
Staying at Hotel Geysir was an unforgettable immersion into the raw beauty of Iceland. Located directly across from the iconic Strokkur geyser, the hotel itself is a masterpiece of modern Icelandic design, blending warm wood textures with expansive glass that invites the landscape inside.
The receptionist is very polite and notice me to watch the northern lights. That’s a very important remind for me in the journey.
