The Shirahone Onsen is located 1h by car from the Matsumoto station (19,000 yen by taxi), in the mountains, far from everything. You come here for one thing only: relax at the Onsen.
The common areas of the hotel are not fancy and would benefit from a refreshing, but the Japanese style room is very spacious and we had a soothing view on the stream. The Onsen facilities are great and the experience of the outdoor hot bath while it's snowing is unique. If you are lucky, you might even spot a snow monkey.
On the downside, the kaiseki dinner was nice, but they don't open during the day, and so you are left with dried noodles ! So it is recommended to buy some food in Matsumoto before going there.

Spectacular view, great hospitality & friendly staff, we booked room with halfboard which was nice (dinner is 10/10 but breakfast is pretty simple), despite being the smallest size of unit mix but 10tatami room is big enough for 4ppl with bags, the building is single corridor design thus all guest rooms have moutain view. Onsen is superb! W/M seperate onsen, both provided indoor & outdoor baht and open 0300pm-0900am (please be noted that Hot spring tax will be additionally charged when check out). We drove all the way from route158, road condition is fine just need to be careful in some parts since it's 1-way. Free drink at the lobby and free beer 0300-0500pm. Highly recommended.

Disappointing Stay – Poor Value for the Price
We stayed at this ryokan recently and were left quite disappointed.
Check-in was supposed to be from 3:00 pm. We arrived at 3:10 pm and found the reception counter completely unattended. No one was there to receive us, and we had to wait almost 15 minutes before anyone appeared. There was no apology, no explanation—just an indifferent welcome.
The meals were another letdown. Dinner and breakfast were both very basic and low in quality, far below expectations given the room rate. In fact, the breakfast felt like something out of a budget business hotel. For the price we paid, we expected much better.
The ryokan itself is dated and shows clear signs of wear and poor maintenance. It lacks the charm and warmth typically associated with traditional Japanese inns.
Overall, this was not worth the price. There are definitely better options in the area. We will not be returning.

In the deep mountains and forests, the road is a bit difficult to walk after the snow, but everything else is ok!

It couldn't be better. The store picked up and dropped off the car, more than 2200, three people, one night and two parking, banquet dinner standard.

The room is very big and nice, with a big window, the view is really good, and the food is especially delicious! Breakfast and dinner are very good, and there is a shuttle bus at the bus station, which is really good.

Very good, there is free beer from 15:00 to 17:00, the room is hygienic, the outdoor bath is comfortable, and the dinner is rich and delicious

It was just under an hour by rental car from Matsumoto City. It was still autumn leaves season and warm, perfect for a drive. 100% natural hot spring water is great, and it's open until 9am so you can go in even at night. The food was also great, the staff, Japanese and foreign, were all smiling and it was a pleasant meal. There were many foreign guests staying, but they don't usually bathe in hot springs naked, so I wondered if they were able to enjoy the hot springs. Breakfast was also delicious, and even though the rice was from the hotel's big rice cooker, it was so good that I ate two bowls. They bring spring water from the restaurant and it was so delicious that I drank several bowls.

The hot spring is good, but it is old and expensive. The food is so-so. You need to be brave to live in the wilderness. There is no one on duty except the guests.

The staff was kind and helpful. The location of the Ryokan is magnificent , up in the mountain . We really loved it. The onsen was fantastic. Everything was neat. The dinner was amazing too.
