Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen Umi to Akari / Hewitt Resort in Hakodate

We’ve booked a family room and was assigned one that has a scenic view of the sea and also the botanical garden.

Check in was fast with clear instructions on the restaurant and private onsen provided.

The quality of the dinner and breakfast were one of the better ones I’ve seen in my years of travelling in Japan. What I didn’t like was that they assigned Japanese on one side of the restaurant while tourists on the other side. While I would have preferred a quiet and peaceful dinner, it wasn’t possible as the hotel took in large tour groups and they were extremely loud. So perhaps the noise would have been more manageable if tourists were spread out across the whole restaurant instead of collating all at one side. On this note, I’m surprised that a hotel of this quality and price range has allowed itself to take in tour group business.

The water in the private onsen has an extremely strong chlorine smell and as my booking was the last session of the day, I can’t helped thinking whether it was a case of them adding chlorine to the onsen water after each round of private onsen. In short the accumulative chlorine adding caused this strong smell.

Nonetheless it’s still a nice stay and I would rate it a 5 stars rating.

It was a great stay at the hotel even though it is not very near to the main tourist area. Overall very pleasant experience with all the facilities provided and small gifts in the suite room. Will definitely go back again for next visit to Hakodate..

My husband and I have stayed at this hotel many times, and what truly makes our stay special every single time is the incredible hospitality of the Restaurant Manager, Mr. Soto.
He is the only one who consistently remembers us and treats us with such genuine respect and kindness. He makes us feel like family. We are leaving for the USA next week, but we will definitely be back soon because of him.

One of the best hotel we ever stayed in Japan. Buffet dinner was superb..scallop and unlimited snow crab provided by hotel. Onsen is top especially the outdoor pool which overlooking the sea. Must stay if anyone plan to go Hakodate

The price was really good, the service was excellent, and the breakfast buffet was plentiful. The hot springs on the top floor were also very relaxing.

The hotel was excellent and very affordable. Both dinner and breakfast were quite good. The open-air hot spring on the rooftop offered stunning sea views, and with snowflakes falling on my face while I was soaking, it truly felt like an authentic Hokkaido experience.

The location is excellent, very close to both the airport and the beach. Directly opposite is the Tropical Botanical Garden, and from the room, you can even spot monkeys in the garden. The hot spring views are absolutely fantastic, and soaking in them on a snowy day was an incredible experience!!!!!!

Breakfast was definitely worth it. The room was a bit small; as a solo traveler, I could barely open my suitcase. The rooftop hot spring was great with a good view.

Location of the hotel is relatively far from city centre, but close to the hotel.
Hot springs in the hotel are also great, but the private ones are booked completely, so a reservation in advanced is recommend!

If I can choose to rate the onsen, I’ll give 5 stars! I enjoy the onsen- one indoor and one outdoor while you could enjoy the hot onsen, looking at the night sky, moon, with snows blown gently to your face or skin. A lovely night to enjoy…
