Good: The staff at Haiyokan were very accommodating. Although I used public transportation, the bus stop was conveniently close. There are also two convenience stores nearby. I loved the facial cleanser provided in the hot spring area so much that I bought some.

Bad: The buffet for both breakfast and dinner was at a different hotel across the street, which was inconvenient as we had to go outside. The staff there weren't as good. It was cold during Golden Week even in the mornings and evenings, so it would be tough in winter. When the buffet was crowded, we had to take a number and wait to be seated, suggesting there might not be enough seating for the size of the place. Also, they often couldn't keep up with demand; many dishes and even cutlery were unavailable when we went to get food. The room cleaning wasn't thorough; there were hairs in the bathroom and dust in several spots.

Although a bit dated, the hotel is well-maintained. It's very quiet with few tourists, and the rooftop hot spring is a nice bonus. Both breakfast and dinner are served at the new building across the street, which was a great experience. It's also very close to the zoo and botanical garden, and getting to JR station by taxi is super convenient.

This was the last lodging on my Hokkaido trip.

I chose a 10-tatami room. It was very spacious and clean, and even with two futons laid out, there was still plenty of room around, making it easy to pack and relax.

The hot spring on the top floor was also spacious, with hot, normal, and lukewarm water options available in the inner bath, and just one normal-temperature bath in the open-air bath.

The location is great, with walls made of glass, but the Kaiyotei building isn't particularly tall, so I was a little concerned about people looking in from outside.

Also, amenities were provided in the lobby, so you had to pick up what you needed. Only a razor, hairbrush, hair tie, and toothbrush were available in the room.

Dinner was an additional charge. I checked in so late that I'd missed the deadline for dinner, but they accommodated me so I could have dinner, which was very helpful. And dinner was absolutely delicious!

The nearest station is Yunokawa Onsen Station, about a 10-minute walk away.

There's a foot bath near Yunokawa Onsen Station, which was quite hot, but very relaxing.

The shuttle bus to Hakodate Airport passes right next to Kaiyotei. It costs 300 yen in advance and transportation IC cards cannot be used. Payment can be made by cash or credit card.

I really enjoyed this hot spring hotel. On Mondays, it was so crowded that the entire place was practically reserved. It's said that the former shogunate soldier, Hijikata, bathed there. The water is a saline spring. The dinner was rich and delicious, especially the stew. It was perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal while looking out at the sea.

h is very quiet and clean. This time I stayed in a tatami room. The view outside is also good. You can see the sea. There is a hot spring on one side, which should have some therapeutic effect. From inside, you can see the scenery of the surrounding city, so it is not so isolated.

It has a nice onsen, loved it. Entrance is big and it has own big parking area front of the hotel which was very comfortable.

Stayed there as part of a flight package. The staff were very sincere and welcoming. The viking dinner was spectacular. The main attraction is definitely the local produced seafood section which seems to be the most popular. The onsen on the upper most floor has a breathless view of Hakodate. There is also an outdoor bath which is best experienced during the winter. The cold breeze and snow blowing against your upper body whilst the rest is submerged in the hot bath is something everyone should try. I highly recommend this place and would come again.

Polite staff who personally show you the room when we checked in. Breakfast and dinner were both great too. Not a fan of Crab (kani) but they have that as an all you can eat item. Love the squid and seaweed miso soup though. Also great view from the room and also fantastic onsen. However, I gave a 4 star as there was a used face mask in one of the yukata. Not good in this heightened outbreak period. Hope the cleaning folks are more careful next time

This is my favorite onsen resort in Hakodate.

The rooms are simple but comfortable. The dinner and breakfast buffets are excellent, with fresh food that changes daily. The seafood is the star of the show (not surprising for squid city), but the rest of the food is very good too.

There is a convenience store with lots of local sweets available.

The rooftop onsen is wonderful, especially the open air area which offers spectacular ocean views.

I had booked this hotel mainly due to the fact that their fine print didn't mention a ban from the onsen for clients with visible tattoos. After the reservation the staff informed me they apply such a ban although they don't even bother to inform the guests on their Web page. They asked me to "understand the rules" as if it was my fault that they forgot to publish their house rules on their site.
How am I supposed to "understand" something that I cannot even be aware of?
