This Ryokan was amazing. As others have said it is older, but very relaxing. You can take a shuttle there from Himeji station. It is very isolated with a nice garden and onsens on site. The staff and the food was excellent. Highly recommended!

Excellent ryokan, kaiseke dinner was delicious, good service. I really liked the onsen outside. There is a transfer from the train station, but you need to write or call the hotel in advance.

This was my first time using this inn. As we were travelling by car, the deciding factors for us to stay there were that it was located right near the interchange (Yumesaki Smart Interchange) and that it had a hot spring. The room felt a little old, but clean. The hot spring was wonderful and we were able to enjoy both the open-air and indoor baths. The food was also delicious. The inn itself felt like it was alone in the mountains, and there were no houses nearby, so we were able to spend our time quietly. There were some foreign guests staying there that day, and they were staying there after visiting Himeji Castle. I think that for people travelling by car, the location is far better than staying at a business hotel.

I enjoy staying at hot spring inns twice a month. This time, I was in Nishinomiya City for personal business, so I stayed at Kamiyama Ryokan, which was a good distance away and reasonably priced. I saw it on a travel site and it had a very high rating, so I was interested and made a reservation, but it was a small inn, so I didn't have high expectations. I was curious about the nearby abandoned inn, but the staff greeted me from the bridge over the pond at the entrance, and the inn and rooms were renovated and cleaned well, so I had a pleasant stay. The large bath was small, so I washed my body and headed to the open-air bath. The open-air bath had a sense of openness and I was able to relax. After that, the family bath was available, so my husband and I went in, and it was also pleasant. The meals were very delicious both in the morning and evening. I was particularly surprised that my wife, who is picky about food, ate the morning porridge and said it was delicious. The staff's attitude was also good. I would like to visit again.

I'm pretty torn about this review.
The good:
The meal was extensive and of very high quality, including delivery of the multitude of courses to our room. Our waitstaff was a delight.
The complimentary shuttle to/from Himeji is a lifesaver, I can imagine it being a real mission to get there otherwise.
Everyone we dealt with was friendly, and went out of their way to help, despite knowing very little English.
The not so good:
It's clear that this establishment was once very beautiful, but unfortunately it is now aged and in quite poor condition. All fixtures are dated, and the bathing areas are very mildewy.
All the wood around our private bath was very moldy and smelled strongly while using the bath (which I believe we were charged extra to use). The wooden bridge to the outdoor baths felt soft/unstable in places. The slippers you have to wear everywhere (no shoes allowed) are very old, extremely uncomfortable, and only come in two sizes. I tripped going down stairs multiple times.
All of this might have been forgivable if we hadn't spent such an eye watering sum for one night in this room.

If you want a place that can truly heal your body, mind and soul, this is well worth the trek to get out to. Super friendly staff, amazing amenities, great food and tranquil bath experience in rural Japan. It may be semi tough to get to and a bit pricey but well worth it. Compliments to our hosts for making it a very memorable Japanese experience!

Wonderful little find. We were planning to visit Himeji castle and struggled to find a nice hotel in town; I’m so glad I expanded my search to find this little gem. Only a short taxi ride into the country outside Himeji, in an extremely quiet and peaceful location. Beautiful gardens and the full ryokan experience with lovely, accommodating staff. The outdoor onsens in particular are a delight. 5 star experience at a very affordable price point. Definitely recommend it.

A little older feeling ryokan, but as its 300 years old for the location, time moves slowly here.
Very friendly staff members throughout the establishment and willing to share any local knowledge and tips for driving destinations.
It is also possible to purchase tickets for Himeji Central Park (zoo or amusement park) from the reception desk.
Rooms are large and comfortable, with delicious meals served consistently.
