Description

San Francisco Marriott Union Square is a 4-star hotel originally constructed in 1971 and renovated in 2009, offering a range of room types from standard Guest rooms to spacious Junior Suites with bay views. Guests can expect modern amenities such as air conditioning, soundproof rooms, and free Wi-Fi throughout the property. The hotel provides several services including a restaurant, bar, fitness centre, meeting facilities, and free parking. While the rooms are praised for cleanliness and comfort, some guests have noted the bathroom doors close loudly and noise insulation between rooms could be improved. The hotel accepts service animals but does not allow pets. A daily destination fee of $30 applies, which can be used as credit toward food and beverage, although some guests find this charge steep. Overall, the Marriott maintains a high standard of service with friendly front desk staff and a well-equipped lounge area.

Location

Located on Sutter Street in downtown San Francisco, the hotel is adjacent to Union Square, a major shopping and dining district. It is within walking distance of key landmarks such as Dragon Gate (268 m), the entrance to Chinatown, and Top of the Mark rooftop bar (310 m). Sun Yat-sen's statue is also nearby at 375 meters. For beach lovers, East Beach is 3.95 km away. The hotel is approximately 62 km from Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC). Public transport options including cable cars, bus, and subway stops are easily accessible, though the walk from Powell station involves an uphill segment.

Tips

  • If you plan to use public transportation, be prepared for an uphill walk from Powell BART station especially if you have heavy luggage.
  • Consider requesting a higher floor room to enjoy better views and potentially less street noise.
  • Use the $30 daily destination fee credit at the hotel’s restaurant or bar to offset this mandatory charge.

Great location, and the front desk was super nice and let me check in early.

Hotel is good and service attitude is also good. Hotel was fully booked, and my boys room was a bit far from mine.

Rooms are standard Marriott level of cleanliness and modern aesthetic, but the doors to the bathrooms are heavy doors that automatically close loudly. The noise isolation between rooms isn't great either.

We were woken up every 30-50 min from doors closing in adjacent rooms.

I usually stay at the Marriott Marquis, and I don't think I'll be staying at the Union Square location again.

Nice stay at a convenient location. Near to shopping and eateries.

It's a nice clean, secure hotel, located in San Fran. Short walk to the piers, ferry building, China Town, Union square Park and more. The restaurant serves quality food. The staff is always accommodating and the rooms are nice, the beds sleep well. The downside is the daily destination fee of $30. Seems to be obscene Marriott thing they tack on whether in town for business or pleasure. It can be used as a credit to the breakfast or bar area but is still a strong arm tactic to force you to dine there once a day. While the food is good the drinks at the bar are insanely priced. $17 for a rail vodka soda ? Seriously. It's business decisions like that make it no wonder it has protestors outside, who knows what they are pulling on the employees.

I'll start on the positive side: room is perfect - king size bed, clean, lots of space including a large working station.
the view is amazing, and the location is pretty nice as you can walk around to most attractions.
lobby receiptionists were really friendly and helpful, and I was really satisfied.
now the negative side: breakfast was completely disgusting. I didn't know one could mess up a simple thing as eggs..
it was just plain 4 hot platters buffet, with the scrambled eggs completely watery, store-bought drinks, and terrible coffee. I don't think I've ever ate such a terrible breakfast anywhere in the world. and the price was absurd - 30$ before taxes and tip!
other then that - there are protests outside the lobby who are shouting, screaming and drumming from early morning to late evening. fortunately I couldn't hear anything from the room or from the lobby, but when you step outside - your eardrums explode. in any sane country those people would have been asked to move to the other side of the street, but in America - it seems to be fine to hurt tourists eardrums. I would expect the hotel to put more effort to stop this harassment.

There are protests all around this hotel. It’s been going on for over a month and will continue. The owners choose not to inform patrons and leave the staff to deal with unhappy guests.
Noise is on another level. They have drums, mega phones and speakers with no sense of rhythm (gotta hand it to them, it’s obnoxiously effective). 7am-10pm without a break! Echos throughout the hotel.
They refunded me immediately because they know it’s absurd to ask someone to pay to stay there with that level of non stop noise. They had no interest in switching me to another Marriott property or to relocate me to another property in the area. Did not offer me ground transport either.
Do yourself a favor, book far away from a Marriott.
Staff chose to pretend they were sorry while yelling over drums from outside. You all know and should inform people when making reservations or just after.

I've been staying at this hotel for years and I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Rooms are great (I took off one star because the AC was unusually loud), location is terrific and the staff is wonderful. Front desk is welcoming and warm and Maria in the club lounge is the loveliest. She seems to recognize just about everyone who stops in and stops what she's doing to welcome them in.

The room was clean and tidy. It's conveniently located right next to Union Square, offering a quiet retreat despite being in a busy area. Getting around is easy with the subway, bus, and cable car stops all nearby. There are also plenty of attractions within walking or a short ride away.

Dinner was great. Came back the next day for Wednesday pork chop special and told by new manager that had to wait an hour for menu to be available. At 3.30pm At the same time she went ahead with her staff and seated a couple that came after us. When asked why they said oh sorry and too bad for you and everyone else that was waiting to spend money have to wait til 4.30. She said she was new and unable to handle the job.
Wow. Never will go to daily grill again. Spent 300 first night in town. I have never written a review but because it popped up on my phone this is the first and it had to be bad. Daily grill is scratched from my list.

Came in at 11:00 am, we sat at the bar thinking faster service. We were told the kitchen is switching from breakfast to lunch, had to wait 10 minutes before they could make food. 45 minutes later we received our lunch. There was a bartender switch after our order was placed, and it was a shame, the bartender that came in had no care for his customers, stress on his face with every request. A couple came in and waited 20 minutes to even get a greeting...poor service.

Best option for good food on Union Square. We have been there for 3 times last 2 days. Breakfast and dinner. Service is good and food is delicious.
