My room, number 2 was spacious. The price and location were good. Walls had a litylenpeeling paint. Separate toilets and shower were clean. The room was clean. TV didn't really work. I ordered a steak and chips which was delicious. Worth a try. Staff were very helpful and pretty friendly.

Very basic room with a shared bathroom above the Shakespeare hotel pub. Beds were comfy and the room was clean, the shared bathrooms need a renovation and deep clean. The location is the main draw card and the pub downstairs is quite nice.

As if you were transported back to UK, nice food and nice interior design showing a british pub style

Good venue however the sunday roast was really tough (beef roast). There was quite a bit of gristle ? maybe we got a poor cut but it was meant to be sirloin and cost $29. Vibe of the pub was good and has some heritage charm. Maybe we will skip the food next time and just go for a drink and live music.

An absolute gem in Surry Hills. Wonderfully cosy and comfortable with a good drink selection and food menu. A place I love to sit and spend an afternoon or evening, as at ease as if I was in my own living room. The upstairs area is especially pleasant.
I haven't rented accommodation here, but I'm sure it's lovely as a hotel too.

Had a great experience at The Shakespeare Hotel! The service was excellent and the atmosphere was really welcoming. I also want to mention the Security Officer, Vik, who stood out for his kindness and professionalism. He looks after everyone and makes sure all patrons and staff feel safe. I had a chance to chat with him — he was very respectful and friendly to everyone around.

Big thanks to Vik for his kind nature and the great work he does. Wishing him all the best in life!

The Shakespeare Hotel is not for everyone (what is?) but it perfectly fitted what I wanted. I was traveling alone and wanted to get to know old Sydney, and get in touch with Aussie life, and was planning this as an economy trip. The SH is a charming historical Victorian era building in an historic Victorian era part of Sydney (Surry Hills) that has gentrified and has a very active social scene. The SH is close to the Central Train Station from where any part of Sydney and environs can be reached quickly, easily and cheaply. The rooms at the SH are also budget priced. The rooms are above a very active Aussie pub and so are noisy in the evening. This was no problem for me, in the evening I was out seeing Sydney (the Opera House, watching fruit bats, etc.) and came back at night not long before closing to pick up a little something from the pub before bedtime. Be aware that since this is an historic 150 year old building you will be climbing narrow stairs to get to your room. And it you want to you can hang around the SH in the evening shooting the breeze with locals who frequent the place. You key gets you in a side door if the place is closed if you return late at night. I was very pleased with my choice. If I return to Sydney traveling under similar circumstances, I would definitely stay here again.

Fabulous accommodation, so close to all the action. We chose this location because of its proximity (and easy public transport) to the Hordern Pavilion (for TISM in case you're wondering) and it is so close and convenient. We walked home from the venue, super quick and we walked into the city several times. The noise from the bar ends around midnight, although it never really bothered us. And although the rooms are dated, they are just stunning - lots of dark carpet and old furniture, but new mattress and aircon that works a treat. Shared bathrooms but there are two so there was never an issue with waiting for a shower or loo. And how convenient having a bar and bistro downstairs. Stoked we found this place and would definitely stay again.

It's good value. The room was nice, shared bathrooms basic. It was Saturday night and the bar was loud, but the place was quiet once it closed.

The folks managing this property are great people. But the property itself is very old. The shared bathroom aren't kept clean by other fellow residents. Not all things work in the room itself.

Very bad sandwich artists, she told me if you want sandwich it's going with few salads. She told subways standard allows 4 tomato slices.... it seems they are not properly trained. Very rude even don't toasted patty in toaster using patty option , we know bcz we are regular customers of subway. But it's my first experience with this store who charges for extra salads.

Disappointed as the service and food is usually pretty good, not tonight!
The staff were rude and the food was average.
Must of been an off day for them

Whenever I want to show visiting friends good food in Sydney I pick El bulli. The staff are amazing, the food is so good (make sure you have the calamari) and the live music on the weekend awesome.

Hosted my birthday there and everyone had a terrific time. The tapas were delicious and plentyful for the group, and we had lots of fun dancing to the band. Great atmosphere planning and set up. Planning the group booking with El Bulli staff was easy.

It's not the best tapas in town it's true, but they have an extensive menu where everything tastes good, sangria is good, reasonably priced and nicely decked out creating a good ambience. Good for a group who want to just hang out and eat tapas as the Spanish do... slow and steady over the course of the evening washed down with good sangria in a hustle & bustle environment.

Really good food and atmosphere! The staff is always nice and smiley :) The Paella is amazing!!!! Love this place
